Single player = Success or Failure Live Service = Dead or Not Dead Two VERY different metrics depending on which of the those two types a game is. Anyone who says a single player game is "dead" should be immediately disregarded as a glue eater, because that term makes no sense in that context.

The difference is that a good Single player game is NEVER dead. You can always go back and experience it in its glory. A Live service game on the other hand is always on life support. Once the player base starts to dry up... It's finished and the experience often dies with it. Single Player Games > Multiplayer Games. As it always was.

@pinobluevogel6458
@pinobluevogel6458 20 дней назад
In a way, calling it a dead game before it is even released feels incredibly wrong. Technically it is wrong as well, as the game is still playable. It just lost a large portion of it's player count, which is very common among games, live service games even more so. I know I was interested in the title, as I saw it covered on some channels I frequent, including Asmongold's. When I looked at the game right when it was popular, I decided to wait until more content was added and it came out for real instead of in early access. In a way, I probably completely missed the window were enough people played it to give it longevity. For the most part, people use games like it is fastfood, moving from title to title, without fully diving into them. As soon as they even think they might get bored, they usually quit the game, which I think is a very unhealthy thing for both those gamers and the gaming scene as a whole. I can understand that a streamer or content creator that plays a title for 40+ hours a week as a job might get bored, but for regular people that play a few hours a day at most, I would think it is way too quickly. Titles like Fortnite, League of Legends, or better yet: Path of Exile or Warframe are still alive today because players play them consistantly and/or keep coming back after short periods of inactivity. Then again, I don't see why Palworld would still not be a title that comes back from this player falloff and slowly grind back into a title that might exist for years. They have made more than enough money to be able to support it and build it out into a more complete and better game, to slowly gain new players and have the longevity that some of these other titles have. I know at the very least PoE started out incredibly small and niche and Warframe lost most of it's player base in early access as well, with a dev team that didn't even have a publisher and went for the risky move of self-publishing. Look at where they are now, still one of the top played MMO titles in the industry and still showing strong numbers, having made peak player counts, just like PoE. Both games exist for 11 and 10 years respectively.

“Dead” only matters when the game is built around a focus of online gameplay. 1: pal world devs didn’t just encourage people to play other games, they said “enjoy other games and if an update we come out with catches your eye we welcome you back” basically. 2: palworld is fun by yourself, most people play single player or coop with some friends so it being “dead” doesn’t really hold any weight lol

The community surrounding a game does impact it imo, more than just a cool factor. It feels more alive, there's more competition. Those are legitimate aspects of gameplay in my opinion. Like genuine additions to any game, beyond a mere "cool" factor. Beyond that, if there aren't many people playing it, that's usually for a reason. So it tells people that there's probably a reason people aren't playing it. So it's not so much that it's uncool, it's that people assume it just won't be fun. Same deal when the game was wildly successful, people probably bought into it strictly because they saw 2million concurrents. They assumed oh hey, this must be fun if that many people are playing it. But yeah, the social thing is a serious aspect and I don't think that's isolated to just young kids. I'm in my 30s, and a game having a community, regulars, and all that means a lot to me. Getting to know people in game means something. It's one of the reasons World of Warcraft was so successful back in the day, and I believe one of the reasons it ended up falling off. Guilds aren't Guilds anymore, haven't been for a long time. The game outdesigned guilds being relevant. Now the game feels soulless and empty, even with a server full of people.

@@thephilosopher7173 Who cares what views something gets? Popularity isn't the determining factor at this point, it's argument that a single player game or a game that has single player cannot be dead. You and anyone else at any point can pick it up and play it like you did 5-10-15 years ago. A game that does not require others cannot be dead because it was never alive. If it has/had multiplayer, sure that can be dead, but if there is single player, it just isn't dead. It doesn't apply here. That's the issue the video and the OP and others are pointing out. A movie is not dead. A book is not dead. They are products to be used when and as you see fit. There is no dead or alive. It just is my dude. Explain to me how views on a video about this thing means it's dead? No one cares if some creator made some stupid video, if someone wants to go back and play AC2 they just can. At any point. Live service games and multiplayer servers are the only things that can be dead in this context. You or most people not caring doesn't mean its dead because it doesn't require you to care about it for it to exist and be enjoyed by others.

