The burnout thing is real. Everyday I feel a surge of insecurity, imposter syndrome and frustration in how dumb I am when encountered with bugs at job.

As an introvert and beginner freelancer, I face the issue of loneliness a lot. When you acknowledged the same, I really felt very relieved that a successful person like you also have felt the same. Thanks a lot for the video! The isolation and loneliness was especially true for me. If you just work alone and pretty much don't connect with anybody, it can mess with your head after a certain amount of time. I tried to live like this for over 3 months and found out that I really need to balance it out. We need some kind of a real connection, it's like food and water for us. We actually need it to survive, it's a basic human need.

As a 15 year dev (yea I'm getting old) I really appreciate your videos and you are one of the only channels I still pay attention to because you are real. - "A day in the life of a software developer" ... "How to get a job at a FAANG". I am so tired of those types of videos because 99.99999999% of companies are not FAANG (although they do act like it for the interview process) and you are dealing with all of the things you listed here. As a developer who has worked at many different types of companies, most of my time was not spent writing code but rather explaining things to non-techie, dealing with bugs from some YOLO dev watched a video on function currying and now tries to shoehorn it into everything they do no matter what etc etc etc. Anyway, end of my half-assed rant - good video!

The constant learning is something I struggle with. It's really unrealistic to have to do this along with a full time job (unless you're a freelancer and can set your own hours). I've had at least a few jobs ask me to learn a lot of technology in my free time as a requirement for the job, on top of working overtime. I think companies need to figure this out or they're going to either lose devs, or burn them out. I've suffered burnout at every single job I've had since graduating college. Either I've just gotten unlucky or this is a systemic issue in the software industry.
@huuhhhhhhh
@huuhhhhhhh 2 года назад
In that scenario, it seems that learning should be something done during work hours. Sure, there's always somethings you'll learn in your freetime that you may apply at work, but if it's a job requirement (outside or grad/internship roles where it might be slightly different) it should be done on company time. If the company want to inovate and grow, they need to invest.

@@huuhhhhhhh Absolutely agree! Unfortunately many companies that I've worked at don't feel the same way. Companies should train their workers.

No matter what kind of personality you have, the best advice I've ever learned in any career I've had is to "swallow your pride". Never be afraid to ask for help. None of us will ever know everything, and others always know something we don't. Also, just talking to someone about a problem you're trying to solve will usually cause you to think of something that solves that issue. Even if they don't know what you're talking about. I've been programming since 1986, and I learn something every day from others.

@@TraversyMedia Man somedays its got me so depressed. I left an whole industry to persue this for the last 4 years (college, online courses, udemy, youtube, everything) and im at the point were I can barely pay my rent and put food on my table for my kid. I keep grinding and applying to jobs, and I'm now applying for everything possible to get something. If I see a job position with a stack with one part of their stack I'm not familiar with that well I go back to the drawing board (like C# and .NET or whatever) just so I feel okay with life. Basically what I'm saying is after spending 4 years doing this I wonder why I did it because I've never felt so kicked to the curb so to say with my skill set. I know someone else is getting the job over me and there could be reasons for that (maybe I just suck) but man I cant wait for someone to throw me a bone cuz man I'm sure I wouldn't disappoint.

Maybe your resume needs to be improved? Maybe you're in a highly competitive environment (like a major city) and need to commute or move to a place with less competition? With 4 years under your belt you should have a decent portfolio. Certainly enough to land you a junior dev position. Lost a friend because they were upset that I wouldn't meet their deadline despite doing the project as a favor and never promising anything. Not even an explanation on my mental health regarding the work needed in such timely fashion was enough to preserve them as the close friend I once thought they were. There was also a moment of clarity when I recommended them to do X and Y for their design, only to find out the person they brought on to finish the project implemented X and Y despite them turning down my recommendation and overlooking best practices. Big oofs, but you live and learn and live some more hopefully. I try to be more assertive these days but not to the point of being an asshole, unless the client can only understand that sort of nature (we avoid those clients as much as possible.) Aside from that, I've been lucky and learned early on to always double my estimates for all clients or managers. The volatile nature of said clients/managers when it comes to needs or missing info almost always ends up pushing the scope, even for the simplest tasks. That's golden advice for anyone starting out.

From the first week where I found out the previous team of 4-6 devs all left angrily and never asked a single question during the Cascade CMS training aka the only training videos I was given, to the complete set of SCSS files that they deleted before they left that no one had a backup of, this work can be extremely frustrating at times but you have to see the positives. For example, in deleting files and getting crappy training, they left me with a blank slate to get new training and create all new CSS/SCSS for the site. Of course, I might not ever get time to write all of that stuff myself, but I know where I'll point the front-end devs when we hire them.

