Scholars agree that women were once ordained as deacons, but it's less clear what that means for the Catholic Church today. What lessons and principles can we learn from our history?
Fr. Casey, ‪@BreakingInTheHabit‬, reclaims more Catholic history in this episode that unravels some of the misconceptions and assumptions we have about female ordination in Christianity.

I think that if the Blessed Virgin Mary saw so need to become the high priestess of the church, then that says alot about the role women should take in the church. I am slowly working through "The Mystical City of God" by Ven. Mary of Agreda in there it is very clear that the Blessed Virgin Mary took an extremely humble position towards the Apostles and Peter as her superiors in the church. I think we as women need to embrace the role of Mary. A humble servant who intercedes for and serves the priests and people of the church. If it was good enough for Mary, it is good enough for me. Also, as a Franciscan, you would have to think if anyone could have brought about making women deaconesses or priests it would have been St Francis. He was told to rebuild the church. And, St Clare was certainly a women he held in high regard for her holiness. Why would St Francis not have made her a priest in his order? He was certainly esteemed enough that he could have made it happen if that was what was necessary to rebuild the church. So, no, I'm not buying into this one bit. I'd rather be an Anchoress than a Deaconess any day.

The real question is: “why now?” It hasn’t been the case for hundreds of years. The answer to “why now” is that people want to follow the spirit of the age. This is not about anything more than attempting to conform the Church more closely to the modern secular world. We need to spend our time explaining the Church rather than figuring out how to make it more acceptable to the world. The world and its human movements are fleeting. A big misstep in that last sentence- “what WE allow that call to look like.” We discern what the Holy Spirit wants that call to look like, do we not?

Maybe it's because after centuries of sexual abuse of nuns by priests, or sexual abuse of women and girls, we feel it would be nice to have women to possibly be a safe-guard, not to mention be someone talk to about these sensitive subjects that sometimes a woman or girl ONLY is comfortable in sharing with another woman. This reluctance by men to allow it, and the forcefulness in the male insistence that a woman should be happy talking to a male priest or her husband (if she has one) feels like a way of making sure men are forced into every aspect, no matter how private, of a woman's life. It reminds me of the transgender ideology movement's refusal to acknowledge women as a separate kind of human being with unique needs that men don't have, insisting we should have NO reason to feel uncomfortable undressing in front of a man, no reason to want to receive medical care from a woman, or speak to a female therapist, with no exemptions even for women who are deeply traumatized by men. If any of the Churches, be it Catholic or Orthodox or Southern Baptist, etc., have any compassion for women as human beings, and can recognize that men have no right to our changing rooms at the pool, then they should have no problem recognizing that women might need someone to speak to in a church, someone ordained and well-educated, who isn't a male. It's not personal, but sadly in our fallen world where men regularly attack women and children, this is needed. Sadly, another symptom of the fallen world is men's mistaken belief that they are smarter, more spiritually sound, and holier than their female counterparts, despite that fact that they were made by women. This is not a belief God shares. Men would be wise to, well, wisen up, and stop pretending they are in any way superior to the human blueprint for life: the female. Cause you're not, you're just physically stronger, and mroe prone to using violence to assert your will. Which is EVIL behaviour.

So the gist of this video seems to be “there is no rule in the church that says women can’t be deacons, aside from the rules in the church that say women can’t be deacons.” If I’m going to be honest that seems like a pretty muddled message. In the legal profession newer president usually is valued over older president, so in this case it seems the rules against female deacons would be superior.

