Interesting chassis construction there. Back and front panel area stapled / screwed to the top/side one. Makes production easier i guess. Looks sturdy enough :) Nice drive in these amps. Thanks for sharing!

I have a couple of old CD60 combos. I'm surprised they don't get more love, they sound great. I used F&T caps in the power section. One of mine had a weird oscillation on the lead channel, turned out it was a bad filter cap on the preamp board. These things are nearly 40 years old, so anyone who owns one should really replace the electrolytics. I had one blow up on the power supply board, it sprayed cap goo all over everything inside. A lot easier to change the caps instead of cleaning all that gunk if one blows. Took me the better part of a day to get everything clean.

Anything older than 15 years would do well to have the power filter caps changed. Over 30, it’s a must. These have a very particular sound to them that’s akin to the Mesa Mark series amps and they’re not everyone’s cup of tea. Replacing the speaker with a good quality replacement helps them massively.

Used to have A CD60 which I used either with a fender 1975 Tele custom and a 1978 LP. and a number of boss pedals back in the day late 80s other band member used to complain it lacked warmth and sounded brittle as gig and or rehearsal continued no matter the setting used so I ended up selling in the 1994 as I had purchased a Fender 100watt (The Twin) which weighted a ton I might add This was the not the hand wired traditional model twin but for some critics the not so liked Red knob model. Mine had black knobs fortunately which I still have his amp to this day. Thanks for the clip it brought back a few memories.

Thank you for this. I bought one of these about 5 years ago. Had the the cd60 when I was a teen. So far it’s been my favorite tone from an amp.

We’re currently rebuilding a CD60 that was destroyed by someone previously. New transformers and everything.

i think steve farris of Mr Mister. He came to the music store i was working at in Lakewood, Ca. Al Kalie Music. We had the whole Signature line in 1984. The Dean Markley rep called to let us know that steve ferris was interested in the CD 120 combo and the CD120 full stack. Apparently he must have picked one up. I have the CD120 combo 1 12" i have 4 6L6GC mullards with 3 12AX7. Great amp very loud and heavy.

The only downside of these amps is the speaker. They sound very boxy but with a good quality replacement, they really come alive.

@@drgearaustralia dean markley offered an EVM 12L as an upgrade which made the amp even heavier.

It was the 80s, everything had an option for EVM12Ls! The single largest cause of hernias throughout the decade amongst musicians and road crew.

I was for a long while, until I had to get a new fuse for it and he never shipped my order and hasn’t had stock in god knows how long. They’re not an easy value to come by and it’s been without current measuring capability for over 2 years now. I lean on the Fluke more so because I’ve at least got the fuses if I need to.

I have this amp and mine seems to be getting very hot! So hot it burned out a fuse. I replaced it and it’s working again. Any idea why this would do that? Also I want to recap it. Can you tell me what caps to get?
@drgearaustralia
@drgearaustralia 2 года назад
Fuses don’t blow for no reason. Chances are if the tubes are red plating or running well over what they should, there might be a bias issue or the tubes are dead. There could be any number of issues with the amp. As for the caps, just match up the values of the caps inside with modern F&T or higher range IC caps.

@@drgearaustralia thank you! How can I bias this amp? Is there something on the board I can turn? Also where did ya get the schematic for this amp? My friend can work on amps and he was asking if we could get it

Lol In the day was more expensive than a mesa .they are rare as rocking hourse shit I have one speaker fucked up and replaced it with a an evm12l tubes are groovetubes by memory 6l6 and 34s it screams from what I have researched there is less than a few hundred in the world .few gifted to guys like clapton doobies ect was a feature amp in Guitar player magazine in the day .but no one could afford them more expensive than mesa thus is why they didn't sell to many but in saying that I would easily compare as I just cranked mine up after many years and reaffirm why it would piss off the neighbourhood l

Bad idea using IC caps as replacements. Big no no.
@drgearaustralia

IC, like basically every company that made caps during the capacitor plague, suffered abnormally high failures due to the electrolyte. A company of that size, selling that many capacitors to not just amp manufacturers wouldn’t exist if there was a universal failure rate above the normal. The Fender and Peavey amps that suffered from leaking IC branded caps were generally of this period and were a low price version the companies bought to cost cut every cent they could. We’ve replaced hundreds of caps a year with IC branded caps and not had an abnormal rate of failure. Then again, we don’t buy the cheapest ones they have. We’ve yet to have an amp return in 5 years that we installed IC caps in that have failed.

I have this amp and it gets REALLY hot. I know it’s Texas here but it got so hot it burned the fuse. I replaced the fuse and it’s working again. The 2nd from the left 6l6 tube on mine seems to be burning hotter then the others. Besides that it works. What could be causing this?

@@mAnTuLa87 That sounds like a bias problem or a power tube. You should have it looked at by a tech.
