DDR5 prices may have come down, but when you're building on a budget, all the affordable motherboards are DDR4. And you can pair them with a 13600k and have a blast.

Depends on ddr5 speed and you can't make up for the latency hit from ddr5 as you can with ddr4 4000mhz gear 1. Need gear 2 8000mhz to match controller speed for low latency.

The b die is faster on 13th gen but you need to set the mobo to gear 1 mode cause at certain speeds it will automatically go to gear 2, 3600 cl14 is faster than cl 18 in gear 1 mode and its a one click thing intel mobo have this since 11th gen like 1:2 mode in ryzen. This isnt super important but explains why you saw worse b die results.

Buying "new" DDR5 .. but "upgrading" DDR4 to DDR5 requires not only the waste of an expensive motherboard but also of your prior DDR4 RAM which is insane. Otherwise if you're going to repurpose the old motherboard and ram then maybe.

I upgraded to a ddr4 motherboard with a 13500. Its not the end of the world. I did cheap out. The next couple of generations of cpus and gpus will matter even more with ddr5. Its not a major loss. But it was a an upgrade because my z270 motherboard was giving out with wifi and started blue screening. With power cycling on top of it. It was time to replace. I upgraded to a 64gb kit later too. Still cheaper than ddr5 though. Not by insane amounts though. Still plan on getting the i9. I realized I wanted more cpu power for UE5 and blender. My RTX 4070 is okay though. If it was late 2024 or mid 2025. Why are you buying a ddr4 machine at that point. I can get push back and people would say. Why did buy a ddr4 system now. Answer: I cheap out and get what I need at that moment. Just bought a wif m.2 card for it. because it didn't come with one months later.

Maybe the better question is, suppose you changed the motherboard and got DDR5, would that small performance bump with a 4090 actually improve your experience? I don't think that it would. Like, OK on paper you get a few more FPS, but that isn't going to be 'transformative', not any more than it already was with getting the biggest video card in the history of video cards!

This. I got my 13900k a year ago when DDR5 mobos and RAM were insanely expensive. So, I was looking at another $600-$700 on top of a $600 CPU for approx. $1300 total. Instead, I kept my DDR4 and got a $230 Z790 mobo.

Fiddling with RAM is time consuming and the returns are uncertain. Most of the time, the differences are not humanly detectable. With DDR4 make sure you are using dual rank modules (usually found in 16GB and higher capacity) if you are using only two RAM slots.

after years of having my older system 6850k i saw intel cpu special gamer day and the 13700k was 474$ Cad, so im pretty sure i should see a massive performance bump altho its not a 13900k which is full price atm 285$ difference... plus taxes that is so with the rebate i got on the 13700k its the equivalent of tax free so worth it... now i can reuse my old hardware... im gonna wait a bit for the mother, i saw that manifacturer are about to come out with the refreshed z790 which im willing to wait for they will have some upgrades and compared to my x99 platform its gonna be a massive upgrade for nic, wifi and ram speed supported. still trying to figure the ram im gonna put on it as now Bdie is not what u want so gotta find Adie now and proper motherboard to tag with it with at least 6 or more sata ports as i have alot of drives.
@Solrac-Siul
@Solrac-Siul Год назад
As some people may be noting, the difference on the 3600-14 to 3800-18 may be due to the motherboard changing from g1 to auto (what will be g2). if you are willing to "lose " some time and tune the b-die and change some voltages (Assuming it is of good quality), you may manage to run those same 3600-14 at 3800 -15 or even 4000-16 on gear 1, and generally the 13900k or silicon lottery allowing, the 13700k are able to sustain 4000-14/15/16 in gear 1 mode. With all that said, at 4k , the difference is really small, and even depends on the game and it's engine, to the point that if playing above 1440 and with a 4090, it becomes hard to notice. And if there is no 4090, then the difference of performance is within margin of error.

I also tried the ram at 5600 for a while, same situation. CPU Idle -> ~ 35-38 celsius. CPU gaming on CPU intensive games -> ~ 50-60 at max, depending on the game. "Fun" fact - when I launch C23 on multicore test, sometimes the app crashes or my PC reboots as well with the temp going up to ~ 88-92 .. which is kinda normal for C23 and this CPU i guess..
