Just found this channel to digest complicated interactions of MTG in bite sized portions. Super great. Glad something like this exists.

Kind of like the classic of Collected Company into Eternal Witness and Grizzly Bear. Can Eternal Witness target the Collected Company with its ETB trigger? The answer is Yes, for the same reason. The trigger waits to go on the stack until after Collected Company has resolved.

Recent subscriber and really enjoying the breakdowns. Maybe an easy one but I've had conflicting answers and would love to see the specific rules that are involved in the interaction. I tap a Magus Lucea Kane to activate her ability. I then use the two colorless mana to activate the ability of Wizard's Rockets, how much mana (in any combo) do I create? I'm aware that mana abilities can't be copied, but Magus' oracle text does not specifically mention this as many other copy abilities do. Thank you!

I am pretty sure *Wizard's Rockets'* mana ability can and will be copied. The confusion seems to lie in the fact that mana abilities cannot be targeted because they are never put on the stack, but *Magus Lucea Kane* never targets it. Rather, the next spell/ability with {X} will be copied. A mana ability is an ability and *Wizard's Rockets* has {X} in its cost, and so *Magus Lucea Kane* will trigger. Will the ability be copied, even though it does not exist when her triggered ability resolves? It will. The game will use the last known information about *Wizard's Rockets'* ability when it comes to copy it. e.g. You activate *Wizard's Rockets* for {X}=2 with *Magus Lucea Kane's* mana ability, and in total you receive 4 mana of any combination of colors.

Hey, thanks for your insights. Could you explain the interaction between Goblin Bombardment/Yawgmoth, Thran Physician and Forsaken Miner? Can you sacrifice Forsaken Miner to Goblin Bombardment targeting your opponent and immediately use its ability? Thanks!
@Dot_Eleven
@Dot_Eleven Месяц назад
Pretty sure you should be able to. The reason being that the sacrifice is part of the cost for Goblin Bombardment so by the time you're targeting the opponent the Forsaken Miner will be in the graveyard which will then trigger the Forsaken Miner's ability.
@alexanderv.4347
@alexanderv.4347 Месяц назад
Forsaken Miner has an outright (presumably clarifying) ruling on the subject: "Forsaken Miner’s last ability triggers only if Forsaken Miner is in your graveyard at the moment you cast a spell, activate an ability, or put a triggered ability on the stack with one or more targets that constitute a crime. For example, if you cast a sorcery spell that destroyed two target creatures and your targets were a creature controlled by an opponent and Forsaken Miner, Forsaken Miner’s ability won’t trigger. However, if you cast a spell with an additional cost of “Sacrifice a creature” and you sacrifice Forsaken Miner to pay that cost, Forsaken Miner’s ability will trigger as long as you committed a crime with that spell.(2024-04-12)" The most relevant CR rule here is 603.10 which specifies that triggered abilities are checked immediately after an event (activating Goblin Bombardment in this case), at which point the Miner is already in the graveyard. @Dot_Eleven is however mistaken. Targeting happens at an earlier point in the Casting/Activation process than paying the total cost.
@M.V.-wn9wd
@M.V.-wn9wd Месяц назад
It would work, and Forsaken Miner actually has a ruling to that effect: "Forsaken Miner’s last ability triggers only if Forsaken Miner is in your graveyard at the moment you cast a spell, activate an ability, or put a triggered ability on the stack with one or more targets that constitute a crime. For example, if you cast a sorcery spell that destroyed two target creatures and your targets were a creature controlled by an opponent and Forsaken Miner, Forsaken Miner’s ability won’t trigger. However, if you cast a spell with an additional cost of “Sacrifice a creature” and you sacrifice Forsaken Miner to pay that cost, Forsaken Miner’s ability will trigger as long as you committed a crime with that spell. (2024-04-12)" @Dot_Eleven However it should be noted, that its actually CR 603.10. "Normally, objects that exist immediately after an event are checked to see if the event matched any trigger conditions, [...]" that makes it function (in conjunction with the casting of a spell being one event), rather than targeting happening after paying of costs. By the time you actually target for a spell or ability (Step 3: CR 601.2c, you have not yet paid (Step 8: 601.2h) or even calculated(Step 6: 601.2f) the total costs.
@seandun7083
@seandun7083 Месяц назад
While you technically choose targets before you pay costs, crimes are only checked once you are finished with the process of casting the spell/activating the ability or putting the trigger on the stack, which will be after you pay the costs. Therefore, FM will be in your graveyard and will trigger. Rulings on Forsaken Miner: "Forsaken Miner’s last ability triggers only if Forsaken Miner is in your graveyard at the moment you cast a spell, activate an ability, or put a triggered ability on the stack with one or more targets that constitute a crime. For example, if you cast a sorcery spell that destroyed two target creatures and your targets were a creature controlled by an opponent and Forsaken Miner, Forsaken Miner’s ability won’t trigger. However, if you cast a spell with an additional cost of “Sacrifice a creature” and you sacrifice Forsaken Miner to pay that cost, Forsaken Miner’s ability will trigger as long as you committed a crime with that spell." "The spell or ability that constituted a crime doesn’t have to have resolved yet or at all. As soon as you’re finished casting the spell, activating the ability, or putting the triggered ability on the stack, you’ve committed a crime."

