despite the creepo vibes you felt, i think it's kinda sweet that someone took the time to still decorate the xmas tree! seems like someone cared still and liked doing it and that's rather lovely
Don't feel so sad, y'all. It turns out that that person (or people) who decorated the tree decorated it not only for themselves to see, but also for Dan and the 100k+ viewers that have watched this video. Not every dead mall Christmas tree gets that kind of exposure.
I know he's just doing his job, but who else has an interest in this mall at this point? And yet he's so indigiant to the offense againist the mall's privacy. It's like he's the incarnate of all the "elderly cashier at the last store in the whole mall" come to huant Dan for all the footage he's taken over the last decade or so.
When I was little, in the mid to late 2000s, my Dad would take my little brother and I to the Global Mall, then called the Hickory Hollow Mall. We would play games in the arcade there, which - in hindsight - was a clear holdover from the 80s. We would eat food and play on the plastic playground in the center of the food court. We even made up some silly tradition of running up and jumping off this little cement ramp outside the Sears. And in those days, the place was consistently packed with people. To viewers it may seem like it was just another mall, but for us it was a wondrous place. Then when my parents divorced, we weren't really around my Dad enough to be able to go there anymore. At about the same time it started transitioning into Global Mall. By the time I got back there, it was almost unrecognizable (as shown in the video.) Still, I wasn't old enough then to really feel nostalgia for those very early days when we used to go, so I didn't appreciate the opportunity I had. Now, it's too late. The place is closed for good. So thank you Dan Bell, for helping me remember those better times. I never thought I would be able to see the place again, but now there will always be this video, at least.
Yes being as young as you are you certainly missed the Hey dey of the shopping Mall. I remember them as a kid back in the 80s & 90s the places would be rammed wall to wall, no spaces in the car parks and around Christmas, Thanks Giving etc it was Ridiculous. But those were years way before the internet, never mind online shopping, EBay & Amazon etc. Sad to see these relics from yesteryear so dead and empty.
Sorry to hear about your parents. I have separated parents too so l understand how it feels to remember those days when we had fun weekends at our favorite malls. 😪
At the Global Mall, when you're showing the Christmas tree and said that there's no one around I was like "Wait, no there's someone!" and then realized it was just a mannequin lol
Dan i absolutely love how you switch from upbeat young 80s to straight out monotone and depressing, its like a rollercoaster going up and then ramming into a wall.
I put this on sometimes when I'm not able to calm my mind down and I want to just relax enough to fall asleep and it always works to bring me down to a more serene state. This series is so wonderful and weirdly soothing--Dan is a gem.
"OH MY GAWWWD JACKIE!" Seriously though, great to see you back Dan; I love just how off-kilter this series is, the oddball footage from TV feels so perfectly in keeping with the dying Americana of the malls.
Yeh same here. Remember how busy Malls used to be as kids? We’d catch the bus to the Mall on a Saturday. We’d have no money apart from our bus fair, but just to walk round and do basically nothing. Especially if the weather was crap outside and raining😂
My first job was at this mall. Lots of good late 90s early 2000s memories here. My favorite urban explorer at my old mall. Love it! Hope you're doing well!
Dan I used to watch these at night when I was getting sober, a family me member suddenly died and couldn’t relax. Thank you so much for helping me through that hard time in my life.
After watching Harley Quinn, I've been thinking again about buying an abandoned mall and remaking it into a housing development. I think it would be really cool to rent an apartment in a former mall.
Dan does the best job with any dead mall videos on RU-vid. He lets us take in the scenery instead of talking non-stop like he's rapidly reading a lengthy Wikipedia page about the mall while walking through its corridors. He shares enough history for us to get the whole picture, and his camera lets us soak in how lifeless these places are.
This is what I was needing man. Been feeling just very empty and emotionless, not really in depression kind of way or anything deeply intense. I'm just in this rut where my mood is in a permanent state of being a flat line. Nothing interests me, everything bores me to death, constant anxiousness about seemingly nothing. Been a shitty week man, so I'm glad there's finally something mellow and atmospheric to watch for a while.
