You have excellent fault finding skills. I still prefer desktop PC's they are far eaisier to find faults unless you wish to go down to component level, most of the time it is not worth the hassle and time, time costs money.

@@spongebob1679 my opinion? any amount of time you spend learning new things is worth it. Not only it is good for your brain, but also gives a lot of satisfaction and occasional dopamine hit. Sorin may not be the best example of dopamine hit, he seems very calm and introvert, but people are occasonally screaming on videos when the device suddenly comes to life. I sometimes dance when device "wakes up" LOL 🙂 My Mate Vince for example has pretty visible dopamine hit on his videos. I'm 45 and my goal is to learn English, and then Spanish (will start in 2 years). During covid I started learning electronics, now I have a half-decent space with tools and even upload a video from time to time. It also became my gate to get to know many people, as my daily job is software development (no contact with people outside my team). And above all it is nice to see people happy when I return their device working - some just can't hide their emotions if the device was important to them.
@DIYRepairHour
@DIYRepairHour 11 месяцев назад
@@spongebob1679 as for when device is not repaired - I get the feeling as if I failed. But this is a thing - whenever you trying to learn a new skill you will fail. Let's look at sports - you will loose to someone almost every time. But eventually you will win. And you stick to that thought, that keeps you going. With electronics is much easier, and harder at the same time. Easier - because you have community you can ask for help. And you will get help, the repair community is great. Also there is a set limit - either you have no parts or device is not repairable, so you won't automatically blame yourself. Harder - beause from time to time when you deem device not repairable, you will doubt if that is really the case. But it is more-or-less the same as learning any new skill.

I'm currently working on a Lenovo ideapad 330 and it has a short on the power rails, and like this example it's also a single integrated board. I've removed and tested one set of MOSFETs and the short remained, and none of the devices was short, so now I'm off to the next cluster of components. I was hoping to see a dead ceramic or tantalum cap, but no joy. No visible damage at all. The thermal camera looks like quite a valuable tool.

It can still live as a gaming machine if it has either 2 nvme slots or Thunderbolt: with 2x nvme you can connect an external gpu through an eGPU adapter through one of them. Or if it has nvme and SATA. For me even a 17" laptop screen is too small for anything except very casual gaming, need external keyboard too.

There is a huge difference if the processor and the memory suffered a 19V electric shock instead of 1+V for the 2V GPU memory... if Musfat shorted everything around with it, memory controller, power controller and more!!!! Only in situations where there is no image short, GPU disappeared on a memory message is it possible to replace memories. Even in this case you have to replace them all. A computer over 4 years old is considered old. To replace a huge amount of components, the cost of such a repair is very expensive and unprofitable. Because you also have to give responsibility to the customer

The battery life has taken a hit losing about 45mins to 1 hour of total time because I believe the gpu chips are shorted and using lots of power. Sorin, can you make a video with some ideas for protecting against this type of failure on a working gaming laptop. I know this sounds crazy but if anyone can come up with a dodgy addon i know its you!
@hbh3144
@hbh3144 11 месяцев назад
That would be interesting as I was thinking the same watching those "nothing could be done" videos. Some minor fault should not kill everything. Just quick googling it suggests using zener diode or similar device to protect against overvoltage. Turns out fastest "zener diode" you can buy is the GPU/CPU/RAM itself :) So that's a dead end. So may be this fault is not that minor after all. It appears mosfet in this application is comparable to dam keeping away all the water on one side. For gaming laptops that dam is huge. If it goes nothing stands a chance downstream. Running away is not an option as it simply too fast when fails. So how we deal with that? Build them as tough as we can then monitor, protect and maintain. Evacuate/rebuild when it develops a crack. It does not look like this strategy is used for mosfets. Tough - no. We want them as small and efficient as possible because laptop must be small and battery life is a thing. Monitor - no. That's an interesting topic on itself. Protect/maintain - somewhat. Adding thermal pad and keeping all those capacitors 😀helps a bit as the water is more calm and not battering it. Rebuild - no. But you could replace all mosfets yearly together with thermal paste 😀. So perhaps many dams in series with water level lower after each of it? If one fails others will keep it. Just a bit more water will pass through? But that would require a lot of dams. For speed and efficiency CPU/GPU use low voltage with low tolerance. On other side there is considerably higher voltage because we want long and thin cables with flimsy connectors. And it's the mosfet that stands in between this conflict. Let's say to get 1V tolerance it would require some 20 mosfets in series. All of them pass current so will heat up 20 times more. So goes the battery life and all the efficiency. Not to mention there is no space for them. Adding mosfets in parallel shares the load reducing stress but also increase the probability of failure as now there are more of them. So likely there is some constant how many should be in parallel so it actually reduce not increase the risk. That's already done. Some even can be switched off when there is no need for power. I may be wrong since I'm no expert on this. Just some thoughts in the wild. Other ideas?

That VRAM chip was dead anyway, so it would still be worth removing it to prove the point. If something else really does get hot, the point would be proven that the GPU chip is dead. But if nothing happens then the short went only as far as the VRAM chip. You know, I absolutely love your videos, but it seems to me that you simply didn't want to reball a replacement chip, which is understandable and it would be best to just address it like it is.
