That's a lot of amazing information actually. Two or three years ago, I stored my PS3 Slim in a protective box to shield it from moisture and other potential issues, initially thinking that the problem was a faulty PSU. However, while investigating and checking everything yesterday, I discovered that the actual issue was the YLOD. I proceeded to disassemble the console, cleaned it, and applied new thermal paste. Upon powering it on, it failed again, but on the third attempt, it miraculously worked. I was thrilled, but then encountered an OS problem. Today, as I was planning to reinstall the OS, I faced another setback as the console failed to turn on. After watching your video and considering my limited skills in soldering and electronics, I've come to the realization that this is a problem I cannot fix. I will try to search for someone like you in my country that maybe can fix it but it's a job that requires a lot of care and affection, so it will likely stay in the moisture-proof box as a relic. Thanks for making this video and share all that!!!!!!!

Wow - great job on this. I personally have two CECHK01 units and a one CECH4201A. The first CECHK01 I recently acquired, which worked at the start, was full of dust - I took it apart carefully all the way to the main board to clean all the dust out. Then put it all back together to my dismay got a GLOD. I then took it apart again to try to figure out if I missed something and now it only YLOD. I have a 3.3V TTL board on order and will connect to the PS3 which is YLODing to figure out what the SYSCON data reports. I don't know how cleaning the CECHK01 carefully caused the end result of GLOD and then now it only YLOD's. Subbing as well

Sorry for the late reply. When you take the PS3 apartment, was your heat sink sticking tightly to the CPU and GPU? In the process of pulling the heat sink up like this, you might also break a few solder joints under the GPU. But the GPU was still connecting well enough to get pass the boot up process. When you do the second tear down, you pull up the heat sink again and break a few more solder joints. This time, the GPU disconnected enough that the PS3 cannot even finish the boot up process. This is exactly why people were complaining about the brittleness of the lead-free solder joints. But be mindful that it is *not* the only reason for YLOD. Another big problem is the bumpgate issue. For more information, feel free to watch Felix's video @ripfelix3020 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I0UMG3iVYZI.html

Ylod could be caused by some of the power supply in the motherboard (dc to dc converters) could be caused by cracked gpu joints balls could be caused by nec tokins lost capacitance and much others causes so is good to see you used your syscom to realize what is the problem .

3034 error doesn't mean bad RSX. That is data communication error between Cell/RSX/Southbridge which caused by bga defects under Cell and/or RSX. Reball may fix this problem. 3034 error as usual comes with 4xxx error.

@jelkobg5944 Год назад
In 95% of the time it is the RSX.
@EdwardplayzYT
@EdwardplayzYT 15 дней назад
Usually the only real fix for this to prevent it in the long term (for 3034 at least) is to replace the component that is broken (most likely RSX on early phats with 90nm RSXs, otherwise if it has a 65nm and YLODs, its most likely the NEC TOKINs genuinely dying) There are shops in the US, parts of Europe, and some other countries I believe that offer a service referred to as Frankenstein PS3s where you can send a dead PS3 for repair and if its the RSX they can replace it with a fixed, more reliable model from later models.

Thanks for a good video. If rsx is problem and need a reflow i find it best to delid them and use tin foil and when you delid use a very small amount of cooking oil to lubricate the tool and it will slide under the heat sink to cut adhesive and make sure to wash out gpu with ipa before heating as gpu can be contaminated underneath. The balls need to be clean to spread when you heat up to reflow or remove. I noticed my gpu was stuck down with old contaminates and when I cleaned with ipa the other gpu came off easier. Good luck with your rework station.

Nice. I should point out though that the original backwards compatible PS3 do have a design flaw with the solder balls and binding agent inside the chip which eventually cracks. Hence the request of many to replace the RSX as a preventative measure going forward.

My 65nm Slim model also had this. It wouldn't turn on at all but I re-applied thermal paste and it came back to life partially because if I try to play any intensive game such as Red Dead Redemption or GoW 3, it would YLoD. I feel bad for putting it out of order because it was the first console I bought with my own money and gave me thousands of hours of playtime, but now I bought a super slim that works great.

I like to repair and sell consoles, but one day I was at a yard sale and saw idk how the shiny glossy plastic of a ps3 I then look better and it was a backyards compatible ps3 the model is the cecha01 and it uses hardware to play ps2 games, I then asked how much he would sold it for and he was like 5 bucks and I was shocked, well it didn't have any controllers or cables but still. I rushed home and plugged it in, and it turned on I looked on the back and it was an ntsc model not pal because I'm from Italy so. This ps3 didn't have any dust and the seal was still on. So I had 2 questions how the hell did this American ps3 got here and 2 it was mint, I think it never got used. I'm still asking myself how did it get here. Btw good video
@hardwarerepair200
@hardwarerepair200 Год назад
Lucky you man! I wish I could get a backward compatible model for 5 bucks only! If you installed CFW, you can use webMAN MOD to check the statistics such as how long has this console been use. I think NTSC or PAL doesn't matter (correct me if I am wrong), since there is no region lock for PS3 games. But for PS2 games, then yes, it is locked to NTSC. I hope that you could figure out the story behind your PS3, I would love to listen to it!

