This is a common issue to all truck brands. It doesn't have to do anything with the engine. It's a separate system. Just wait for SCR filter to get clogged around 350k. Make sure you have ready 7 to 10k to replace it.

Eric Vig I do have Dd15 and it has 720 miles, drives just find, and has no leaks at all. I think the reason why is doing well is I don’t hour more then 35lb and I do my oil change every 10,000 miles, that’s is why.
@davidellis279
@davidellis279 4 года назад
Eric Vig. If you've never seen an engine that clean and with so little wear inside you obviously haven't worked on a Scania V8 with a million miles on it. They look like they have just been assembled at one million miles and are as clean inside as the day they were built. I admit this engine looks pretty good for the mileage but it's no better than I would expect from a Scania straight Six or V8 engine. They achieve a standard that very few manufactures can match and that's why their number one no matter what the terrain or load imposed on them.

I promise you, the 12.7's are the most economical, and reliable engines ever made. I would put the N-14 in a close 2nd place. It costs you more money to operate, and maintain that Cat, then it does for a 12.7 owner. As long as I kept my 12.7 at 65mph, I was rocking 7.0 mpg. Carlos Diesel Electric: What’s properly maintained besides regular oil changes ?
@CarlosDieselElectric
@CarlosDieselElectric 4 года назад
Josif Maracine 1) regular oil changes with quality oil and filters. 2) replace your oil suction module immediately if you notice oil pressure is fluctuating. 3) always have at least 1/4 tank of fuel or more to help ensure longevity of injectors and high pressure fuel pump. 4) perform valve adjustments at the correct intervals. This may sound like a lot but I have seen a few DD15’s with over 1,000,000 miles on the original engine and still going.
@dieselgaint
@dieselgaint 6 лет назад
I do have to say. I've been working on the DD series for 6 years at Freightliner. The engine would not be that clean for sure. Cam frames, oil/coolant modules, crankcase vapor separator, and air compressors are the most common leaks. That's the biggest thing I fix is oil leaks. Very few valve cover, front/rear main seals, and rear structure gaskets. I've seen plenty with holes clear through the block for no reason, some had reasons due to neglect. Over all the performance of a 495 hp DD13 to a 515 hp 14.0 S60 the DD13 will run circles around the S60. DD15 is tuned for fuel economy so it doesn't pull as aggressive as a 13 or 16, unless you get one with 561 hp then it will pound the ground! If your looking at getting a DD series engine here's some tips. Got service history if possible. A dealer should be able to get the claims history. Around 450-500k miles you'll see came frames leaking, engine sensor harnesses will fail due to wires chaffing inside the loom, and oil pickup tube orings causing low oil pressure at start up. Dpf's will usually last 450-600k depending on operating loads and such. SCR cat will last around 650k unless a previous failure burned them out or poisoned them. Early DD series (08-12) had injector cup orings problems, but most all of them would have failed and been repaired by now. The internal shots in the video are exactly what I've seen in the field. I pulled one down that had 850k miles and had a wrist pin retainer fail. All the bearing looked brand new. Liners and rings had wear but plenty of life left in it. These bearings are very sensitive to dirty and low oil pressure. They can scratch and be fine, but if something big enough gets in the material flakes off, or metal to metal contact, and then its by by rod or main bearing. These have spattered bearings, not multi-layer. I do like this engine. Its easy to service and maintain, but parts are $$$$ and parts availability is still a problem 10 years after introduction. It's still a machnical thing made by humans and maintained by humans, so you'll still have problems here and there. The things can't handle lack of care like the S60 did, but you can overheat them to 265*F and they'll be just fine; dang belt driven water pump. I'd like to hear from the Euro truck drivers about the equivalent om470, 471, and 473. Is there an om472? Any questions just ask.

Marnin Gehman we have a bunch of m2's with dd13's in them. oil and coolant leaks are so hard to keep up with in them. a handful of them get to 500-600k and liner seals on cylinder 3 or 4 start leaking coolant into the oil. 2016 dd13 with front seals and air compressor oil leaks and coolant lines leaking. it's amazing how much these things are in the shop.

I have 2013 cascadia DD15. 600k miles. I have buildup around the oil housing some of the bolts have something like acid from a battery. Best way I can describe it. It's white substance with some color from what I think is from the coolant which is red. Is that something I should be worried about? I also do have low oil pressure warnings that comes and goes when I start the engine. I push the accelerator and it stabilizes before it shuts off. I also have rough idling, which I hear could be fuel pump or quantity control valve. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I'm wanting to do some preventative maintenance.
@jddiesel7409
@jddiesel7409 5 лет назад
JZ Look around ahead of the oil filter module for a coolant leak blowing back. there is a blue coolant hose at the front of that for the egr cooler that leaks, or the line from coolant reservoir, or the crossover hose. supposedly the oil pickup orings were fixed in 2013 but I don't believe it with what we've been seeing. replace the oil pickup manifold, the four orings on the manifold to pump connection. we change oil pumps while we're at it too, but some places don't.

Three weeks ago i went out on a road service call when the driver said his DD15 went pop & shut down on I-15. Right before I got to him I stopped & picked up the connecting rod lying in the middle of the road. #2 rod went out the left side of the block, bounced on the road then knocked a hole in the power divider front cover before taking a line off a trailer brake can. It had 36k miles on it. Oh & I really love the location of the air compressor too, on the left rear behind the fuel system.

