The Blue Ring Octopus is notoriously the most deadly animal on the planet due to its extremely venomous bite. Just one chomp contains enough venom to kill over 20 people!
In this video Mark Vins will attempt to touch this creature to prove the blue ring octopus can only harm you if bitten...or so he thinks.
Will he survive this daring encounter? You’re about to find out!

I had one as a pet in 2011. Local pet store received it in a shipment of live rocks. They didn't know what to do with it so they sold it to me. They are extremely smart. It recognized me and would turn white whenever it saw me. My sister, on the other hand, it flashed its colors at her on sight. It hated that she would tap the glass.

Before my first trip to Australia many years ago, I studied up on the deadly creatures there…and then I decided that going to the beach was a bad idea. Walking around in nature seemed like a bad idea, too. Even having a hotel room on the ground floor seemed like a bad idea. One day, we were walking along a sidewalk on Sydney Harbour and we saw the most gigantic box jellyfish I’d ever seen swimming along near the surface. I know the really big ones aren’t the deadliest ones, but it still made me secure in my decision to stay out of the water entirely.
@ChrisM-bn5vr
@ChrisM-bn5vr 8 месяцев назад
The venomous box jellyfish are native to Queensland in Northern Australia not South Eastern Australia, if you were in Sydney that Jellyfish you saw in the water there wouldn't have posed you any risk. The water at beaches like Bondi is very safe when it comes to wildlife, the worst thing you might encounter in that water is a blue bottle which is a sting that's slightly painful for about 20 minutes, I got stung as a kid and didn't even cry for reference. The biggest risk of the water in Sydney would be the rips not the wildlife, but as long as you swim between the flags you would be fine. Also missing out on the nature in Australia because you're afraid of a snake is silly, realistically only 1-2 people a year die from snake bites. I'm 28 and have been bushwalking, camping and hiking my whole life, and I've literally only encountered wild snakes once in my entire life. Snakes like to avoid people. Also no one has died from a spider bite since 1982 and the most venomous type of spider the Funnel Web is very shy, they burrow themselves in deep holes. The other venomous verities like Red Backs would be comparable to Black Widows you get in the US, it's not something to really worry about. So yeah largely the danger of wildlife in Australia is way over-exaggerated.

I was envenomated by a blue ring octopus in northern Australia many years ago around small rock pools like these. Thing is I hadn't been bitten, I had put my hand into the water to pick up a small stick I had been using to play with the octopus, not knowing that you can be envenomated through the water though the skin! It was not serious I had difficulty breathing for maybe a couple of minutes but sure to say it was the last time I tried that. Don't put your hand into the water nearby one of these they can poison the water around them and their eggs

There's no value in touching it. At least the stings are interesting. But this is like massaging a sea snake.

So, if the blue ring octopus gets its venom from it’s surroundings, then if it’s born and raised in captivity, in a tank with clean water it won’t have any venom in its bite?

My wife and I have caught 2 of them in the tidal pools of Nusa Dua, Bali. (minus all the drama) Same procedure using dip nets and plastic container to take pics. They often actively swim looking just like a small squid. Cheers!

While this animal is indeed deadly, none of the lists I looked at have it as #1. That honor often belongs to the box jellyfish.

A few years ago I went for a muck dive, to see some octopuses. The first one we saw was a big one, hiding in a jar, and our dive guide played with it and grabbed it. Later we saw two tiny cute looking octopuses, and I started playing with one of them, touching it and putting it on my hand. I heard the guide snap his metal stick on his oxygen tank and wildly signaling me to stop. He told me after the dive it were two blue dotted octopuses

It’s interesting to me that 3 of the 4 blue ringed octopus species have overlapping ranges, with the blue lined completely overlapping with the greater blue ringed. Wonder how they came to speciate and what if any niche partitioning there is?

When I was younger (definitely old enough to know better) my cousin and I went rock pooling at this exact spot. Within maybe 15 minutes we caught 2 or 3 blue lined octopus in a glass jar wanting to watch them light up. We knew they were pretty venomous and used sticks to coax them in but looking back it was incredibly dangerous (no gloves and wearing thongs). I've told a bunch of my friends this story so it's cool to have a BW video at the exact same spot for some proof!

Man, it’s one thing to take a painful sting that it left untreated, could result from death. It’s another thing to risk taking a bite that basically could mean certain death.
