Funny thing, western Germany (BRD) was literally like its anthem - best in the world. Automotive, chemical, pharmacy, semiconductor, sports, machinery industry, wihich production still best in the world since 1960s. Eastern Germany (DDR) against its anthem, wasn't a successful country.

Internationalism was the name of the game, so the anthem's lyrics weren't sung since the the 60s, state flags were banned and Prussian culture (for example my father's favorite dish, "Königsberger Klopse", was renamed "Kochklopse" in the GDR since Königsberg is East Prussian) was supressed.
