Dealing with a crack in the soundboard

Sometimes it is tough to deal with unexpected problems, but it can be a good opportunity to learn and make something beautiful out of it.
This soundboard cracked unexpectedly during the final phases of the French polishing process. I don't know exactly what caused it. The guitar suffered no blows, and there was no significant change in humidity. I must assume inner stresses of the wood led to tensions once it was thicknessed.
I made a prior repair with a spruce spline but it did not please me. It was a sound repair, but it can be very difficult to match the refraction of light in a particular piece of spruce, especially one with a lot of medullary rays.
So I changed strategy and decided not to try and make it invisible, but to change the design of the guitar to deal with it, extending the rosette to the side the fingerboard.

Hey everyone! Video of the other side is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sbPqq5cHywE.html Symmetry was the preferred option of most of you. And so I have done it! I also thought the symmetrical would be the best, and I am happy I went for it in the end!

I love when not everything is symmetrical all the time. So I don't think you should match the other side. This inlay makes the guitar really unique and now has a story. People will have questions and find the guitar interesting. The guitar will stand out from other guitars. It looks incredible and are very beautiful and now have a little bit of a history attached to it. It doesn't have to be symmetrical. Great work 🙂👍

Thanks so much for the input and kind words! In fact, I have already made it symmetrical at this point, and even posted a video on it, but I do get your point, thanks again! Cheers

I’ve seen that effect on a few guitars but they’ve all been symmetrical. Personally I think I’d prefer the symmetrical look simply because the design is cool and effect is a nice touch.

Thanks for the input! Surely, everything is normally symmetrical in classical guitars. But change sometimes is enticing, and another side is more work :D. I honestly haven't decided yet

@@chriscrevelsguitarsI am certainly not a luthier. I do have good woodworking skills so I can appreciate the effort it takes. I am currently finalizing a re-topping of a classical guitar that I bought last year the previous owner had sanded way too aggressively. It has been a bit more work than expected but rewarding. Anyways your approach on that crack was inspiring. I bought a luthier made classical a few years ago as b-stock with a similar crack and no finish. It’s 10mm long starting at the purfling, about 4mm from the neck and was cleated. So I am seriously considering your approach to make it disappear. I think it could be a fun and rewarding project after this current one is completed. Thanks for the inspiration.

That made my day, thank you! Be sure to let me know if you ever do it, I'll love to know.

In the end, have you gone for the symmetrical choice?
@chriscrevelsguitars
@chriscrevelsguitars Год назад
Yes! Most of the input here and elsewhere have gone in this direction. Haven't done it yet because other projects got in the way but will do it shortly

Is your work space humidity fluctuating too much? What happened
@chriscrevelsguitars
@chriscrevelsguitars Год назад
Not so much, actually. Its is somewhat controlled. It does fluctuate but only within the range 35%-55%, which should be fine. Honestly, I am not sure why it happened, but I'm guessing some inner stress of the piece, or movement of the ebony in the soundboard.

Thanks! It was scary though, putting a knife in a semi-finished soundboard