The Council of Trent in the 16th Century decreed the following: Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent/Session XXIII/Sacrament of Orders Canon ii. If any one shall say, that, besides the priesthood, there are not in the Catholic Church other orders, both greater and lesser, by which, as by certain steps, advance is made unto the priesthood; let him be anathema. The Diaconate is the other order that leads to the Priesthood which is spoke of in Cannon II. If a woman becomes a Deacon then that is a step that leads to the Priesthood. It has already been made abundantly clear that women will never be able to become Priests, and since there are certain steps to becoming a Priest, one of which is the Diaconate, then by reason, woman cannot become Deacons. They never have and they never will. So hopefully sometime soon the Church will address this issue and make a dogmatic decree saying such, and then we can put this puppy to bed. The Church has other problems that need to be dealt with, and this female Deacon issue is sapping time and energy away from some very serious issues. So enough with this needless distraction.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:29 📜 Scripture and early church history suggest the existence of deaconesses in the early church, indicating that women played roles in ministry. 03:10 🙌 Historical evidence supports the existence of deaconesses, with councils and records mentioning their roles in the church. 04:20 🧐 The status and roles of deaconesses in the early church were not uniform and differed in various regions, leading to uncertainty about their ordination. 07:48 🕊️ The diaconate is distinct from the presbyterate (priesthood), and ordaining women to the diaconate doesn't necessarily lead to the priesthood, according to Pope Benedict XVI. 09:14 📚 The question of ordaining women as deacons is being actively discussed in the church, and Pope Francis has initiated a study to explore this possibility.

Church tradition also states that women should not be deacons because of the requirement of only one blood being shed on the altar, Christ's blood in the Eucharist can be the only blood upon the altar. This is why there was the requirement of woman being over the age of 40, so that their rearing of children and cycle may cease in the few cases the historical anomaly has occured. Outside of that, many churches started realizing having women on the altar was a bad idea due to the precedent of Sarah in the bible where a woman past her time might concieve.

The first ecumenical council used didache as a template and replaced the word deaconess with καλόγρια in the corresponding section with the same requirements, widows and virgins age 40. Literally, female monastics subsumed the role of female servants (deaconesses) and never had parochial liturgical roles equivalent to ordained deacons who MUST be eligible in all manners and impediments to become priests. Nuns can carry the Eucharist to women, and distribute it in the monastery and even go into the altar area to assist a priest, but would never wear the vestments of a deacon signifying an order of priesthood and eligibility to become a priest. A "deaconess" (female servant) is fine, but not a "female deacon" which is an order of priesthood.

Personal sanctity and the higher perfections of a vocation aren't necessarily connected except in Christ Himself. The BVM's sanctity is unmatched among creatures, but the vocation she had, as unique and essential is still below that of the priesthood. Her special vocation was to aid in Christ's redemptive work. The priest is actually sharing in the redemptive work itself.

I have yet to see a reputable translation say women instead of wives. And why would they go back to men in verse 11 to say the husband of one wife. Wouldn't it make sense for them to say the wife of one husband as well. Lastly in acts 6 they chose seven men, not seven persons to do the work. That is the evidence we have, when people have an issue with what scripture says, their go to is that it was mistranslated. That is exactly why there are gay bibles and so many others because people are looking through the lens of this culture.

Honestly, with the information presented in the video, i know firmly believe that the biggest reason women's ordenation was forbbiden it's because of misoginy. Especially when it was mentioned the "laying on of hands". I don't think men and women having different "roles" (i don't think that's the best word to describe it, but oh well) in The Church is inherently a bad thing. For example, with Vatican 2 Consecrated Virginity was re-established and it is a vocation only women can partake in. I think the real problem is in that women in the Church don't get a voice when it comes to big desicions. There is so much more that can be done with women-only vocations in The Church, but sadly it´s been neglected because of misoginy. But i have no doubt change is coming.

Several points need to be made 1. Junia, as mentioned in Romans 16 is called, by Paul, an apostle, which there is very strong evidence that this individual was female. 2. Apostle is one who is sent, and the doctrine of apostolic succession states that the bishops and priests must trace itself back to an apostle in an unending laying on of hands to transmit grace. This is what gives the individual the validity in their ordination. 3. So if apostolic succession is indeed important and necessary, and Junia is considered an apostle, then she could have laid on hands for the transmission of Grace, but could not have been able to say communion. Yet, the males that she laid on hands, to give them validity in ordination, could... How can Junia be acknowledged as an apostle, but unable to do the sacraments? What ontological difference in maleness versus femaleness prevent a female from being able to be a priest? Why can’t a woman act in the person of Christ? Doesn’t the Donatist heresy show us that the Priest is only the channel of God’s Grace in the sacraments and not the source of Grace. There certainly does not seem to be any reason that a woman could not be a channel of God’s Grace; unless you state that there is a distinctive ontological difference in being a woman versus a man. So what is it? Can God not confer grace, because they happen to be a woman? I say this all of this as a former Catholic, and current Episcopalian. In the Episcopal Church we have acknowledged that there is not an Ontological distinction that would prevent a woman from being a Priest, rather it is a cultural distinction that can and should be abolished.