Just like in nature, where old plants and animals die and become food for newer plants and animals, the games that die off will provide a basis to work from for newer titles. You can learn and adapt the stuff that worked and discard the mistakes and improve the title in every way. Sometimes this is hard, as especially having newer versions of titles is often not the way to go. Having a million iterations of Assassin's Creed gets old at some point and will result in stale games, but some of the things learned from the franchise can also be used in completely new titles to improve them.

I generally prefer to play single player offline games, if they have the option to play multiplayer online better, but if they don’t have a single player offline option i usually don’t play them. I prefer this games because for me is like having a book, movie or table top game, they are there for me to play, watch or read when i need them. So, for me, my games never “die” they are just on the shelf or inside my devices (not including the games that i played and didn’t enjoy).

Games as Service (GAS), Live Service Games (LSG), 1) Dangle the carrot for minimal reward, 2) Convince you you're on a journey, but really you're on a treadmill with no real destination, 3) The better the GAS, LSG the more of a "Gilded Cage" you're in, you're actually a prisoner, but you think you're free and on a journey, but in reality you're in a workhouse on a treadmill. 4) GAS and LSGs are very similar to Plato's Cave, when you're on the inside you think that it's all good, the greatest thing since Deus Ex (lol), but really you're trapped in an illusion, when you get out and touch grass, play other games, go for a walk with a friend, paint your house, clean your house (lol), cook good food, and then you go back and tell those that are still stuck in the GAS/LSG you played with that they're really in an illusory nightmare, they will turn all toxic on you, they don't want to hear that "game bad" life outside of game good. 5) I saw in Asmon's reaction to this video something interesting, he put Plato's Cave in a simple diagram and I call it 'Asmon's Box Theory of FOMO,' it explains how FOMO traps you in a game, but also if you leave the game, then how FOMO also makes it hard to get back into the game, looking at you Destiny 2. How does it make it hard to get back in to the game? Well, you know you have missed out on a lot of stuff and others in the game have well and truly progressed beyond where you're at, so you know the grind to get to where they are now is going to be daunting, so you decide not to play the game. lol. Anyway, these are my rough thought on it all. Plus, I see a major problem with GAS/LSG games going forward as more people leave them, touch grass, feel the wind in their hair and wake up to how these games are full of traps the devs are maliciously laying for you to stay in the game.

It's so basic. Live service vs single player. One can be a dead or not dead game, one can't. The metric for single player games isn't "dead or alive", it's was it successful or a failure, ie, did it meet its sales goals and make money or did it fail to? Whether or not the 1,000,000 people who bought a single player game a year ago are still playing it or not has absolutely no bearing on how much money the developers made from that game. You know what Palworld did wrong? They didn't build a cult following around their game. One very powerful marketing route they could've taken was to strategically release an anime cinematic alongside established characters/thirst traps to build a cult fanbase for those said characters. Not only would that attract alot of 'thirsty' gamers, but would also allow for people to be invested in the story and characters, theorize lore, make fan arts of the character, alongside other 'material'. They should've done what Mihoyo, Genshin Impact developers have done in terms of prolonged marketing strategy.

I think this is incredibly simple. Why did it not matter before? Well because it did not effect your enjoyment of the game. You could still play it, but the multiplayer aspect of the game might be less populated. Versus now, you might not even be able to start the game. When games "die" these days it usually bricks the game or removes large parts of it. So objectively the gaming experience is worse or inaccessible altogether even when owning a physical copy of the game. I think the practice of bricking products intentionally should be highly illegal.

Nowadays online stores have unlimited copies to sell, software houses know this and make sure to plan a "long tail" even in the sale of single players. There are many ways to assist this "long tail" and bring back hype about a product: put it at a discounted price, release dlc, or make TV series, films and anime to get people talking about the IP again

This is why FF14 and RuneScape are both such widely popular boomer-live-services. The vast majority of players, in both games, do not play to grind endgame activities. They play to consume the vast swaths of unique gameplay mechanics, questing, story, and socialization. Neither game has a barrier of FOMO, nor do they have any threat of significant content deletion. They are played in the same way someone plays a single-player standalone game.

