I live in Maine. I make my own mix of Bonsia soil with the soil that I have. I find that my soil drains well and that my azalea tree love it. While I do buy bonsia soil I find that mixing the two together is a great benefit. While my Azalea Tree is blooming now I expect to cut it back after the tree ends it's bloom season. Your very correct about the need to cut your Azalea. It seems the more you abuse your tree the bigger the rewards next growing season. Best of luck. Live happy and be at peace.

I have an azalea and a rhododendron growing outside (not as bonsai) in six to eight inch high mounds of shredded oak leaf compost on top of native clay soil with a bit of sand mixed with the clay, and both plants are doing well. It's rather difficult to get rhododendrons to grow in our heavy clay mostly neutral ph soil, so most of the time it's recommended to mix in around 50% or more sphagnum peat. The shredded oak leaves (mostly post oak) were an experiment, and it seems to have worked, though the rhodo struggled at first while the azalea acted like it was no big deal.

I love your videos there so educational and helpfull. I learned so much from you and I'm going to try to start my own bansai trees from seeds. I have red maple or fire maple and I have Japanese white pine seeds. But I'm afraid I'm not going to do something right and they wont grow. I want to do single trees of both but I also want to make a forest from them too. I know you may not read this but I could use a little help and I guess encouragement to start them. All I have right now is just regular potting soil and I keep hearing stuff about planting seeds in some kind of moss to start them. And also putting them in a sealed container or bag and sticking them in the refrigerator for 60 to 90 days. I dont know if that is just for the maple seeds or if it's also for the Japanese white pine seeds too. If I can get some assistance from you or one of your subscribers. Thank you and I'm sorry for how long this was but I'm soooo interested in doing this. Ive always wanted to do bansai. It's so peaceful and comforting that you can manipulate the growth of a tree,bush,flower,ect.

I re watched this video, and whilst Peter's advice is correct, never ever leave black roots in the re potting process, it accelerates root rot, which crawls up and brings on very nasty root/crown rots, remove ALL black roots both above and below soil level.I'm sure Peter would also recommend this. Re: we can prune back large branches when the plant 'reverts' it goes back to its parent plant colour ie; all white, then to regain the multi colour on that branch we must prune the entire branch off and re grow it. Always seal large cuts with cut paste, to stop bacteria entering the sawn limb.

Wow, the roots of the big one was great to see, never seen them before. This might be a long shot but i have to try: I bought a quite big dwarf cherry ( Kojou-no-mai) yesterday. I could not check the roots in the nursery but i looked really healthy and it was. When i finally got i out it was just rounds and rounds of roots. Can barely see the soil throgh the roots. I know that its the wrong time of the year to repot it but im afraid that it wont make it throug the winter in the nursery pot. Any tips? Thankfull for all the great videos you make Peter Greatings from the south of Sweden!

Purchased a pre bonsai Chinese elm which I planned on growing indoors. I had no intention of repotting till spring, ,had the tree for a few days and when I went to move it I spotted some tiny white insects at the bottom of pot where it was resting. Was afraid to spread them to the rest of my trees so I decided the soil must have these bugs. I repotted and now the tree is losing all its leaves. Any suggestions? I live in Southern California. Thank you
@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 5 лет назад
Chinese Elms are best grown outdoors or if grown indoors they should be in a very cool room with lots of light.. Spray with an insecticide to get rid of the pests or use a strong jet of water from a hose. Keep it outdoors and well watered and it should bounce back.

Great video Peter. I have a very large Satsuki azalea grown in Japan and very similar to the one in your video. I have had it now for about 6 years and it never has flowered. The person i got it from let it go to me as it never flowered for him either. It is potted in the Kanuma mixture and is very healthy. All of my other azaleas flower each year in my care. Do you have any insight on how to get this plant to flower? Love your videos.

Where you live is similar to UK or central Japan. Feb repotting is early Spring repotting which is what we do with most of our deciduous bonsai. In Japan they repot in mid June and July when their rainy season begins. OK but not ideal in cool temperate climes like ours.
