Dealing With Intense Physical Pain

A woman dealing with intense physical pain and severe chronic illness is trying to understand her ongoing torturous experience and heal through meditation. She would like to know how to use non-duality for pain, the feeling of helplessness and despair, and the fear and suffering that she is experiencing.
Rupert notices her desire to be free of pain and responds that you shouldn't think that your desire to be free of pain is an egoic desire. You should want to be free of pain. Nor should you try to practice welcoming your pain because this will conflict with your natural impulse to resist or reject the painful sensation.
Awareness does not have to practice welcoming. It is already naturally accepting everything that has arisen - like the empty space of a room accepts the chairs and people in it without resistance.
This clip was taken from one of Rupert's weekly webinars.

Sending love and support to anyone watching this while experiencing great suffering! You are not alone. 💙 For years, I shared a weekly meditation gathering for patients suffering with chronic pain. Their intense willingness to become vulnerable and to let go into presence was very humbling. “Fierce grace” is quite accurate.

Thank you to the person who dared to ask about physical pains as most of Advaita teaching address mainly the issues with thoughts and emotions rarely acute physical pains. And most grateful to hear the answer, especially clarification of not imposing" I have to accept pains" 😊😊😊

Hi Karen. Have you heard of dr joe Dispenza? If you haven't, take a look at his testimonials on RU-vid. There are many others that have had profound healing following his teachings accompanied by his meditations...you can access his website which has a video of his recent scientific research on how we heal ourselves. ❤️ Someone else you can lookup on RU-vid is Cornelius Christopher, he holds a coherence healing zoomcall several times a week, in which you can keep your camera off to participate. I have been a student of dr Joe's for several years, also I joined the coherence healing zoomcall 6 months ago. Both have helped me understand how we create our reality...lots of love and healing blessings to you Karen on your healing journey 🙏💚

I don't know who sent this but I recommend the book Grace and Grit by Ken Wilbur. It's about his relationship with his wife who was dieing of a rare form of cancer. It's one of the most raw, honest, and beautiful books about illness and being conscious through the process from both partners.

For anyone going through this, I know how it feels and my heart is with you. What helps me a lot with integration of intense trauma information is cbd oils (smooths out fight or flight in the nervous system) and circular breathing (processes the trauma information out ) and somatic intuitive movement (helps relax and also move the painful information through the body. God bless You.

Thank you Rupert, needed to hear and understand that... As suffering from acute chronic physical pains, I have also tried to practice acceptance, and it only increases the pains... For dull pains, emotions, disturbing thoughts, the direct non practice of acceptance works and all that remains is Peace😊😊😊. However, for acute physical pains that's more challenging... So abiding without trying anything ❤

Not sure about this answer given by Rupert to be honest. Sometimes some more practical advice is called for. If you are in such dire straights with constant unbearable pain you need to find a physician who can prescribe self administered pain relief or a constant care regime. No amount of well intentioned words as concepts will touch this kind of bodily pain. Ramesh Balsekar would often say I can’t help you with this … if you have a toothache you need to go and see a dentist. I can only help you to maybe find peace of mind in daily living which you will find if it is God’s will.

Yes, but this is just common sense, that's probably why Rupert didn'tn mention that. He wasn't responded specifically about how to relieve the physical pain, but how not to add psychological suffering upon it.

Maybe I can offer some information that can help dealing with chronic pain. At least it helped me a lot to see the roots of my suffering. Body and mind are not separate. So when you are dealing with chronic pain your mind is also involved but that is normally on an unconscious level. But it is possible to inquire into these unconscious beliefs. Let's assume that every feeling is there to help you. While trying to be in peace with the feeling you can ask the feeling directly "What is it that you want to tell me." and then wait and see what stories come up. From there you start the inquiry and dig deeper and ask "What does it mean? Why is that a problem?" It takes a bit of practice. Important is an open mindset based on the feelings you are having. Its not really thinking about it. It's more opening the space to let the answer come up. You can always test the relevance of the thought by observing your feelings. If it is relevant it is kind of "sticky". There will be a reaction in your body. How does it feel to claim the opposite? It's not about proving that the story is right or wrong. Just becoming conscious of what you are telling yourself will help you. You might want to have a look at the channel of Scott Kiloby. He is not as eloquent as Rupert. But he has very helpful information on this topic.

