We are staying 3 nights in The Old Sweetshop, 163a Beach Street, Deal, and have enjoyed exploring Deal. It is a pity so many shops, pubs and business premises have been converted in to Airbnb establishments. The town has sadly lost much of it’s heart, which must be more apparent over the winter months ☹️

THanks for the memories ! I was born and bred in Deal, and remember many of the old stores, and particularly Divitos ice ceam parlour. Tony Divio was my cousin n law - he married my cousin Barbara Baley, daughter of Ted and Dorothy Bailey who owned Baileys the Butchers in King Street. All long gone now of course. I remember too the wrecks visible on the Goodwinsat the end of the war, and the US tanker that broke in half and burned for days, and the salvaged oil being loaded on tanker wagons at Walmer station, and another fire started by a US serviceman smoking I believe.

Cavell's chocolate shop. My great grandparents were Cavell's! Im going to have to do some digging. I would love to know of there was a connection. I think one of the line of daughters married a Dawkins in the 1900's.
