Thank you! I now have a name to associate with my condition. In my case, I've had this for 40 long years. I had a 80 lb backpack fall down from an overhead bin onto my thumb, cranking it way back. I saw a doctor a month later, who said there's nothing he could do, it should heal in time. Yeah, negative, nope, no joy. My occupation does Not present any repetitive stress that would aggravate it. It has cycled throughout life, for periods not too noticeable, and then flaring up again for weeks at a time when some pressure has aggravated it. I started playing guitar, and it bothers me with that (it's my my left fretting hand). For relief, I discovered the first method you outlined, simply massaging my own pain. I find it also helpful to compress the tendon just above the wrist, with the thumb of the opposing hand - just a variation on same. The 2nd method you outline sounds like a great idea; I'll work with that as well. Due to loss with age, and now picking up guitar, I've adopted a wide range of strength and stretching exercises I use for wrist and fingers. Oddly, despite tremendous improvement in both hand strength (3x) and flexibility across all fingers resulting from this, it has done nothing to assist with the pain from De Quervain's Disease. Actually, I fight that pain when doing grip strength training.

I don't have pain as such, but I play darts and have had some very frustrating limitations over the last few years with what seem similar to this. So frustrating and have tried so many stretches/massages

Debilitating pain in left thumb as you indicate. Went to half the dose of statin and pain dissapeared but now is back. 20 mg to 10 mg. I use the ice , it helps . The muscle massage also helps and tendon tunnel massage helps.

Question for you please. Aside from the pain I feel when I move my thumb or wrist in certain ways, when I stretch my thumb out, I feel something popping near the base. Also when I twist my wrist, I feel something popping on the top side of my wrist. Is this common with this condition? I have had x-rays done and they are negative for any fractures or breaks. Thanks

I had a stroke 2 yrs ago which mostly affected my right arm & hand. Slowly but surely the stiffness & pain has INCREASED along with this pain you described here. I get SHARP pains if I lift something or bend my wrist the wrong way. Sorry, my question is...Could this be a result of my stroke?

Do you recommend to go see a chiropractor before an orthopedic Dr.? I mean the orthopedic will probably first use MRI to see the condition inside and make a diagnosis accordingly.

Chiropractor will normally be more than capable of diagnosing the issue. MRI will rarely help treatment unless you eventually need more aggressive types of treatment. Chiropractor is always best first step as it’s non invasive. Surgery should only be last option and rarely does it need to go that far of you have a good Chiropractor looking after you.

@@drstevenhulmeWhat kind of chiropractic treatment do you recommend? I have dequervains, but also with alot of pain in the neck and shoulder. I'm not sure I should have someone crack the neck. I'd truly appreciate some guidance. Thank you.