Keep your head up man. We’re all blessed in this world.. take a step back and appreciate all the blessings you have been given.. even if you feel you’re not “blessed” with anything you’re not taking a far enough step back.. you’ve got this
this series gives me the closest experience to hugging the actual mall-soft aesthetic, I want to hug and absorb the vibes from malls while they're still here
Yes, while I have always detested the Mall, it was also a large part of the 70's-90's and being 51 now it definatley took me back to walking with old girlfreinds while they shopped, going Christmas shopping or going to a movie. Strong feelings, indeed.
it feels a whole lot more innocent, at least it feels that way. vapid, like the barbie twins themselves. but sometimes you want the fake plastic, pleasant experience. they used to keep them clean and you had a presumption of safety. real funny when you realize the history of malls, how the man who came up with the concept would have been horrified at the consumerist centric vision of the mall of yesteryear. and now we're kind of watching those who survive falling more in line with something closer to his vision of the space. everything is a flat circle, ect.
The store you were thinking was Macy’s was indeed a Macy’s. At opening, however, it was either Castner-Knott or Harvey’s, both local department stores that were later bought out by the parent company of Macy’s.
I always find the ones that have turned into pseudo-community centers neat. Kind of a neat way to repurpose older one-level malls from the 70's and 80's.
@@wintersmelody yeh we have a old mall by us that’s been converted into community centres. Although the Mall is only around 50% full it’s certainly brought it back to life. As long as the soccer mums keep going to their Zumba classes and the pensioners keep going to their well fit classes it’ll stay open for now.
You're INTROS😂💣💥 Zooming in the one "Barbie twin's eye" LOLOL🤣 .....awwww they still put up the 🎄Christmas tree😥 I have to say that first place did seem REALLY creepy!😬
Hey Dan, I've been following your channel for a few years now and I wanted to express how much I love your content. Keep up the good work and don't let the depression stop you from doing what you do best. I have persistent depressive disorder(dysthymia) which I've had for YEARS and I feel for you on a personal level. I'm hyped that your still making the deadmall series! Keep up the good work brother😊 P.S. I've binged your deadmall series multiple times already lol
Love the 80's intros to each mall. The music is so dreary, makes the mall that much more exciting, lol. Great job on these 2 malls. We have a dying mall here in Prescott, Az. 2 anchors have left. JC Penney and Sears. I'll have to go in and see who's left. Haven't been in the Gateway Mall in over a year. I'll do some research on it first and see what i can find out about it. Thanks Dan for this, it was great.
I remember the old Hickory Hollow Mall from the mid 80's when we lived near Nashville. I knew it was closed but I had no idea it had become something else. Very sad to see it abandoned like this. I think 80s and 90s kids were the last of the mall generation. Malls are becoming a thing of the past.
I loved your Dead Mall series since I seen it for the very first time, I like how there is dated old mall music in the background, or when you stumble across some Totally 80's advertisements, or play old commercials from the time of it's opening, there are other people who TRY to do malls like you,..buit NO ONE can do it exactly like you Dan. 👍
Glad you're back! Any chance of a "Living Mall Series" of vintage footage for the Christmas season? I miss some of the feelings of malls in the 90's during Christmas as a kid. Be kind to your human!
I LOVED this mall when it was Hickory Hollow. It was my favorite mall in Nashville. It was packed on the weekdays and weekends. I used to work at Game Stop there and started to notice things declining in the mid 00s. Very sad to watch.
Yo as I’m watching this-that bathroom scene had me craaacking up! The pictures of the toilets in a food court. And then the camera! Wrong on every level
@@joelaw13 I mean, after (briefly) working as a janitor for a mall, I hate the people who seemingly deliberatly toss TP around but putting that warning with pictures on the wall makes me want to the story. You don't put that sign up without some crazy story right? Like the town has a colony of secert TP vandals refining there wasteful techinqes. Or that "Crazy old man" Who ruinied the whole room.
Outside “malls” are replacing these. I’ve seen stores normally seen in regular malls only to see them leave and relocating to these type of settings. There’s so much money invested in these old malls that i would have to assume is the reason why these remain open. A Mexican company have been sweeping these up and catering to a new type of customer
Outside malls have been taking over since the '90s. I grew up in Irvine, California, and when the outdoor Irvine Spectrum Center opened in 1995, it killed the nearby indoor Laguna Hills Mall almost overnight. Likewise, The City Mall in Orange, CA was almost totally dead until they replaced it with the outdoor Orange Block.
@Don't Take It Personal I've been to that location 3-4 X in 2020 to 2022. There are a few name brand retail that have shut down. 🏚 There is tourism and 95 traffic in the area, but Covid19, staffing might have lowered the sales, revenue. 🛒
Dan, I've had a weird, long day, and it's been a weird time in my life. This made me feel so much better. These Dead Mall videos are like comfort food. So excited to see another one.
Our soul brother is back on the, in the, air waves, light waves, photons, wavicles... pausing before I start, making a coffee and averting my eyes from the cookie jar as I head back to enjoy this in a few minutes.