In my last job I was supposedly given the opportunity to learn some new tech. The client had a different idea and I got kicked off the team. Didn't do anything significant at all. Got put on a React project without knowing any React. The other team member said a task would take 20 mins and the boss asked her how long it would take me, she said a couple of hours. She had no idea of my abilities, skills or experience or lack thereof of React. I'm thinking how long is a piece of string. Needless to say that didn't go well. I messaged the boss saying this is like throwing mud at the wall and hoping it sticks. I honestly don't know how anyone with a family can survive this industry. Expected to churn out code all day and keep your skillset up to date on your own time. Companies that are interested in developing your career are probably the best ones. Sadly these seem few and far between. Digital Agencies are probably the worst type of company to work for.

@@dtb8008 Rather than list specific companies as they may have changed since my time there I'll offer you some general advice and things to look out for. 1 - sales people running technical companies imo should be a red flag. They tend to take the sale, promise the Earth and dump it on you, sink or swim. 2: companies with a broad tech stack, you may not get the chance to hone your skills in a specific area and risk being pulled into different projects with different tech stacks depending on staff retention. 3 - General office politics, it's unavoidable. 4 - My impression of non tech managers is if someone leaves then they view replacing a developer like replacing batteries, they don't understand how skills and experience can vary from developer to developer. Also the knowledge of specific projects leave when the developer leaves, new dev now also has a learning curve which managers may not understand. Does this help at all?

I worked at a company that imposed a deadline to create two pipelines, reverse proxy an old site, create a new landing page that is markdown editable for content writers, configure new namespaces in new Kubernetes clusters, build and deploy a new design system to jfrog Artifactory, DUE in TWO WEEKS!!!!! This is a well known company with highly intelligent management who know what they are doing. People know better than this.

Just wanted to add a comment here to say thank you for all you do and all the content you put out Brad. I have been a web developer for 13+ years and am finally taking the time to go through your Udemy courses I purchased over a year ago. I am in the middle of the HTML/CSS course and am learning / understanding better so many things I either glossed over or ignored in the past 13 years. Specifically animations and CSS grid. I have a constant feeling of imposter syndrome as many devs do, but your content and consistent openness about the challenges developers face every day (not to mention the candid story of your path to becoming a web dev and the challenges you've overcome) continue to be hugely motivating for beginners and veterans alike. I am constantly recommending beginning web devs on Reddit to follow your channel and Udemy courses to shave YEARS of the learning curve. I really wish I had had your content as a resource when I started in this industry. I would be light years ahead of where I am now and probably have much fewer gray hairs. Thanks so much for every minute of content you put out. It is very appreciated by so many.

Been there with all of them. It's good to even point them out, so that viewers don't think they are the first, or maybe alone with these things. Good content. Many thanks.

I do freelancing & it's difficult to keep up with everything man. dealing with clients, working the whole day/night. I don't get enough time. always feel like 24 hours is not enough. Even if I go outside or hang out with friends but clients always holding me back, loneliness is getting worse day by day. Mental & physical health has already gone quite far. Sometimes I feel like Office Job is better. Which helps you make some good habits or responsibility & discipline. People also respect office jobs more. but an office job kind of takes the freedom away. This world is not for happiness but to survive as long as you live & for your next generation. :)

Yo man good content! However can you fix the problem with the discount codes for your Udemy courses? The ones that you provide on your site don't work, I've tried all of them, I always get "The coupon code entered is not valid for this course." I wanted to buy 6 of them but paying 85$ each is too much.

I jumped in here to whine Brad. First, you are hands DOWN my favorite teacher since jumping back into dev (haven't been here since 2002ish) and I thoroughly enjoy your style. That said, I bought my first course from you on Udemy and I'm in Task List, Modern Javascript... The course states, no frameworks, etc... and I get it, no react, anguilar, view, etc... But? For my first project, you through in Materialize.css (I haven't used this, don't know a thing about it) and JQuery, which these days you state "this isn't needed anymore, and Materialize.js... First, I have to ask, do you have any plans to update this course, second, I'm assuming you use materialize to avoid writing all the CSS necessary to pull off the UI however, anything you can point me to to learn materialize? Also, this project includes materialize css and js. The statement in the course outline "no external libraries" isn't true. I have to say, my most common frustration so far? Html, CSS, Javascript. Cool, I can wrap myself around that. However? Not long after getting into each, you find no one is using them as they are written. They are chucking in bootstrap, etc.. for html, SASS/Etc... for CSS (seriously I'd just rather write css then learn a framework/pre-compiler? wtf? for css) then js, well jesus that really leaves the planet... That was cathartic. I get the "black box" thing when it comes to classes, etc.. I even understand what frameworks can bring to the table, etc... However, per you and everyone else, my intentions were to avoid ALL OF THIS, till I could write my own stuff with vanilla html, css, js. Your course, awesome, digging it, first project, I've got four links to external libraries that? Well the only one I know ANYTHING about is font-awesome because well, you use it in all your CSS videos on here.... My biggest irritation with the course is by including materialize, I'm asking myself every thirty seconds is this a "materialize" thing or is it vanilla... It's Monday, it's been a long day as I sit down to learn more. This, pissed me off. Yes, I'd like some cheese with my wine. I wanted, native, basic, html, css, and js in this course. I'm getting it, but this threw me for a loop. Thanks. Edited to add: What I expected from this course, project was, was you to whip out some of your standard pages (aka, html, css grid, etc...) then for us to chuck in some js to populate those tasty page designs with content....

