Let me start off by saying how much I admire your videos and relationship! ❤ Just found your channel and have been binging your videos. Nee subscriber!🌸 My mother had a deaf friend when she was young so she learned sign language so that they could more easily communicate. She said that it was like their secret language in school..(they were in elementary school). My mom found that this was life changing for her and taught me sign language when I was young. We would regularly communicate this way so that it stayed fresh in my head and I was able to practice. I actually picked up on it fast and loved it as a child almost as much as I do now. ❤ I have been able to use this knowledge to help at work. If someone needs translation between asl and speaking then I can help them to understand each other and that makes me happy. I have a one year old daughter now and I have taught her to express basic needs through sign and am planning to continue to teach her all that I know. I want her to be able to help others but my main goal is to give her the opportunity to understand and communicate for herself...so that if she is so lucky to have a friend like my mom had, or a partner then she will instantly be able to communicate and strengthen that bond!! ❤ Sorry for the long comment but I feel very deeply about this and am so happy to have found your channel!❤❤❤

That last question made me laugh. One time I was sitting in my 5th grade class just messing with my hands and I noticed the sign language interpreter was talking about me because her and the student were looking at me and laughing. Turns out she was saying “wow, Danielle must be very comfortable” because I apparently kept signing comfortable over and over again without knowing it. Lol 😂 but now I’ll never forget what the sign for comfortable is!

The answer Ellen gave at 1:47 is soooo spot on. I'm learning ASL, and Ellen speaking while signing helps my vocabulary lots for exactly the reason she described. But then having Ryan in between is a great way to test my skills, like they said. AND I like watching each answer Ryan gives once without captions and once with, so I appreciate that the captions are optional. She described how I utilize the videos so accurately it's like she's reading my mind 😂 love the videos!

I rarely see a hearing and deaf couple mainly because of the language barrier. But it is truly amazing to see you two make it work no matter the differences. My parents (who are deaf and I am hearing) said that it would be so hard for them to date a hearing person.

Wow that's amazing usually when two deaf people have a child, that child is also deaf. How did they go about teaching you how to speak, and sign if they cannot speak themselves. Or do they speak? I hope you're not offended by that question. I know sign language and am hearing, I just really wondered what that was like for you.

She knew some sign language and went to his table to take his order and the man was super gracious that someone there knew how to sign. Ever since reading that, I've been trying to learn sign language just from RU-vid videos and I love it. I also prefer it because I hate the sound of my own voice haha.. I love that you speak and sign at the same time because I can associate the signs with the words you are speaking. On sign only channels I can't really watch the person speaking because my eyes are on the words at the bottom of the screen rather than on them. When Ryan speaks I read the words and then back the video up so I can watch him after I know what he is saying, which isn't an issue but speaking deff helps for someone learning.

My husband and I found you guys just a few days ago, and I'm really enjoying your videos. My son is dating a girl who is deaf. She uses her voice, has hearing aids and lip-reads, but I realize after watching your videos that she may be missing a fair amount of the conversation. I've lived in foreign countries where I didn't speak the language well, so I'd just fake it that I knew what everyone was saying. It was very isolating. I'll be more mindful of that now when talking with her. My husband and I started learning ASL because we want to communicate better with her , but also because her parents and extended family are mostly deaf or hard of hearing and ASL is their primary language at home. I also notice that she struggles more with using her voice later in the day when she's tired. It would be nice if we knew enough ASL that she didn't have to work so hard for us to understand. And of course now...with everyone wearing masks in public, being able to sign seems vital. Before I even saw this video, I was thinking that I like how you use your voice and sign at the same time because I can watch your hands instead of the captions and I'm absorbing a lot more vocabulary that way. Thank you for your videos. I feel more prepared and less likely to accidentally say or do something rude when I meet her parents and extended family.