How dare they tell you can’t film haha the king of dead malls it won’t be scared easily. Thanks for coming back here on RU-vid, hopefully this is the first of many new videos. I take it also as a sign you’re doing ok, so happy for that! Thank you again, Dan. Take care!
Because of you we get to see the beautiful Christmas tree. I’m so glad my Arrowhead mall in Glendale, AZ. Is alive on life support. So many people moving into Phoenix. Homes are out of sight and apartments. This is really surreal to see. Damn social media.
I can't tell if this is an old video... new video... past... present... future... such a weird brain melting feeling you get watching these videos and being in dead malls. I mean that in the best way possible.
Omg. I never realized that i stopped watching your dead mall series. I was binging your vids about two years ago. Glad RU-vid put you back on my recommended :)
Yaayy! So awesome to see this tonight. Been rooting and praying for you Dan. As my mom would say "Keep on Keeping on." Your videos are first class but above all we appreciate you.
So I am a Nascar fan. I went and visited the museum and the two old men were on race teams and friends with a driver named Ray Fox from what I remember. We had to actually call to have one of them come in to open it for us. It was pretty cool to just get racing stories and have them answer questions only they could. And what was really wild is that he opened the door to the David Pearson Greyhound car for me and I sat in it to take pictures. When I was here, I definitely had the dead mall series in mind, but never thought it would be cemented and showcased. Lol stumbling into the mall for the museum was definitely off the beaten path.
Hey Dan! Glad you're feeling better man. Looking forward to this one! You're one of my favorite content creators on RU-vid. If it weren't for your channel I would have never found urban exploration or any of those types of channels (seriously, you were the first channel I ever picked up, I recall the late evenings in summer, binge watching your content and being creeped out at the places you would explore, ahh, good memories) All the stuff you put out is so entertaining to watch and I'm glad you feel well enough to share with all of us again. Stay strong Dan, you are loved and appreciated. ------------- Also wanted to add this to my comment, but I remember when you came to my city and went inside of Rolling Acres Mall. I remember my friend told me about it then I had read about it in my local paper. I've been inside that mall before back when it wasn't completely destroyed and taken over by nature. It's now completely demolished and a giant Amazon center takes up the entirety of that space. Every building that was around that mall has been demolished and a massive Amazon warehouse is in its place. You really did capture a piece of history, history of my town and where I grew up, it's all we have of that place now. The Dead Mall Series is so great!
Awesome to see some more new Dead Mall content Dan , sad to see what some of these malls have become now , sure its easier to buy anything at a click of a mouse now but something feels cold about it , was a experience to go to a mall back in the day and to talk to someone about a product before you bought it in person . Then maybe go look at other shops and grab something at the food court .
I worked in that mall in 1985. Back then it was a bustling place. On Saturdays it was so crowded you could barely walk. Just thousands and thousands of people. There were three multiplex cinemas and dozens of restaurants nearby as well. It died off fast about 2000.
About 15 years ago I drove 400 miles to this mall in TN to get a graphics card for my computer. Was the only place within 1000 miles that had the graphics card I needed. Sad to see it go.
So, are the sponsors what make this possible? Or the Patreon. Because I just do urban exploration for fun. After my job. As a social worker helping others. Don't get depressed, Dan! I am mostly kidding. I just hate this obvious bubble economy RU-vid and OnlyFans created. I was in a car accident where I had 275 stitches in my face alone, brain damage. Can't let these things destroy your motivation. Only you can motivate you. Remember, if you don't go give that Bengali mall cop the business, who will? That man is an actual menace.
I grew up in the 90s and early 00s going to Global Mall (known as Hickory Hollow Mall then). It used to be a great and lively mall, but at some point crime in Antioch started to rise (including some murders very close by, if I remember correctly) and people began avoiding the area like the plague.
@@mercurymist9240 it does! It is currently an AMC 8 theater location. The exterior is pretty much the exact same since its Carmike days in the 90s. But it's still kicking after all these years!
That Global Mall reminds me of my childhood mall, Echelon Mall in NJ (now Voorhees Town Center). They spent a metric ton of money renovating the place and making it a “lifestyle center” only for it to stay dead 15 years later… Glad the new owner of Global Mall at least realizes that it will never be a mall again.
Oh wow! This was my childhood mall. This used to be known as the Hickory Hollow Mall. Adam the Woo also did a vlog from here about 7 or 8 years ago. So many good times and memories here. Thanks for covering this place, Dan.👍👍
