In a recent interview, Hugh basically said he saw it as a buddy film, a straight man and funny man film. It seems Hugh and Ryan are genuinely friends.

100% agree and that’s exactly what the movie was. I mean what did people expect going into the film is my thing I’ve heard some god-awful reviews of it and I’ve heard some really good reviews of it and the god-awful reviews of the film really made me scratch my head and think to myself well either you didn’t know what the movie was going in, why the hell did you see the movie to begin with?

Disney will never be dead BUT 2 great box office successes doesn't take away the fact that they've lost a shit load of money over the last few years with Marvel and Indiana Jones film releases. Deadpool was also a successful franchise that Disney inherited with the Fox acquisition. Still need to see what they do moving forward.

Disney lost between Indiana Jones, the marvels and quantum mania probably 500ish million, between DP wolverine and Inside out 2 they are probably on the verge of completely negating those losses. They have 2 other movies that could each reach 1B this year to finish off with a massive profit

I love Deadpool & Wolverine. Seen it twice already, plan on seeing it at least one more time in theaters. However, I doubt it will either catch or pass Inside Out 2, just due to the fact that it's an R-rated film competing but also not competing with a family film (as both films were distributed by Disney), and with exceptions and outliers, family films almost always outgross R-rated films at the box office. I mean, the last time that an R-rated film was the highest grossing film of the year it was released was all the way back in 1995 with the film in question being Die Hard With a Vengeance.

I am so happy to hear this movie is succeeding. Wolverine is my favorite comic book character. I have always agreed with John in that people don't have CBM fatigue. And what is crazy is that my son hasn't even had a chance to see it yet. He was going to go this past Sunday but couldn't make it, so he will see it in its 3rd weekend for the first time. Me? I'm going to my 4th viewing this afternoon. lol

I personally think we’re still in a phase of case by case basis when it comes to interest in MCU movies. I was very excited for Deadpool & Wolverine and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I have a hard time getting excited for the next few MCU movies.

John, a bit of simple research would disprove your oft made claim that "movies that open big [like D&W] will have a much larger than normal 2nd weekend dropoff" and that's why you thought it would drop off 65%. You like to reference No Way Home, but that was the biggest outlier of the previous top 10 opening weekend movies; it had a fraction higher dropoff than Last Jedi, but both were 67.5%. But if you look at the other 8, the average dropoff was 52%, with more movies in the 39.8%-50.3% dropoff range than in the 60%+ range: Force Awakens 39.8%, Black Panther 45%, Jurassic World 49%, Avengers 50.3% vs. Lion King 60.1% and NWH/TLJ at 67.5%. With the outliers of NWH/TLJ, that average is 55%, so D&W actually came in right in line with the average 2nd weekend dropoff that these $190M+ opening weekend films have. Interestingly, 3 of the top 4 opening weekend movies ever either had a "normal" dropoff of 50%-60% (Endgame and Infinity War) or an insanely low dropoff (Force Awakens), so even a "well, the biggest ones drop the most" statement wouldn't even be accurate.

I saw this movie in the United States and in mexico 7 days apart and a lot of people in my theater for both showings had not seeing any Deadpool movies and the age range was from 7 year olds to 70+ year olds

I agree with you all. Unfortunately, due to the rating, I don't think it will pass IO2. However, I do see it finishing around 1.4B which is still insane. I've only seen the movie once and I definitely want to see it at least once more before it leaves theaters. It was such a great movie! Best in the trilogy for sure!

I think you shouldn't call D23 crap. I do think they screwed up in previous years by screwing over fans and critics like yourself. However this year they are righting the ship by not having the main presentations in only a 5000-seat stadium. They are having it in the Honda Center where it seats 18000. DOnt you think that companies that make mistakes deserve the chance to make things better and fix past mistakes. Will they be perfect no, will they continue to make mistakes in the future, of course. But to harbinger a negative attitude on past experiences when you know that Disney did make changes and the individuals who executed the previous D23s are probably fired, Just doesn't make any sense. Its like going to a movie an having an opinion that the movie is going to be bad before you even see it because the last movie they did was horrible. Sure your expectations should obviously be lower but you even say over and over and over again that you should leave your expectations at the door and judge the movie on its own merits. Same with calling D23 crap. sure last few years have been crap but this year might be better and much improved.

Around the time of Bad Boys Ride or Die. Will Smith said that industry has to come to terms that we collectively have to make better films and create a better experience to justify the audience leaving their homes to see our films. Does not surprise me it really doesn’t. It was a fun enjoyable movie. The people who don’t like this movie or didn’t go back to see the movie with the ones where their expectations were super Duper high point ridiculousness even some of the reviews roll my eyes this movie is an enjoyable movie for whatever it was MCU was never in danger of beinglackluster

It's nice to see that all but the very, very loudest "Disney is doomed" RU-vidrs are slowly recalibrating their assessments bit by bit thanks to the undeniable resurgence that's happening. It's actually kind of a shame Disney had to dilute this triumphant moment with its strange RDJ casting announcement.

Well it has a slew of plot points that don’t make sense if you think about it, but I put it aside as just a catalyst to get Deadpool and Wolverine together so I let it go. If this was firmly in the MCU I wouldn’t be so forgiving.

This movie is the prime example of if you give the people what they want, then they will show up. A non woke, r rated comic book movie with two of some the biggest characters in media in general, having a first ever team up on the big screen. Being played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh freaking Jackman. I wonder how anybody thought the movie wouldn't even come close to a billion. I knew that when it was first announced. The question we should be asking now is, are the powers at disney taking note of this success? Or is any company in film or television taking notes. Just compare the box office of The Marvels and Deadpool and Wolverine. Two completely different movies with two differents agendas behind them. And look at the results.

Non-woke? D&W is the most "woke" movie of the year. By a mile. A foot-to-the-floor, non-stop flood of homoerotic references, dialogue and jokes. Deadpool’s overt crush on Thor and ogling of Gambit, the “fucky fucky” guy at the TV and on and on and on. There’s a lesbian couple. True, they’re only in the movie for a couple of scenes, but that’s sometimes MORE than enough to illicit calls of WOKE! from certain people. While lost in the Void, Deadpool and Wolverine, unable to save themselves, turn to a group of people who are essentially a black guy (BLADE) and two women (ELECTRA and X-23). Yeah, Gambit was there too, but normally white male characters needing to turn to black or female characters for help/saving usually ends in the call of WOKE! When our male heroes confront the big bad female character they get completely destroyed. Casandra absolutely beats their asses without any trouble or coming close to breaking a sweat. This happens multiple times in the film. When a woman so effortlessly beats up the white male characters, you normally can be sure the cries of WOKE are about to echo in the valley. When the Deadpool Corps shows up in the third act, despite the fact that there are about 100 of them, obviously the leader of the group is the 1 female version (Lady Deadpool). The only women having a higher position than all those male variants is normally 100% guaranteed to get the WOKE! battlecry going. Kidpool is gender-swapped. In the comics, he’s male. But in Deadpool and Wolverine they gender-swap her into a girl (the real-life daughter of Ryan Reynolds). A movie doing a gender swap is one of the highest trigger points for the WOKE people. Off the screen, the movie’s 3 main figures (Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman) are all gay rights, gender equality, and social justice supporters. This type of thing alone is usually enough for the WOKE! crowd to start handing out the label.

I think the difference mainly lies in that audiences we're entertained by a movie and not a desperate attempt for a certain message to go out. Thanks for your comment John.
