The fact that he doesn't edit out the mistakes is what makes the videos more enjoyable. It also makes it easier to memorize the correct order to follow when checking things.

Yes actually he is genuine to show everything he does. Great job anyhow. Actually, I spotted once I saw that there is 18.8v at main power rail than input 19.5 which is most probably the mosfet is shorted

I just wanted to drop in and say thank you for sharing your wisdom. I got into soldering/desoldering/troubleshooting PCBs a couple months ago and have since got a nice little setup. Your videos are proving to be the most beneficial to me as I begin learning how electricity moves through a board, how to follow it across the board and spot failures etc. Thank you again for your amazing work! Keep being an amazing human! :)

A warranty job always adds extra weight (some more pressure on our shoulders). If I were the owner of that device, I would know from now on who my trusted electronic technician will be and I can imagine the type of recommendation he will make to his family, co-workers and close friends. Another way of saying it, some technicians enforce the warranty much better than some representatives of the manufacturing companies themselves. Thank you very much for sharing. A brotherly greeting from Mexico.

Sometimes, we get ahead of our own rule book and actually make schoolboy errors. We ALL do this! I don't care what people may say, we are all guilty of this. "It won't be that so...." then an hour later we find it WAS that! Sorin, the fact you publish this, with the error of assuming the mosfet was good when it was actually the issue is commendable. Bottom line is you still fixed it. Can't believe! :)

I had similar problem with my laptop. It started to shut down randomly by itself. It even started to not coming on after some time. After disassembly the voltage on a main power rail was 6.0v, but without short circuit. The voltage was dropped on the first MOSFET, multimeter showed the gate shorted with the source. MOSFET replacement solved the issue.

Nice job Sorin its even an amazing example of how mosfets are dying when people start undervolting CPUs etc and they are watching only the low temps of the chip, not knowing if the voltage to the gate of a N-FET is correct to be able to bridge S to D correclty

Great job anyway!. You are honest to show your mistakes even. What I do usually check adapter voltage and compare it with the current sense resistor. Mostly if I get 0.7v or 0.8v lesser voltage than adapter voltage at current sense resistor like 18.8v in your case. I will definitely check the 1st 2 mosfets and if you are not getting drive of 24v at gate. Then there is 70% chance that the MOSFET is shorted. Mostly the 1st mosfet gets shorted. Also, there is 30% chance that charger IC may be faulty. But in some cases, charger IC will be good, both main power mosfets also will be good, but gate drive will be absent. In this case, I used to check the 10ohms resistor in series to charger IC, if those 10ohms rise to 1Kohms then current flow to charger IC becomes insufficient and charger IC will not produce 24v with its internal charge pump for the gate drives. These what I consider. Hope this might be helpful.

does this mean that if laptop charger is supposed to be lets say 19.0V and you plug a charger that`s only outputting 18.0V then mosfet will get hotter with more with 18v charger compared to 19v charger and possibly blow up the mosfet?

did you use the same temperature on the hot air station to remove first and second mosfet ? today i was working on tp link modem there were 3 shorted ICs (TPS562208) it's a small IC how to know which temp i should use to remove it and replace it ? i tried 380C and 15% airflow speed because there was too small components near it

I have an Acer Nitro 5 AN515-45-R3HB, bought in july 2022, Ryzen 5 5600H + RTX 3060. It consumes battery while plugged in and in-stress ( while gaming ). I've noticed though it also gets consumed while browsing the desktop, just much slower ( 1% in 1-2hours, gets recharged ). I have replaced the charger with one from Acer of higher power ( 230W, same Voltage, same polarity, different Amp ) and it is not dragging more power, so it is not the charger at fault or a lack of power under stress. I think it is some kind of shortage somewhere and I think of sending the laptop in warranty, but I replaced the RAMs and the HDD with an SSD. Originally, the laptop couldn't be stressed because the RAM was so bad the laptop barely had 40fps in CSGO. So I think that if I send it in warranty they will send it back to me telling that it has no problems ( I need the laptop because it is my only computer at hand, and I use it for university and work, so if it is not worth sending it to warranty I'd avoid it). I'm curious what could be the issue. I'm a CS&E student studying computers and electronics. I'm not saying that I want to repair it myself because it is worth a lot of money, I'm just curious what problem it has. (Romania)

ASUS doesn't take this seriously. It allows 3 charges in Windows, 4th discharge in Bios enables new features for the laptop. But Asus tricks the customers with continuously reducing the battery power to 50 min max, that means, only 40 minutes can be actuay used for Amd Turion. Acer is much better, it enables all features possible depending on the battery's manufacturer, szch as Sanyo. Asus sends a drone to take out Asus mice for extreme high price, financed by multiple countries. To take out an Asus Mouse, the air strike can cost 20 thousand dollars.

In all acer nitro / aspire that i encountered similar problem it was always the faulty input mosfets , symptoms are no 25v on gates (usually its 19v) and as result BQ senses voltage drop, enters safe mode and stops charging batteries and disables turbo bust on cpu. Usually that problem occurs after short circuit on motherboard and often input transistors are looking good , after you check them with multimeter they react like they are perfectly working , but after you swap them to new one's you get 25v on gates and completely working laptop

But we should not just randomly check MOSFETs for shorts. Like you did here, we should be spend time gathering information with what we can observe with minimal intervention. In this case, you decided your next step is to rule out the common element between what presents as a battery related fault and power rail charging fault. This time you picked the mid-point in your 'divide and decide'. The thing that might bring you to the start of the chain was the heat and volt drop on the MOSFETs. Not a terrible mistake, it just happened that you picked the wrong part to interrogate next.
@OnStageLighting
@OnStageLighting Год назад
The answer is always in the last place you look...
@inwerp
@inwerp Год назад
thats quite straightforward. you got B+ short, you replace inrush fets, at least, first one.
@OnStageLighting
@OnStageLighting Год назад
@@inwerp I wasn't keen on swapping the BQ at that point, in similar situations I do whatever to test with a bypass of the first two MOSFETs completely where possible. However, I'm also aware that I have a tendency to want to verify to a point when a colleague will just say "FFS , stop testing everything and just change the IC." It's a balance. I can just see how the situation happened in this case - unlike a previous vid where a stick of RAM wasn't properly eliminated which is just a rookie error probably made worse by recording a video.
@inwerp
@inwerp Год назад
@@OnStageLighting yep, that all makes sense. however i just wanted to point that B+ short which was the original issue of the board causes inrush FET to be shorted very often, so checking DC-IN part is a mandatory thing after fixing B+, both DrMos or capacitor shorts on HPB boards. If thats NVDC like on all Macbooks there is also quite possible to have damaged BatFet, which is also easy to overlook and get as "warranty" repair later. Dots "B+ short - DCIN FET shorted should always be connected as one issue.

Further tests also shows short circuit around the GPu caps.

Taking a step back the original fault of a capacitor short on the MB would have possibly put a stress on the input MOSFETS. I really wonder if due to the stress, it would have been worth changing both the MOSFETS. In hindsight if the supply B+ voltage is low then the current will increase (same power required to run laptop). That current has to pass through something. In your case the two MOSFETS. I think the interest in your head at the moment is software, not hardware and that may be impacting on the diagnosis. It happens to us all.
