Gerald & Vera Woodman were the sister and brother-in-law of my late dear Aunt in LA whose house they had just broken the Yom Kippur fast at as seen in the film. I remember lying in bed in the late hours aged 14 in Manchester, UK (hence the name link to Manchester Products) listening to the BBC World Service as I often did being a teenage geek and hearing the reports of the murder and rushing into my parents bedroom to awaken them with the news albeit a little unsure of whether I was mistaken or not. I only met them once or twice on holiday/visits for family weddings and bar-mitzvahs etc to LA so didn't really know them but the whole event and the nature of the killings really upset me and haunted me for years despite the huge distance. People think that these things only happen to other people's families. You ARE other people's families.

Marilyn Plantz was executed by lethal injection on 5-1-2001, and her accomplice (William Bryson) was executed 6-15-2000, for the murder of Jim Plantz. What is interesting is, at their joint trial, an FBI agent impugned the work of Joyce Gilchrist, the chemist from the Oklahoma City Police Department we saw in this episode. FBI technicians studied 8 cases completed by Gilchrist for trial, and found serious errors in 75% of them....the jury found them guilty anyway and, interestingly, no appeals court ordered a new trial. I guess Gilchrist’s test results in this case held up for trial, but I saw no documentation of it. There was a whole lot of other physical evidence supporting the convictions. Nevertheless, Gilchrist was fired in 2001, and sever other convictions were overturned, including some on death row....I wonder how many innocent men were executed based on her seriously flawed evidence.
@JBell-gm5vx
@JBell-gm5vx 2 года назад
"Disgraced" Joyce Gilchrist who was nick-named "Black Magic" by "disgraced" District Attorney Bob Macy caused the execution of several innocent death row inmates, in my opinion. The Plantz case, in this documentary, is wrought with so much incorrect information. The person who welded the most blows with the baseball bat to Jim Plantz turned state's evidence and he will be released soon from prison. Bryson and Plantz are both gone, executed. While no one deserves to die the way Jim Plantz died, he was no angel. Marilyn Plantz was a victim of domestic violence for several years. She also had an IQ of 70, very border line slow. She paid the ultimate price for this crime even though her daughter begged the Ok. Pardon and Parole board to not kill her mother.

I'm confused as to why they would need a warrant to investigate the house? Wouldn't you think the dead body be probable cause to search. I mean hell if a cop says "they smell weed in my car" they don't need permission to search.
@CJ-jx4bq
@CJ-jx4bq 4 года назад
@vlogress 11c - laws change. It's an amendment to the 4th in respect to scenes of homicide: scholarlycommons.law.northwestern.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=6185&context=jclc - I'm pretty sure you can search for what's in plain view without a warrant. If permission is not given, like in the case shown, the police actually stand guard until a warrant arrives.

@Live-Life-Freely 4 года назад
@@vlogress11c81 Smelling weed indicates there's probable cause to search for an illegal substance. They didn't "see a dead body" they were called to a reported murder from a robbery gone wrong. @vlogress11c81
@vlogress11c81 4 года назад
@@Live-Life-Freely yea what I'm saying is you can't prove you smelled something. However you can prove there's a dead body. Its a murder scene and you wouldn't think they would need a warrant to investigate it. You know how many times cops say they smell weed but come back from the search empty handed or find other illegal things and no weed. Some of our laws make no sense. You would think since someone was murdered (no matter how it was reported because no one lies ever) they wouldn't need a warrent to investigate any area that has signs of foul play. I get areas that weren't involved needing a warrant. Let's say the body was in a bedroom but they found blood in the bathroom,kitchen and garage. They should be able to investigate those areas as well. Maybe not dig into personal things.

There was a story in the 80's where a father made a company a success, then made his sons partners. When he became sick, they kicked him out of his own company with NO health insurance (the ultimate cruelty). It affected the father so much to the point where he killed himself, his new wife and their five year old child. He left a note for his sons. I often wondered how they lived with themselves.

Idk why police don’t have automatic right to the scene of the homicide? Why should they need a warrant for an active crime scene?! Just dumb.
@CJ-jx4bq
@CJ-jx4bq 4 года назад
@S Venter - if you really think about it, not so straightforward as to call it dumb. The rights provided under the 4th Amendment are valued and to have them sweepingly removed without scope is a scary thought. Before the "Homicide Scene Exception" precedent, any all inclusive searching had to trust the justice services involved. Oh heck it has since. No advanced crime scene analysis abilities, searches conducted through the perspective of that police department thus their assumptions (or lack of any direction) attached. Extreme punishments if any aspect of the search is tainted. ... e.g. you're into S&M and a search will show that even if it has no relevance to the case what if it stains the perspective of the investigators. Or, by no surprise, ends up in the newspapers. Thereby tainting public opinion of you and more stories when you're considered a suspect before the person responsible is found. The case where they returned to the actual crime scene (not the burning vehicle) with a warrant specifying what they were able to look for pertinent to information learnt about the crime is a perfect example of what can be achieved without trouncing all over the Fourth Amendment. It's a balancing act between the need to also be on the possible trail of a killer before they kill again. Oh and most of the time the property owner doesn't protest. On the flip side, without direction on the part of the crime scene unit going to work everywhere, what a very unpleasant clean up you'd be left with on your hands. Nowadays obviously it's more common that the home is declared a crime scene and as more is understood about the crime, further analysis may take place at the home before it's released. I certainly wouldn't want to be the relative of a black victim in the South with a predominantly racist police department, back then. Many wouldn't now. I wouldn't want to have been in a secret gay relationship with a murder in our home that required investigating.

In the case of homicide, the perpetrator is not eligible for receiving any kind of insurance payouts.

Could also explain the sheer number of people swearing they were not guilty!

Joyce Cohen tried the same trick a lot of women (or men) who have murdered a spouse make. She fluttered aimlessly around the bed getting in the first responders' way and interfering with what they were trying to do, I think in a deliberate attempt to slow them down to make sure her husband was dead before they could get him to the ER. If the police are denied access to a crime scene by the only survivor I don't know why they couldn't get all their people out of her house but take her with them to the police station to continue questioning her and make sure that the questioning lasted long enough for them to obtain that search warrant so she could not destroy evidence while they are waiting for the paper work to go through. If she is innocent, this might allow them to find some evidence that will prove her innocent and if she is guilty she needs to be found guilty.

It's amazing the number of people that don't realize that these shows were full of little more than what amounted to stock footage. They were filmed using no name actors and actresses, using generic concepts, everything is a prop (note how often things like city names are misspelled on vehicles and what not), and *highly* inaccurate visually. These are *dramatizations* not actual footage, except where explicitly stated, and interviews with actual participants when they were available to help tell the story. Basically there's very little point in "watching" these shows because that's all you're seeing is filler. If it were stripped back to only the facts that the script was written from, these would look like court depositions... Not nearly as enticing for prime time TV when these were put on the air.
