I thought the title said "deaf accessibility in holes" and I was really confused but then I was like, "no that makes zero sense" gosh I need a nap.

I have a friend who travels a lot and is also in a wheelchair and she often tells me stories about how even "accessible" rooms don't have enough space for her to turn into the bathroom to get to the toilet, bathtub, or both. Luckily she can walk short distances so she's always been okay, but that would be a problem for anyone who couldn't do that. She also uses a manual chair so anyone in a power wheelchair would likely have even more trouble with narrow hallways and rooms like that.

jeanetteisrandom I'm in a wheelchair too and the main problem for me is that the hotel beds are too damn high for me and most other wheelchair users I know to climb into!

Suggestion: Accesibility everywhere!! schools, restaurants, parks, stores, government places, absolutely everywhere!

I have a emotional support dog that I bring with me on planes to keep me from having a panic attack and the only hotel we could afford was one that didn't allow pets. No big deal. Legally, we still could bring the dog into the hotel because he was a service animal. The hotel denied us a room because of my dog. They refunded our money but still kinda disobeyed the law by refusing service to people with a service dog. So, we had to pay a little more to go to a different hotel.

i would really appreciate doorbells in all hotel rooms. i'd also really like doorbells in my apartment complex. the gap under the door to my unit is so big that anytime someone else's door gets knocked on in my hallway, it sounds like my door is getting knocked on. i've learned to just ignore knocks and noises from the hallway unless i know i'm expecting company. then i just camp my door because i'm unsure if i'll hear them.

I stayed in a hotel (I honestly forget where...somewhere on the east coast of the US) that had some accessibility things in all the rooms: fire alarms that flashed, wide spaces between beds and walls, wheelchair accessible bathrooms (legitimately so, as I have a paraplegic uncle and know at least the space he needs). Problem with the bathrooms though was the distance between the toilet and the toilet paper dispenser: the other side of the open space. Inconvenient and annoying for me, an "able bodied" person, but someone who would need to go between the toilet and the wheelchair already and the toilet paper dispenser is waaaaay over there?? No. And it was built in to the vanity so it would've been impossible to take off the roll to bring it closer. Nice try?

This isn't related to an accessible hotel room but one time the person who cleaned our room didn't lock the door when they were done. My dad and I had both left our laptops in the hotel room and I had left my tablet as well, luckily none of our stuff got stolen, but it easily could've been.

I forget what hotel it was, but they had left the metal piece at the top of the door in a position that made it so the door couldn't close all the way.

Really fascinating to learn about Accessibility rooms. But it got me thinking, do you know if there is a website for reviewing these rooms? It would be a good idea for there to be one so that people who need those rooms knows about what are in the rooms based on the hotel so that they can have an easier time selecting rooms based on their needs.

I've seen a few websites specifically for sharing accessibility information and reviews. I'm based in the UK so I don't know if it's local but I think they probably are out there x

Think I've found an international one! It has reviews with star rating, so I'm thinking you get more information than what venues think is full access. www.euansguide.com/

That is a good idea in my opinion. Also, the reservationist could have a checklist when accepting a lodging request. .

So you are the first deaf youtuber i stumbled upon ( on my old channel) after years of signing. and yeah basically you opened my eyes to whole other community and through that community i was inspired to take something that had previously just been a class to meet my academic standards for a "foreign language" and turn it into an ability to create friends, broaden horizons, and help people around me that many people near where im from forget about. Wow this sounds cheesy cool (you probs wont even see this cool)

Canadian hotels are atrocious for deaf accessibility. We don't have an ADA equivalent up here. Most hotels, and all the chains use proprietary TV systems in which the tvs and remotes have no way to turn on Closed Captions! At Whistler, the Cristal Lodge Suites were the first Canadian hotel I've been that had Closed Captions on their tvs. Shaw Cable systems provide the services for most hotels, and they don't have closed captions on their proprietary system for hotels. When I was in the hospital 6 weeks ago, Shaw provided the TV system for the hospital and their patients. Again their system for patients had no closed captions. At over $10 a day for tv in your hospital room, I wouldn't have bothered anyway, but it would have been nice to have that choice and accessibility. I hope that Canada finally does get laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act, but until then, disabled people like us will continue to get screwed over in Canada because we have no protections like the ADA.