You are absolutely correct with that FOMO 17:17 I'm experiencing that right now. I started to play Genshin in like 1.4, stopped playing for almost 2 years due to burn out. I got back in because of friends in the second half of 4.4 and played it nearly every day since, but I'm getting to that burn out point again. I missed yesterday because I had to work the next day and had so many days of poor sleep. It is so much easier to quit once you miss one day. For those wanting to quit Genshin or a similar FOMO game, tell yourself to take one or 2 days off and then ask yourself how you feel. Doesn't mean you'll never play it again, but it'll remind you that you survived for many years before you started playing whatever game has you currently imprisoned. You can survive for many years without the game in the future. And it doesn't mean you can't ever play again. It will just remind you of your autonomy. Edit: When I started playing, I only had maybe 5 months of Genshin to catch up on, but now I have +2 years of catch up and I am more of a casual, do my dailies, maybe spend my resin, maybe get distracted, then get off, type player. I find whenever I play Genshin, I fall into the FOMO pattern where its all stress over artificial deadlines (limited time events) and not much enjoyment of the actual game. If they just made things less rushed, with permanent events like Honkai, it would alleviate a lot of peoples' stress. There wouldn't be as much punishment for not giving your soul to Mihoyo.

a major problem with Rust is that you can't ever save your progress, there's no single player option and every server has to wipe up to once every month. I'd play it endlessly if i could have my own single player world i can save progress in and mod.

I thought that FOMO drawing was gonna be the usual "this adds nothing to the analogy" but damn, it's a great visual. I'd add that that "somehow" is basically a force that pushes you a squeezes you out of the box. On the other hand, if any force tries to push you into the box, you can just go around the box.

It should be normal to differentiate between a game "dying" and "ending". A game can't "die" if it was never built to "live"(-service). It simply ends when it's over.

They just need to put good gameplay and cute/hot girls, and the game will sell. It's that easy, they just need to fire all woke bastards from their company or shut them down, and put people whom actually want to make a game instead of a propaganda piece for their ideology and to get brony points on X. Heck, they could even make a game about fuckin' communism, a literal playable biography of Lenin himself set in Russia about his rise to power, and if the gameplay is good and there are cute Russian girls, the game will sell!

that guy is SO wrong to why Larian isnt making any more BG games. It isnt "for the player" or to not make the players play only 1 game, they were too stressed making the 1st one fit to D&D rules. simple as that. it was development burn out, otherwise wise they WOULD have made DLC or BG4
@SweetLuups
@SweetLuups 25 дней назад
Larian moving away from baldurs gate is the smartest business move they could possibly make. Theyve been in the industry for a long time and didnt really break out until DoS2. Now with how explosive bg3 was everyone knows Larian and their quality. Back to their own IP they go. I wouldnt be surprised if Larian makes huge waves in the next 10-15 years

Look, the problem with "games dying" is that it forces us to ride the "hype train," and if we don't, you miss out on ever enjoying the game at its peak.

Recently I had the opportunity to attend a meeting with game studio looking for additional funding for their upcoming game. The only reason I was invited to join in was that I'm the only person in my company who plays video games and follows video game/tech news while no one else had a clue about the industry. As soon as my boss found out that the game product's main source of revenue is the pay once to play model with no consistent monetization for the coming years, he pretty much nope the fuck out. Like what Asmongold said, my boss explained that why should him as an investor, doesn't matter how good the product is, invest so much money in a project that take years to complete just to see his ROI once and whatever is earned will likely be reinvest back into the game for additional content or another new project that would take more time to develop, and that's IF you do get sales. Oh and he didn't like that Steam/PS/Xbox platform and publishers get huge cut out of the sales. For anyone curious about what game it was. It's Project Survival (I can't reveal the finalized title) published by Shueisha. A open world anime-style survival crafting adventure game. It's literally Ark Survival with Genshin visuals. I've seen the current build of the game behind closed doors. Looks so much better and polished than the concept trailer from 1 year ago. Not sure what else i can say without jeopardizing the game development despite not signing any NDA. Do expect to see hololive Vtubers contracted to play this game since it's Shueisha publishing. Personally I do think this game project has potential to be the next Craftopia (Palworld's previous project).

The problem is that "Game is dead" is used as such a drama statement. It is a consumer market. Once we are done consuming one thing we move on like a horde of locusts. It is a cycle which helps keep the products refreshing. The more the market tries to stick with one game and beat the dead horse the more the quality of the market will decline.

Palworld having almost all settings adjustable is something other grinding games would benefit from massively.

It's crazy to think there are a huge number of gamers, who have never experienced games before live service model. That before live service games, you played a game for much much longer in "state" with no updates or DLC. This is just a return to that era.
