I really liked John Wayne's roast. RIP to all these legends, I discovered them recently only to find out that most of them are gone, except Ruth Buzzi and Rich Little.
John Wayne told Dean Martin, may you live forever, and the last voice you hear be mine. It worked better the way Sinatra did his take on that same premise. He used to say, may you live to be 100, and the last voice you hear be mine.
Immediately after this, John Wayne popped in unscheduled, unannounced on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Same tux and all. I just watched that clip posted today on youtube and Mr. Wayne mentioned the Dean Martin roast so I came here next. Here's the Carson clip: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iYU9bNxZXck.html
I heard that too about the Duke. The Dean Martin TV roasts were shot and filmed in Las Vegas and the Johnny Carson Tonight Show was filmed in Burbank, California, a suburb of L.A., at least a two hour or more drive from Vegas. John Wayne cannot have casually dropped in on Johnny's show after being on the Dean Martin roast being shot in Las Vegas, almost physically impossible.
Right after John Wayne's appearance here, he went on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson both shows in the same building, he popped in his show lol it's on RU-vid 3/6/23
The Dean Martin Roasts were taped at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson was taped at NBC Studios in Burbank, California.
You must be referring to Charlie Callis, a one rourine comedian who delivered his lines with a tic. He does sort of come off as a drunk and his effectiveness is related to his subject. An off and on funny guy.