I was staying in a hotel room... alone as I had to catch a flight early in the morning also it was super close from my hotel to the flight so that way I won't miss it anyway! While I was there, there was a thing where you can put a fire sign on a door to let them know that you're deaf which that was a good thing BUT one night I took a bath. I was watching a movie with this loud volume because I'm deaf 😂 so I pressed pause to grabbed a drink. Guess what I heard a very funny noise 🤔 I checked if my movie were on but it wasn't.. so I had to get out of the bath to find out what it was coming from. I saw a huge bright red light flashing in my room, it was a FIRE ALRAM and I was like SHIIT!!! I throw myself a clothes that was laying on a floor and ran! When I ran out the alarm went off..... it was a false alarm 🙄 wasn't happy about that... so yeah that's my story peace out

No one uses a TTY? I am autistic and I have a TTY. I have phone anxiety issues and using a TTY is easier for me than using my voice. What's the name of the TTY app on your phone? I would LOVE to have a TTY app on my phone rather than having to plug my TTY into my phone. Since I don't know ASL a video phone would be useless to me. Also, since I use a TTY due to anxiety issues; seeing a person on the other end wouldn't help.

Naomi I have an android phone. It has a TTY mode which works great with my TTY. But I am not aware of any TTY apps for android.

Naomi I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. Somewhere in the settings is the TTY mode so you can plug an external TTY into the mic/heaphone jack. Phones have had those for quite some time now.

As someone who meets someone with handicaps/42 different medical issues. now 45 as of january. 2 conventions a year. I know she doesn't sleep much due to 1) the pain keeping her awake until she's too tired to fight it. 2) medicine she has to take then lay completely still for it to work before she can sleep. or in the morning before she can get up and prepare for the day. (just background lead-in to the following. it's long winded. I tend to ramble) So far she hasn't had issue with the accessibility rooms themselves. But, her mother. the caregiver who is always with her for helping with getting dressed, bathing, etc. whereas I'm the one who switches out occasionally for walking around conventions as well as keep an epi-pen on hand to give said mother a break. Well, said friend stays awake which can keep her mother awake who needs the sleep to keep up with her daughter. So, she uses a club room/snack suite/ or whatever you call it. That hotels tend to offer. Usually those rooms have a restroom right inside. which she needs more often than most. Related to her primary disease which was the one she was born with. A disease and disability that will kill her should any damage be done to the weakened area. sometimes damage can simply be not getting to go pee in time. the bladder wall. is thin. And causes severe pain unless she counters with the high level pain medication she takes constantly. Sheraton, downtown Atlanta. Built a new club suite. and refused to put a restroom in. Removing a place that 1) provided a way for her to read, watch tv, talk to me at all hours without keeping her mother awake. 2) limiting her accessibility because of lack of a restroom to a suite that's guaranteed not to have foods that will cause her to have a severe allergic reaction.

How to use it. I never used a TTY before and I honestly tried to look up on tutorials on how to use it. It seemed confusing to me.

I would be interested in this video, too. Last I knew, you had to purchase a separate mobile TTY that costs like $300. There is also Sprint IP Relay available on cell phones, but I hate typing on my phone.

weird but i dont know if ive been in "accessible" hotel rooms apart of braille room numbers (needed, thank you). i thought the accessibility stuff in hotel rooms meant just wheelchair accessibility and the rooms were always on groundfloor. iʻd love hard floors, not groundfloor, easy way to lifts, and as blin accommodation very dark shades i can open or close and temperature i can choose (windows i can open a bonus)

It seems like they are just adding these features to show but not to make it work then! At least their employees should know what is there in these rooms and how to use them! We had some bad experiences with water, bugs and more in hotel rooms too, a lot of hotels need to step their game up!!! 😞

Rikki Poynter looks like the software tty on iPhone only works in USA, can you confirm as you have been in both Canada and USA. "UPDATE: Confirm, TTY software is available only in US. Transcript (history conversation) storage for only few days and then it disappear. That mean, it’s our responsible to save in note or share it yourself somehow." - from illustrator.blog-alloon.com/archives/2230

Seriously why even put a phone in there at all if they know a deaf person will be in the room....they should either have a video phone/something similar that you can actually use, or nothing. That's also soo bizarre to me that the guy didn't just ring the damn bell haha...weird.
