Tom when will you review "Port Royal" from Pegasus. (reprint of "Haendler der Karibik")? That is another great pirate themed push your luck card game that was really popular in germany in 2014.
I can't speak for the physical game but the digital version is fun. :) I agree that the character powers might not be balanced but I'm not sure it's as unbalanced as Tom implied, and having those powers does add a lot of extra variety in the digital version.
Clarifications: Regarding the kraken, extra cards you play via the sword, hook, etc count toward the forced 2-card draw/play. The cannon just discards (not plays) a card of another player. Carl, at least on iOS, the mermaids have no special ability. Maybe there is an extra power that grants you an ability that you are thinking of. This game is a fantastic, light filler that makes push-your-luck meaningful.
Neither. I prefer the old information dialogue box. It's too busy with spinning things going in multiple directions; it might be okay if they all spun the same way.
Carl: You're both right and wrong. They included both the ability to play with that special power that you describe, *as well as* the 8 and 9 of Mermaids to play the way the app had (where Mermaids are a suit that are 4-9 instead of 2-7).