Hi :) props to you for learning more about ASL and the dynamics between Deaf and Hearing. I’m glad our videos could be of help 😊 From what I’ve learned, Deaf fatigue is a very real thing, which is when a Deaf person gets tired from keeping up with conversation. Through my experience people who learn another’s language tend to foster a better relationship, so sounds like your on the start to a great relationship 😊

As a hearing person, I appreciate the fact that you use your voice Ellen because it makes the video easier to follow for me (even if I already have subtitles to follow). I tend to be impatient when I watch a video of a person just signing in a complete silence, like I can't concentrate because I'm to disturb by the fact that something is missing (my hearing) and also because it multiply the noises around me that can't be covered by a silent talk (noises of electronic devices, of the street...). In your videos, there is both sound with Ellen and silence with Ryan and I love this combo, it help me to immerge in the deaf culture while managing to stay focus. Even the fact that Ryan is making asmr-ish sounds with his mouth while signing is helping me to focus haha. I don't know if anyone can relate? ^^

I totally agree with you Ellen (Hi! New watcher here!) I use your voice and signing as a study tool. It's so helpful as a hearing person to watch, listen and connect the two. You guys inspired me to learn signing, I struggle with my hearing and find myself gesturing naturally however signing is opening up a completely new world for me and developing my ability to communicate. After seeing you guys drive through the drive-thru, and the way that Ryan was treated - it made me commit to learning to sign, I hope that whenever I meet someone deaf I can help them to feel included. Many thanks! Bless the both of you!

Using her voice helps me learn to sign bc Ryan signs fast. But you both help me learn correctly. I like it.

I appreciate your adding of closed captions because I am hearing, but I also have a mild auditory processing disorder. So I enjoy being able to both hear you, see you sign, and read the captions. That way I capture all of what you are saying at all times.

I agree with Ryan, in that watching your videos to me (although I am not learning sign language and don't know somebody who is deaf) it is so interesting and amazing to me to watch you guys communicate, see how the dynamic works, become aware of the deaf community, and see all of the other ways that one can communicate without words. I have learned so much from your videos!

That answer is perfect! Definitely learning from seeing her sign and listening to her speak, and also activating my brain more by being tested when he signs and doesn't speak. It's great!

Ellen please please please please continue to sign and speak at the same time (simcom). I have learned a ton from signduo. I turn on closed captions and slow down the speed of the video and MAN!!!! I cannot imagine learning more in an actual ASL class with 30 students around me. Because of Signduo I've learned about the deaf community and I've become confident and conversational (when a fluent signer signs slowly)😂 I am so happy!!! Thank you Ellen & Ryan for the joy you bring to this married, stay home mom of 6. I am so very blessed by this channel.

My 17 month old son is autistic and he is non verbal and doesn’t use body language effectively. I love sign and we are going to be working with my son teaching him sign and the picture system so he can communicate. Anyways- he LOVES watching you guys. He is fascinated by how you use your hands and I really think it’s going to help him pick up on it more quickly. Thanks for all the videos- I love watching them and now Elijah does too!

I agree...I love that you sign and speak at the same time...I've been able to pick-up and learn more words as I can focus on your hand movements versus reading the subtitles! I do miss a lot of Ryan's facial expressions/moments because I'm reading the subtitles, but it's getting easier to pick-up signs and I just rewind LOL.

Awe! I love how you showed and explained the difference between those 2 signs! Very helpful! I know it's very simple compared to what you offer on this channel, but I wish you'd do a "sign of the day" at the end of your videos because I'm coming with such beginner knowledge and it would be great to get that kind of a thorough look and breakdown of a sign regularly along with all the conversational use that I love in your videos.

Any advice for meeting people who would be willing to learn sign, or how to encourage/inspire people to? Im HoH and often my friends won’t really learn any ASL even when I try to teach them bc with enough tries I’ll eventually get what they’re saying... but it’s so tiring & frustrating sometimes! Ps- Seriously warms my heart seeing this channel. Every video gives me a lot of hope for future society (& one day being able to make videos like these too). If y’all are ever in Rochester I’d love to host you guys at URSMD! I think a lot of the students, especially those in Deaf health, could really benefit from your insights (also would be great to meet you:)

There was a moment when Ryan was signing that Ellen moved back to give room, and that reminded me of the time when I was walking with my deaf friend and her interpreter. The interpreter was signing and accidentally hit this girl. She said sorry and all, but we had a good laugh and all.