What is it about bread that allows it to become the body of our Lord? Why cant we use another food like bagels or pretzels? What is the ontological distiction that makes bread and wine the only chanels for grace in the eucharist? Do you think that if there is no ontological distinction that we should be able to temper with the eucharist in whatever way we seem fit? For, as you said, if it is not ontological than it can only be cultural, and so might be done away with to better ajust to todays culture, right? No. We dont "play around" with the sacraments. We do as we have recieved from those who came before since time immemorial. No one can change the eucharist from bread to bagel, because that is how Our Lord commanded the apostles to do, and no one has autority to change that for any reason. I also remind you that there existis not only ontological and cultural differences but also symbolical. For the correct understanding of what a symbol is I recommend reading "crisis of religious symbolism" by Jean Borella. Needless to say men and women symbolize different things.

Then stay an Episcopalian. Why must the church conform to your world view when there are plenty of options for those who seek it like you did. I was raised Catholic. Left to find a better way. Finally, I ended up at a Lutheran church. When the male pastor retired, they hired a female pastor. It never felt right, so I left and came home to the Catholic church. During that time, I also read the Bible cover to cover. It became clear that the only way I could be in covenant with God was to return to the Catholic Church founded by Jesus Christ.

God created us as men and women, it is a very clear distinction. When Jesus instituted the Eucharist he gave clear instructions to his Apostles of doing what he had done in his memory, offering his Body for the salvation of mankind. It has the Son of Man who was nailed on the Cross, who was crowned as King of the Jews, and who ascended to the presence of the Father. The Holy Word of God was incarnated in the Holy Virgin Mary, to fulfill the promises of God to Israel. And it was in a woman, in whom the Word took flesh. God bounded himself to humanity forever when the Word took flesh in Mary. From a woman, the Son of God was born. It is not a cultural matter the distinct roles that men and women play in the Church. The Chruch is the pillar of Truth in the world, we shall be alert and awaken. Many will come arguing belonging to the Body of Christ but the fruits of their work will show whole they are. Who does not love the Truth, do not love God.

So the Catholic churches argument for not ordaining women is because "only men can act in the person of Christ". Why have you focused on gender alone as the basis for this decision? On this basis surely we should only ordain men from Nazareth who are Jews!! I know that this sacredly held by Catholics but the basis for the discrimination is looking weaker and weaker in the 21st century. (But I am a Protestant).

You come off sounding very arrogant sometimes - as in your dispute in reference to the argument involving Mary. Just because it doesn't fit what you necessarily think/your ability to reason, doesn't mean that it is a flawed argument. You also fail to take into account nuances in translation of scripture, etc. In addition, we need to consider the theology involved in an all men Bishops, Priests, Deacons. There is a reason for this. Modern man looks to his own thoughts/reasonings. A portion of our clergy has been poorly formed. A more thorough study of this topic on your part would have been wise before you put out this podcast. in your effort to sounded informed, you have just caused more confusion. We agree that the role of deaconesses changed over time, and we agree some of these changes happened because some people didn't like the idea of women holding such positions of authority But then you mention examples of deaconesses having very limited roles as proof that they were never equal to male deacons, which in light of everything else you mentioned seems unlikely Rather it seems very possible that the early church had high degrees of gender equality, leading to deaconesses but also to women like Priscilla being very important leaders. Sadly that equality was eroded over time because the sexist ideas that already existed in society, those ideas changed how the church worked until deaconesses became entirely extinct Of course the conclusion is the same that you mentioned, nothing in the modern theology of the church stops women from being deaconesses with the responsibilities as male deacons My point is just that we should be aware that the ideas of the church have been influenced and changed over the two thousand years it has existed. Paul wouldn't teach the same theology the church teaches today

