A whole hour of dead testing and form filling in part two of our three-part series. Yes, it is as exciting as it sounds. This follows our unboxing video. Before you comment though, a ranty disclaimer if you will:
It’s important to recognise this video for what it is, and what it is is simply two house-bashers shooting the breeze familiarising themselves with the TIS MFT-Eco tester while undertaking the everyday tests used out in the world.
What this video is not:
A classroom teaching aid.
A definitive testing guide.
Guaranteed correct, complete and error-free.
Devoid of gutter utterances.
A way to improve your sexual prowess.
Yes, it’s long, it’s boring and it contains colourful language, but that’s because it’s informal - it was just Amy and me on the day recording our procedures, thoughts and observations off-script while we rattled through testing as the camera rolled and with a really crappy microphone setup that'll set your teeth on edge. Anyone expecting more or different is advised to look at the Sparky Ninja, e5, John Ward and eFixx channels, among others, for better informed and classroom-friendlier content.
For those who say “I wanted my son/daughter to see this video but you ruined it with your bad language”, rest assured that if your son/daughter is old enough to understand electrical testing then they’ve probably already forgotten more rude words than you’ll ever know. If your son/daughter is getting into the trades, they won’t last long if salty speech sends them sobbing to their safe space. If the presentation of this video isn’t for you, then it isn’t for you. Nobody ever guaranteed otherwise.
I’m sorry to sound so defensive, but you literally can’t put anything on the likes of RU-vid without someone moaning about it not meeting their specific expectations like I was supposed to have them personally in mind while making it. Videos like this really attract the whining pricks too as they want the information but are never happy about how it’s handed over. Here’s an idea for anyone who doesn’t like it: go read the books and do your own research; you don't need us to lay it on a plate for you.

I love the way you explain problems in real world situations that learners like myself can actually understand rather than trying to interpret text books. My method of "auto test" is to lock on the insulation resistance test and go through all the combinations. Speeds things up no end. Sadly you can't do the same with continuity on my Metrel (I think you can on a Megger). On IR testing, the testers are limited to a bit over 1mA. So even if there's a load across line and neutral you're not going to be powering it with 500V as the power will be limited to about 0.5W at 500V.

Great video.. Useful refresher and for newbies alike 😎👌I had a customer call me out her boiler kept tripping the rcd, it was a N on the wrong split load N rail. Some registered company did that after moving a CU to fit a lift in a garage... Always ask if any work has been carried out, saves time and head scratching.

Rings have advantages and disadvantages, radials also have advantages and disadvantages my house/workshop is a mix of both and has three separate consumer units I'd love to be able to see the face on any spark that has to work on it after I'm dead and someone else lives there. Only faults I've had in about 30 years is a slug that got into a light fitting, a corroded immersion heater and a loose connection on the DNO fuse.

Hi Niall. I may do so, it's no skin off my nose. The only ballache with Excel is that it changes formatting depending on your font set and printer and when IET alter things, it's a pain to add new columns and stuff. I'll put it on my website in the coming days though if you think it's of use.

Great video! I'm not even an electrician, but I could watch you explain these things for hours. Also loving the disclaimer. Up to par with the one used by Alcorn McBride in their manuals: Congratulations! You have purchased an extremely fine Product that would give you thousands of years of trouble-free service, except that you undoubtedly will destroy it via some typical bonehead consumer maneuver. Which is why we ask you to: Please for God's sake read this owner's manual carefully before you unpack the Product. You already unpacked it, didn't you? You unpacked it and plugged it in and turned it on and fiddled with the knobs, and now your child, the same child who once shoved a polish sausage into your video cassette recorder and set it on "fast forward", this child also is fiddling with the knobs, right? We might as well just break these Products right at the factory before we ship them out, you know that?!? We're sorry. We just get a little crazy sometimes because we're always getting back "defective" merchandise where it turns out that the consumer inadvertently bathed the Product in acid for six days. So, in writing these instructions, we naturally tend to assume that your skull is filled with dead insects, but we mean nothing by it. OK?

@dsesuk
@dsesuk 2 года назад
If the end-to-ends are okay then it may be down to a number of things, the obvious on the wiring being the socket under test is spurred from the ring rather than sitting on it or there's a figure-eight in the ring wiring. Outside of that, variations are usually down to the accessory itself not giving the greatest contact from the front because of dirt ingress, wear or otherwise imperfect contact between the pin and receptacle. You may find a more consistent number is given from the terminals on the rear, although if a socket has a high resistance from the front due to age or ingress then you want to know about it. At such low resistances, it doesn't take much to knock the number out. I wouldn't expect it to be out too wildly though, and often a bit of socket wiggling can make a big difference.

I had it recently with an rcd tripping when anything was plugged in on a ring final socket circuit, the consumer unit had been changed recently by other contractors on a recent void property, a Dual bs 610008 rcd Hager with bs60947-3 main switch. The fault was the incorrect neutral connection rail/connection block had been used for the neutral conductors, I.e the incoming neutral supply to the rcd rather than the load side.
@dsesuk
@dsesuk 2 года назад
I guess no testing or handover paperwork was provided for that then Paul?
@paultipton743
@paultipton743 2 года назад
@@dsesuk yes it was and with a sticker on the consumer unit, I had to go back after the new tenant moved in to investigate. Its a simple mistake I know especially if one a dead line. Consumer unit was drilled through the back with 2 large holesaw holes no grommet strip or fire sealant for cable entry a mounted on wooden battons, The company are sub contractors we used for testing and inspecting the void properties and mutual exchanges for housing association, it was reported back to the office. Its possible it may of been dead tested only as the property was empty when the consumer unit was fitted, the rcd certainly didn't hold in when I tested zs at the socket outlets until I altered the neutral connections in the consumer unit.
