We have been struggling keeping our flat towed vehicle battery from being drained while driving from place to place. In this video we install a charge line kit to charge the towed vehicle using the RV as our power source. We also install a diode kit to resolve an issue with the charge line backfeeding to the rest of the electrical system.
*******
When RVing, there are some travel days that are long. Do you know what makes the day longer? When we pull up to a campsite, and the battery to our towed vehicle (a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk) is dead. Our first temporary fix was to buy a portable battery charger. In this video, we share our permanent fix, which was install a charge line between the RV and the Jeep. The charge line basically charges the towed vehicle battery using power from the RV.
Unfortunately, our charge line fix resulted in another big problem: the breaking system on our towed vehicle (the Roadmaster Invisibrake system) was engaging when it should not. After Kasie conducted some research and troubleshooting tests, we believe that was because current was backfeeding to the Invisibrake system from the Jeep battery itself. To solve that issue, Kasie installed a diode. Confused? We’ll explain more and provide the details in this video.

Something is draining my car battery and yes I’ve got a trickle charger installed in car. A mechanic mentioned fuses. Where would this be? I’ve got a 6way plug.

I would try to check your owner's manual for fuse locations. Good luck, and I hope you get the problem resolved.

Great job ladies! I have a couple of small comments. Electrical tape rarely stays put for long unless you're using the factory stuff. Something I do is add a small zip tie on top of the tape to keep it from coming loose. Also. do yourself a HUGE favor, and solder every crimp connection, they will fail and then troubleshooting fun begins. I hate crimp connectors! They're good for a proof of concept, but then I go back and hardware them. Even factory ones fail. They are also more susceptible to corrosion, which leads to failure. Keep up the good work.

Those are GREAT suggestions! We don't own the Jeep anymore (nothing to do with the battery issue), but I'm so glad you commented in case anyone else has the issue. (PS: zip ties rock!)

We are just having the same problem, but never before when we were towing our jeep, and earlier we bought a battery jump starter, since we had to use the RV to jump start the jeep the last 2 days.

Thank you, that was a great idea to add the park light diode, did you have a solution to eliminate pulling the fuse for invisibrake controller,
@ClassCBroads

Pulling the fuse was just a temporary solution until we added the park light diode, which eliminated the backfeed. So once we added the diode, that fixed the invisibrake issue.

We have this problem. We tow a 2010 Chevy Equinox 4 down. The RV is a 2021 Fleetwood Flair 29M class A. The tow vehicle is set up for towing when we towed with a class C. We follow the car manual as to what to do prior to towing. The battery does go dead. Per Fleetwood the RV is set with a charge line.

We’re looking at “your” exact braking system. Did you install it also? Thanks for the video 👍🏽

We had e-Trailer near St. Louis install ours. They actually made a video of our install and here is the link: www.etrailer.com/tv-install-roadmaster-invisabrake-2019-jeep-cherokee-rm-8700.aspx

There’s no way that new charge wire should have caused that issue unless the problem was in the 6 pin connector itself on the front of your Jeep. Some how that 12v was making its way into the other pin or pins. Anywho great video.

We aren't experts, but all I know is that the diode fixed the problem for us. Thanks for chiming in on perhaps another thing to check.

“Charge line kit” 6 feet of wire, a fuse, zip ties and a few crimp connectors. $40. 🙄

We get it....probably could have done it cheaper.
