Dean: "I think I did great by showing up."

This really was the end of Martin and Lewis. Dean's face say's it all, he really was not happy to be there doing the show. Thanks for uploading this. 👍🥰

Dean should have at least gotten to sing the song without Jerry talking through it. Dino was the King of Cool, and why they did have a great run together, Dean was great as a one man show for sure!

In the prime of their teaming up there was no act better than M&L but as time went on it was time to call it and end especially for Dean. Fortunately Dean did very well after their break up. Both did very well indeed!

I’m on Page 242 of Jerry’s book and I think this is the interview he’s talking about. “At one point, the Today Show interviewed us, live, at the Club. There’s a kinescope of that segment and it’s painful to see: Dean and I can hardly bear to look at each other.”

Yes, that's the one. Emotional times for the both of them. We allude to it, and reference Jerry's book, in the upcoming issue of our magazine.

This is painful to watch. There is another video recently uploaded of their last Vegas act in March of 1956 and they seem to be working very well together, for the most part, until, at the end, Jerry Lewis starts in with a self-pitying rant of their almost breakup. Dean, in back of him, tries to make light of it. Here, Lewis is just insufferable, while Dean deftly fends off his obnoxiousness, particularly Lewis's comment about his supposedly failed solo singing career. This is the Jerry Lewis that became increasingly unfunny, bitter and self-important as the years went on. According to Norman Lear, who wrote for Martin and Lewis on The Colgate Comedy Hour, Lewis's egoism was the match that torched their partnership. They probably could have continued, somehow, to work separately, and occasionally reteam for specials or films that would have been blockbusters. Instead, Lewis had a run of some good pictures, before petering out. While Dean, who was both a first class singer AND comic (and also an often outstanding dramatic actor), became the more beloved and important star. If you watch another video on here, outtakes from a 1972 Dean Martin Show, you see why. No ego at all. Just self-effacing humor and pure class. The great actor and director Orson Welles recognized this back in the Martin and Lewis days. "It's Martin," he said, who was the real genius of the act.

Too much jerry's talking, too hard for Dean to stand all that.

Poor Dean didn't stand a chance once Jerry went full throttle. Dean is conspicuously and understandably absent from the end line up too!

You know the split was not all Jerry. I'm so tired of people thinking that because it was both of them. Jerry did things he shouldn't have done but so did Dean. He was not all innocence. These two were the best there ever was together and that's why it's so hard to watch. Dean wasn't into this and neither was Jerry. They both just seemed uncomfortable and really hurt and they really were

What Jerry does here to get attention is really disgusting.