I'm glad people are realising that the YLOD indicates a _general_ failure instead of something easily diagnosable (like jumping to conclusions and saying it's the capacitors or the ball grid array). It's a lot like the Xbox 360's red ring - that's also a _general hardware failure_ which has been known for a long time.

Syscon should be the first thing to check. The soldering skills required for syscon is not that difficult. You should be able to do it with a bit of practice. But the fixes such as NEC/TOKIN replacement, and RSX swap can be super difficult.

Just followed this guide to diagnose mine! Thank you so much!! Left feedback on your google form as well but figured I'd also write a comment to ask for guidance. Model: CECHL01 Errors: A0403034 = CELL/RSX Communication Error, A0404002 = RSX Data Error, A0404421 = CELL or RSX Data Error I'm assuming this means I need to reflow RSX and/or replace the capacitors considering I have the 65 nanometer RSX chip. Any opinions? All help is greatly appreciated!
@hardwarerepair200
@hardwarerepair200 Год назад
It seems like the RSX chip is dead, which is so unfortunate. We couldn't tell if it is the bumpgate or the BGA problem from the error log. But given that you have a 65nm RSX, I would say it is more likely to be a BGA problem. If you are comformtable with reballing, I would recommand you to do reball instead. Otherwise, you can try reflowing it. Replacing the capacitors won't help in your case.
@hardwarerepair200
@hardwarerepair200 Год назад
Oh, I saw your comments on the Google Form just now. This problem happens only after tearing down your PS3? Do you remember if you had a hard time trying to remove the heat sink from the CPU and GPU? I suspect that when you try to pull the heat sink up, some solder balls in the BGA cracks. It happens to me a few times before. It might work with a simple reflow, but I would suggest you to do a reball.
@ColeDaCMNDR
@ColeDaCMNDR Год назад
@@hardwarerepair200 That's exactly what happened! I had to really tug on the board and bottom plate to get it off the heatsink after repasting with Arctic MX4. Didn't hear any strange cracks or pops but the tension alone probably killed one of the connections. I might end up using that board as a donor for future projects, since my first comment I bought a cheap cosmetically damaged system to replace the internals in my original, so far so good. I have a first model 60gb that got YLOD after 7 years of heavy usage so I watched a video with a technique where you cover the motherboard in baking aluminum foil and bake it in the oven on the highest temperature for 15 minutes and it worked, but for a few hours then died again. no joke. I tried it 3 times, it always worked, but I gave up and bought myself a Slim that still works today. I wonder what kind of problem it had...

If you check syscon, it will be very likely to see 3034, which points to the problem of the RSX. Felix has already explained it in detail ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I0UMG3iVYZI.html

The custom PCB is very nice to use because once you get it on the board you don't need as much heat to replace the capacitors if you ever need to. Personally I like to install pcb and then install the components afterward.

I personally would not go into that much effort to fix a phat ps3 if it wasn't a backwards compatible model. The one you have in this video isn't backwards compatible, so I would just keep it around for spare parts. Provably even swap a bwc mobo into that nice white case though

It's just a flux inside a syringe. Then I use my soldering iron and hot air station to remove the TOKINs.

This isn't a "TTL chip" TTL means "transistor-transistor level" it's a voltage standard (+5V), the chip itself is a common UART to USB transceiver. It using serial communication.

Hello, ive got an backwards compatible ps3 in working state, ive got the syscon error log from ps3toolset, it has multiple 1001 errros, after cleaning the console (not deliding) and speding some time on power on, the console suddenly after normal shut off, didnt even goes to stand by mode (red light). after changing 2 power cords, the light pop in! Booting the console and got YLOD! after several times of turning off and on, i dissebly it again, and reassebly, the console boot up!!! Ive check again the syson and i got 3003 error! The console working normally without ylod (again). till i get it to local electronic store to change the NEC TOKIN Capacitors. Could the problem be those NEC TOKIN?
@hardwarerepair200
@hardwarerepair200 3 месяца назад
The combination of 3003 and 1001 makes it very likely to be the NEC TOKIN near the CELL processor. Replacing the NEC TOKIN should be able to fix your console.

10% dos aparelhos são concertados com essa técnica... porem muito o problema é na bga dos processadores ou ate mesmo curto circuito ns linha do 12v.

Hi. I have phat model CECHL with ver-001 board. My case is: no image (both channels), no entry to recovery mode, but indicator lights green. And no power on usb ports. Is it nor issue, and what can i do to fix it? PS: i don't know console history from previous owner. Does Rs232rl and syscon errors check helps me ?
@hardwarerepair200
@hardwarerepair200 29 дней назад
It sounds like GLOD to me. It's very likely that the RSX is dead. Yes, Rs232rl can tell you if this console has any issue related to RSX.

I bought a non-working CECHA01 online hoping to fix it and I’m over my head. It has the GLOD. It turns on and runs fine, but there is no video output view HDMI or composite, just a black screen on the tv. I wish I knew of a place in the Silicon Valley to take it for repair. 😢