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) "... It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement." (Hebrew 9:27) On the day of Judgement, unforgiven sins will be punished in hell: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23) You need a Savior, "...for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners ..." (1 Timothy 1:15) " ... in Him we have redemption through His Blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace. (Ephesians 1:7) *"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16)* *If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord , and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)* Repent and pray to God in Jesus' name, tell Him that you're a sinner and you are sorry for your sins. Say Jesus, please become the Lord of my life. Tell Him that you believe that Jesus Gave His life on the cross for your sins and Rose up from the dead on the third day. And that He is alive forevermore. Call Jesus into your heart. Ask Him to wash your sins with His precious blood. Give Him your life today and He will save you, And you will be given the authority to become a child of God

Hello Brad Traversy I've known your channel since 2018, when I watched your full stack developer guide. But funny thing is, I haven't gotten any job, I've kept learning and learning all that I possibly can. But whenever I apply for a job, the requirements are almost always beyond my current skillset. At this point, I've become cynical at learning new technologies, because I see no point in spending months trying to master a particular technology and then like a year later, nobody wants what you have to offer. I've started looking for jobs at Upwork, spent almost all my "connects" but still no client ever responds 🤣🤣

My biggest frustration is coming from a technical support background where I pride myself in delivering fast and excellent resolving support, becoming a developer and then logging support requests with companies like PayPal because their integration broke yet again and then find out that their SLA is 7 days... 72 hours if it's important. Jesus Christ... My SLA is 5 minutes for initial response and 2 days at maximum for follow up responses and that's just to take weekends into account...

Other people ruined my physical health. The only reasons I leave my home are gym and groceries. Programming is a blessing for me. I am never leaving my home. I kinda hate people. As for learning new code.. I don't know what to say. I've been working as a programmer for 18 months and I never saw new stuff in their code... Weird. Soon I will move to Amalfi Coast. 5000 people town. Perfect. Few people and lots of swimming spots.

Like finding a variable with 3 'l's instead of 2 that breaks only for 1 particular situation? Like finding out the previous person did not account for leap years in very specific report code? lol There are so many 'bang my head against the wall wtf' moments in my career omg the 'tests and comments' section had me rofling... I've never worked at a place with good tests or comments, but I stick with startups. At startups: trying to balance keeping things going, moving forward AND keeping up to date on new stuff is basically impossible.

Hey Brad, I am working as a teacher in a school, but i want to change my career now and want to focus only in Software Development. I have been learning Front End and Back End stuff... The main concern I have is that I am 35 years of age now, so will I have any job opportunities at this age coz I don't have any experience to show in this domain ( since I was working in a school as a teacher) and my age is not of a fresher to apply for freshers jobs.. Any advice or suggestions ? Or any experience you can share....

What do you do when you get bored from doing the same thing over and over? I don't know if it's because of the work I've been doing recently or because I'm bored of software development in general. I know that when I first started out in the company, I was learning a LOT. Like my growth was exponential, but now it feels much slower. I don't know if that's the reason behind my boredom, but I do know that I absolutely love coding though.

I'm a beginner, the frustrations that i think are actually frustrating would be Not understanding how to execute the work, not able to think properly and getting brain freezed at work. For professionals, there's no need to get frustrated with deadlines! You know the work, you do it. Just let them know how much time it would take and work accordingly. That's it

3:42 - I have worked with people with little coding experience. My opinion is: it is not about if the person has coding experience, which could be nice, it is about how good a leader they are. Trust is fundamental, they should trust somehow you are telling the truth on how hard things are. I have worked with unreasonable people, and it is bad, pretty bad.

Non developer managers.. It is so hard explaining stuff to them, they just can’t understand because they did not experience developing, I think technical leads can do the product management so well