i have heard Sadhguru say, to paraphrase, there are three types of physical pain. 1) from accidents, which may or may not be your fault. 2) infections of various types, which again could just happen to you. 3) chronic illnesses, which he suggest is a result of bad choices in you environment/living conditions, or choices you make in life style that bring about a physical/emotional/mental imbalance, which translates into physical pain. in my experience, unfortunately, there is one other aspect that can create pain in the body. this is not easy to talk about in a very literate fashion, but, i will give it a shot. ... if you can appreciate the sense of emotional and physical aspects of "balance" (stability / well being) are about recognizing (being Aware), in terms of the Ying/Yang, or the dynamic state of equilibrium that is present in the experience of compassion and loving. this suggest that the forces acting on the human experience are both a "pushing" and a "pulling". it suggest our experience is governed by the terrestrial world and the electromagnetic spectrum, which speaks of polarities as integral to basic forces in consciousness. the stability of the human experience is how well you can recognize this within your experience, as a "grounding state". in this respect, if you can not see yourself as the "unbroken thread" and "body as a column", within the energies at work in the terrestrial world, you are likely to be susceptible to energies that might create "breaks" in the "flow", create "congestion", which disrupts the bodies harmony with its environment. watching the breath/breathing or the acting of it within the body can be very important as a "push/pull", and in combination with your posture ( or perhaps some Yoga exercises), can aid in the identification of certain types of "blockage" or "corruption". this "corruption", might be viewed as forces working as degradation, or challenging your lack of Awareness, or a would be "argument". in this respect, to have a fundamental state of compassion and loving in nature, is to attempt to be understanding as to how you might have erred and your willingness to resolve this condition, to be the Truth that you are. its not literal conversation, but, knowing the nature of "Truth" is in being WHOLE, which is to be with the forces governing the human experience. to fight against the "argument" or imposition, or ignore it, is to act with little to no compassion/love. also, a subtlety that is not apparent is the "root" from which the "pain" is located. you may feel the Pain in one location, but thru watching the breath, simple posturing, and simple "push/pulls" within each you can come to know where the congestion is located, (a result of how "push/pull is manifested by forces that act as degradation as well. ( T'ai Chi, and the Tao Te Ching are excellent reference text/meditative practices ). ones life style may not be as healthy as one would like to believe. knowing the nature of the TRUTH of being, is what the divine or "life eternal" is about... okay, this is a "sketch" of how pain manifest in the body. becoming sensitive to these forces/conditions is every ones responsibility. it is really sad to realize so much pain in the world is the result of not knowing about or being able to put in to practice, that which allows for us to be healthy and Whole. but then again, as natural as it is to find the divine, it is not an entitlement.

I have been suffering from 1 form of extreme pain to another off and on for the past 10 years. It has broken me in ways I didn't know existed inside myself. The ways in which I cope are not healthy and at the age of 40 I've now lived 22 years more than I had planned. I've been seriously contemplating suicide for the past few years and I don't think I will be able to hold off much longer. My daughter turns 18 December 21st so I'm gonna make sure I stick around until some time after the first of the year and I don't want her to know I commit suicide so I will more than likely just make it look like a bad car accident or carbon monoxide or a drug overdose all threw would be quite easy to pull off . I've been a drug addict for the past 10 years anyway so that wouldn't surprise anyone

All this is so comfusing for me. I have so much anxiety and want nothing more than for it to go away. How should I think?
@englishincontext4025
@englishincontext4025 Год назад
It isn't just about thinking. Find a good teacher of the Alexander technique. Like many human experiences anxiety is the result of excess muscular tension you unwittingly create on a daily basis. An Alexander teacher can work to gently reduce that tension, re-balance the muscular pulls, and teach you to stop creating the thoughts which lead to such problems. The technique has an entirely therapeutic effect, which is achieved not through psycho-analysis, but through helping the pupil recover the 'physical' sensitivity to their own bodies which has been lost due to habitual misuse. At the moment you are unaware of the cause and effect between thoughts and the bodily responses which are the effect of those thoughts. This is common, due to our tendency to act and think in an habitual manner. The work done by the teacher will restore your 'bodily' awareness so you can perceive the link between thought and action. Then you become your own teacher. Retired Alexander teacher. UK.

@benaregai9416
@benaregai9416 Год назад
Keep remembering yourself. Moment to moment. As manty times as is requires. Abide in your beingness. Slowly, the body will start to relax and the actual sensation will itself shift. First to a neutral intensity. Then even bliss. Suffering always lies in the resistance of it. Abiding in our true nature the resistance ceases, and the relaxation permeates the bodymind. Its hard long work, there will be lots of suffering but it seems to be the only way out (through)

Just an honest question, what about torture, like if a terrorist mutilated your appendages and you say with the pain and fear for hours, would you not be so sensitized you are constantly a suffering separate entity fearful, or would you abide anyway as it is anyway just pain becomes so intense you go into a coma of consciousness, probably after an intense wave of screaming as a fragmented entity super deluded into thinking this is happening maybe it’s still not a refute but the fact that this can happen as a possibility is frightening and real and would it be possible to endure is my basic question if you had not other choice
@plumeria66

In such circumstances you have to learn how to go out of body. Suffering isn’t necessary and staying in a painful body would continue the hardship. Out of body frees you. You are not obligated to stay in a torture cell.