@@glenalguire6960 Low mile failures are more common than you think. Last week I went out to a 24 Mack Anthem in Cokeville Wyoming that had a low coolant shutdown. The plastic expansion tank was split open at the seam. The company had me drive to SLC for a new tank & go back out there & replace it. After poring 14 gallons of coolant into it I figured we had another problem & it was all in the oil pan. With a $3600 road service bill it needed a hook back to Mountain West in Utah. It had 42k on the clock.

In my opinion the DD-13, 15, 16 series Detroit engine are the worst engine Detroit has ever made. Constant problems with egr coolers, Dpf systems and the worst set up for a fuel system and most problematic I’ve ever dealt with or seen. Shit if you need to overhaul the engine and need to have the crank turned your shit out of luck because there are no undersized mains for these engines and plus all the timing gears and bull gears are on the back of the motor🤦‍♂️ where you have to drop the trans, clutch and flywheel and back motor mounts just to take the timing cover off. That’s enough of me ranting, you want a Detroit get your self a series 60.

***** I guess you mean a Series 60. Well wouldn't know what to do with it since I don't have a rig. But I drove them several years ago when i was in the Army. I drove a 977 HEMTT with a 8V92 in it.. But I just notice everything made nowadays (like cars) are not made to last. I own a 2000 Jeep Cherokee in good condition, and all of a sudden the past weekend, the ECM goes out on it, it is going to be about 1500 or more to replace it. Well why did it go out in the first place? I think it was designed an engineered to last a certain period of time and then fail, ensuring that I go pay the mechanic a visit. Of course I hate it because I liked and remember the days when shit was simple and I did all my own repairs. And of course they are doing the same thing with big trucks. I see all this polllution shit these new engines are required to gave, like the DD16, etc. All I can say is GOD DAMN THE 21ST CENTURY !!
@ThePackageLives

I disagree with the assessment that engines aren't built to last anymore. I work for a Detroit Diesel dealer and have noticed over the years that all of the mechanical work is drying up. During the 2-stoke days the engines just didn't last and needed periodic rebuilds. During the Series 60 days you would always have tons of rebuilds and bearing replacements, but they were lasting longer then the 2-strokes. Now with the DD engines, they almost last the life of the truck (mind you a lot of the trucks are throw-away trucks after so many miles now, like the Cascadia). A DD with a million miles without a rebuild is common, a S60 is rare, a 2-stroke extremely rare or even impossible.

Was such a problem Detroit remade them as rubber but kept the plastic coupler which is what always leaks anyway. It runs a lit smoother then the red brand our company switched to. The dd platform doesn't do well in harsh environment per the us military. They still use the 60 series

Let's ignore the tsb on loss of oil pressure as well due to orings in the oil pump piping, seen several with spun bearings as a result. As far as modern enginess go I'd rank dd15 behind d13 and isx15 in reliability.

Haha, yeah right, that is why Western Star over in Australia are almost giving away Detroit engines just to get people to buy trucks powered by them over the Cummins engine! Even Freightliner had to start giving a Cummins engine option recently because know one was interested in them with Detroit engines. Say what you want about how your the engine maker that pioneers and everyone else follows, but Cummins outclassed you with the ISXe5 engines in every way, I have never met a truck driver who doesn't like the new Cummins. The problem Detroit have is being part of the Daimler group, they get stuck with having to work with the new Daimler group Eurotrash designed engines.

How can this engine be clean? it has an EGR fitted, bet its not on the intake manifold, the emissions engineering regulations using the EGR technology seem good as far a pollutants go but not good for the engine, the manufacturers have to go to diesel particulate filters on the exhaust, I wouldn't buy this engine, the cleanliness inside the oil galleries is due to regular oil changes which is normal for any engine.

+David Vermillion nothing will ever outlast a 2 stroke DD. Of course the naysayers will always complain about oil leakage; but the simple fact of the matter is, an engine that leaks and burns a little oil will last 10x longer than one that does neither...
@theq4602
@theq4602 8 лет назад
Billy Severt I wonder why they couldn't get 2 strokes to burn less oil and run cleaner back then when they came out with the 4 strokes? Maybe nowadays they could use current tech to mitigate this problem? If they did that I bet many detroit fans would happily buy a new DD engine.

@wildbill6976
@wildbill6976 8 лет назад
the thing many don't understand when it comes to engines... you either get clean and efficient or reliability and durability....never both. DD's use a little oil and run a little dirtier because they're built to a bit looser tolerances. a little oil passby around the rings may be "dirty", but helps lubrication. Parts were also built much heavier than you'll find on modern diesels (stronger and more thermal resistance). The alternative is tighter tolerances, in which case the rings and cylinder walls take the abuse (cleaner, but wears quicker); and lighter parts (better power to weight but more prone to heat stresses and breakage). It's like comparing a steam engine to a modern gasoline engine... steam engine may be heavy, dirty, and inefficient, but if maintained, it'll pretty much last forever, and it can handle some abuse. gas engines; lightweight, clean, efficient; but only for a limited time, and well taken care of. cheaper lighter parts that wear out/fail in less than predicted life of engine. Abuse it, and it'll fly apart...
@theq4602
@theq4602 8 лет назад
Billy Severt Diesel engines are actually 15% more efficient than gasoline ones. Thats why many large trucks don't use gasoline. And its also why the small diesel engines in some cars get such good mileage. Instead of being built for torque, hp and longevity they are built for economy. Gasoline engines usually attain an efficiently of around 30-32%. Diesel engines have been known to (or in the case of a few particularly large engines) attain 55% efficiency.