Augustine is the problem more than Paul in this case, because Augustine saw us as filth and the progenitors of original sin. So long as Catholicism clings to original sin as its necessary scapegoat, so that people have something to blame, rather than doing the actual work to live a sinless life, or one a free o sin as possible, so long as THAT system stays in place, no woman will be ordained to the priesthood in Catholicism. and I've said it before: if Catholicism could change in its fundamental structure, it wouldn't be Catholicism anymore. And yes, this stuff makes me angry. even if you, YOU personally, Casey, respect women, your vocation gives you no choice but to treat us like Augustine wanted: as fourth fiddle.

@@ActiveAdvocate1 I don’t think there’s any harm in acknowledging that men and women have different roles to fulfill in the church, or in society at large for that matter. And I think your first comment points out exactly why the church shouldn’t change on this subject, if it did, or if the church changed its mind on a number of other issues, it would no longer be the church, and I doubt that abandoning various positions would bring anyone closer to God in the long term, as GK Chesterton once wrote “we do not want a church that moves with the world, we want a church that moves the world.” On a sidenote I do find it pretty funny that most of the people pushing for women priests, are either not Catholic, or about as far from Orthodox as you can get without openly being a heretic. It’s almost like you lot care more about your various political agendas, then you do about Christ and his church.

@@allthenewsordeath5772, you know, weird tangent, but GK Chesterton was friends with a man I took as my guru when I first became a Pantheist. Do you know the name Alan Watts? Go look him up. He was friends with Chesterton despite not, and I repeat, NOT being a Christian. As to "heretic", I will wear that badge proudly, even if you mean something intrinsically negative by it. I refuse to support a church that will openly, legally torture children. Finding out about the Indigenous residential "schools" is what put the last touch on my de-conversion, though it had begun much, much earlier than when I found out about that. I think I officially STARTED to de-convert when I was 21 or 22, and made a vow of total nonviolence between just me and the world Itself. I haven't knowingly so much as killed a bug since then, and I'm 31 years old now. As to not knowing anything about the subject, I was born into Catholicism, and I have two degrees in philosophy and Religious Studies hanging on my wall. So...to answer that point of view, I IDO know about it, but you're right in saying that I care more about the politics than about Jesus. Because JESSU cared more about the politics than he cared about himself. Or haven't you noticed that he would defend others, at least with words, but not himself? Not a very "me focused" kind of guy. Ironically, I like Jesus too much to be a Christian. Follow the Message, don't worship the messenger.

@allthenewsordeath5772 2 года назад
@@ActiveAdvocate1 GK Chesterton was friends with a lot of people, he was mortal Frenemies with Bernard Shaw to as I recall. As far as indigenous schools go, it’s pretty disingenuous to blame those on the church, when it was the official policy of the Canadian government, and those schools regularly requested more funding and medical aid but did not receive it. I’m not saying the church is completely blameless in that matter, but the media has certainly blown it out of proportion, particularly when it comes to describing mass graves, which could more accurately be described as graveyards. Also Jesus wasn’t political, that was one of his points “give on to Caesar what is Caesars, and give to God what is God’s.” That is some thing I found rather difficult to stomach myself, that the truth of Christ and his church do not call any particular political persuasion home, as much as conservatives would like it to do so, care for the poor and care for the unborn, are not mutually exclusive. But I digress, Christ and the church he instituted are inseparable, you cannot turn your back on one without turning your back on the other. Mind you I will not deny your right to do so, and pantheism is better than many other things, but we should refrain from telling each other how to walk the other persons path. Also there is a pretty major difference between calling out crimes and abuse in the church out of a desire to help and bring justice for the victims, and wishing to see the church preserved and grow, and just using them as clubs to beat the faithful over the head with, and while I cannot speak to your motives and it would be both improper and rude of me to do so, I can say that by and large the media in the English-speaking world has leaned more into the latter than the former. Lastly, with Christianity and Catholicism in particular, the message and the messenger are quite inseparable, that is the whole point of our great liturgy, at every mass we present Christ’s sacrifice. You cannot only have the word, because the Word was made flesh.