In the example where Cackling Counterpart was played from hand and resolved targetting Torrential Hearhulk, could you not pay the Flashback before the token's effect is resolved to have two copies of Cackling Counterpart (both of which could target Torrential Gearhulk) on stack, which should resolve to two more tokens? Still not infinite, but three 5/6 for 10 CMC isnt bad at all.
@seandun7083

If you flash it back with Gearhulk's trigger on the stack, the trigger will fizzle since it's target it's no longer in the graveyard.

Hello Dave, quick question, can you make a creature equipped with knife (MKM) attack twice, like if it had double strike by sacrificing the knife just after first trike step?
@seandun7083
@seandun7083 Месяц назад
No. The rules for the first strike step make it clear that during the normal damage step, only attackers that "didn't have first strike or double strike as the combat damage step began" get to deal damage, as well as those that currently have double strike. This has the consequence of making it so that you can neither simulate double strike nor prevent something from dealing damage at all by adding or removing first strike at specific times. 510.4: If at least one attacking or blocking creature has first strike (see rule 702.7) or double strike (see rule 702.4) as the combat damage step begins, the only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are those with first strike or double strike. After that step, instead of proceeding to the end of combat step, the phase gets a second combat damage step. The only creatures that assign combat damage in that step are the remaining attackers and blockers that had neither first strike nor double strike as the first combat damage step began, as well as the remaining attackers and blockers that currently have double strike. After that step, the phase proceeds to the end of combat step.

I had never seen the extended rules on flashback before. Does that mean if someone casts a card using the Flashback ability, and I Narset's Reversal it, it gets exiled instead of going into their hand? That's pretty neat.

I have a question. How would Voracious Hydra work with Doubling Season. For example I play Voracious Hydra and pay 10 for the X cost. Then choose to double counters on him with his etb triggered ability. If doubling season is in play how many counters do I have? Wonder if you could make a video covering this interaction?
@seandun7083
@seandun7083 Месяц назад
Doubling Season will affect both the "enters with" ability and the "double the amount of+1/+1 counters" ability. From the rulings: "Doubling Season affects permanents that enter the battlefield with a certain number of counters." This means that if X is 10, it will enter with 10 * 2 = 20 and then add 20 * 2 = 40 more for a total of 60.

Torrential Gearhulk + Remand actually raises an interesting question: If someone Remands the card I cast with the Gearhulk's ETB, then I cast that card from my hand, will it be put into the graveyard or exile when it resolves?

Torrential Gearhulk now says ‘spell’ instead of ‘card’, as it’s now a different spell (but the same card), it would go to the graveyard
@pkinsect6618
@pkinsect6618 Месяц назад
A "card" in game terms is not exactly the same as a physical piece of cardboard In particular, -going to a private zone (like the hand)- changing zones causes a card to "forget" that it's the "same card" (in game terms) as before, so effects that applied to it do not apply anymore Edit : @gaelyte2550 pointed out that this is true for all zones, not just private ones, except in the very specific cases where a card *needs* to remember it's the same one to function properly (these cases are listed in rule 400.7)

@@pkinsect6618 Changing to any zone would make Torrential Gearhulk forget it was supposed to exile it Well, except if you put it in the graveyard of course
@pkinsect6618
@pkinsect6618 Месяц назад
@@gaelyte2550 You're right, since the text was changed to "spell" it would lose this "property" as soon as it stops being a spell, i.e. as soon as it leaves the stack What I said applies only to effects that still use the word "card" even with the current templating Though the only way for the difference to matter here would require to exile it in another way before it goes to the graveyard (since exile is the only public zone where an instant can go that isn't the stack or the graveyard), and then try to return it to the graveyard in some other way. In that case the effect with the word "card" would try to exile it then too, but since the word was changed to "spell" you're right that it would already have forgotten by then
@gaelyte2550
@gaelyte2550 Месяц назад
@@pkinsect6618 Card would equally forget about it. The only difference between "card", "spell" and "permanent" is that a card is in hand/graveyard/exile/command zone/library, a spell is on the stack and a permanent is on the battlefield

If Cackling Counterpart were to have madness, would that cause this to go infinite? (Because it would be exiled before going to the graveyard?)

Madness triggers only when a card is discarded, it wouldn't apply here at all, since you're not discarding it.

Hey Dave, I have a question. I’ve been told this works but haven’t able to find out why. Here’s the situation Amy exiles Misthollow Griffin with Food Chain. She then casts Griffin from exile repeating the food chain loop until she has a million of each color of mana. She has a blind obedience in play and beings casting Griffin paying for the extort cost. Can Amy do that?
@spacesquid4298
@spacesquid4298 Месяц назад
no, food chain can't pay for extort
@Mattwae
@Mattwae Месяц назад
To elaborate, Food Chain's mana can only be used to pay for creature spells. Extort is however a triggered ability, and thus can't be payed for by food chain's mana.

I’m fine with the rules doing it this way. The version of this I’m not okay with is a Legend Ruled Sharuum targeting itself. I know why it works but it makes negative one sense.
@JasonOshinko
@JasonOshinko Месяц назад
The concept is the same. Sharuum enters the battlefield. State-based actions are checked. The legend rule puts all but one into its owner's graveyard. Sharuum's triggered ability goes onto the stack. Since that card is now in the graveyard, it can be targeted by that ability. Activated and triggered abilities exist independently of their sources.
