From a BBC Old Grey Whistle Test performance in 1973, John Prine and Dear Abby. I upload this video purely for information of like minded fans, do not own copyright, nor claim any revenue from it.
My late husband and I spent many an evening listening to John Prine records in our younger years and I can honestly say I have never heard an artist sing more meaningful songs and lyrics so easy to sing along with. He was one of the greats.
My husband used to sign and play every song he ever wrote in his band for 50 years He just passed in 2018 I love it when he say “ JUST MARRIED “ He said that to me on the way out of Church. “ Blue is my color of my blues. “
If I may speak for all John Prine fans ... We don't just like John Prine; we love John Prine. Thank God music is forever so we can forever sing John Prine songs. (We don't just listen to them, we sing right along too.)
My dad introduced me. I showed my daughter... When she was small we would sing it together... Now it makes me feel old...and sad. Now John died this year... double sad
Dear Abby, Dear Abby, I hope that you know Your words and advice I would never outgrow Every time that I thought that I knew what to do You would come along and tell me I’m screwed. Signed awakened
Awakened, Awakened, you have no complaint. You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't. So listen up buster, and listen up good. Stop wishin' for bad luck and knockin' on wood.
"Her hair up in curlers and her pants to her knees", you could see him almost cracking up! This is the first time I've SEEN him sing that song, long a favorite to listen to, cracks me up every time. To this day, I can't see a Dear Abby in the paper (yeah, I still read the paper) without flashing to this song.
John hooked me on dear Abby:) brought me so many years of joy 😊 I see him in the big band in the sky :) 😀 although he's sorely missed in this dimension we'll all get there :) he left us with a pile of music & fond memories ❤
Heather Leger did you know that it was about the advice column, in the newspaper, Dear Abby? The authors name wasn’t even Abby, her pen name was Abigail Van Buren...but her given name was Pauline Phillips. Abby is a cute name though
I listen to Mr. Prine all the time it seems anymore! What a talent. A legend. A humble poet. He will continue to be around forever! Ty Mr. Prine for sharing your stories with us.
Back in the late 70's I went into the Yale book store and saw this album by John Prine. I've always been one who loves the singer who tells a story like Jim Croce, Dr. Hook, Harry Chapin and especially John. I got a bunch of musicians together in my senior year of college and we got permission to play in the ratsceller on the weekends. It was awesome. I learned to play some of John's song (by ear) not too difficult as he basically uses 3 cords. But his stories were always something I could some how relate too. The other most endearing thing about John to me, was his awful voice, that crackling high pitched nasal tone seriously endeared me to his songs. I've heard other singers like Willie who I thought his voice was horrible but as I listened to him Willie grew on me through the years. But the voice got me mainly because I hate the sound of my voice so singing John's songs on the weekend was perfect for me. This song was one of the first one's I picked up. RIP John now you're with all the other great story tellers and I'll bet that concert is a great one.
I just gave a blank 36 piece jigsaw puzzle to wonderful CNA name Abby that works in the Assisted Living Facility where I live because she said she could draw. It will be donated to the actives department and will be for the residents to solve. I also designed her a keychain name tag for 3D printing and gave her the URL where she can have it printed for free. I had sealed the envelope with the note and I was about to put her name on it when I thought of this song. But I couldn't think of who sang it. So I came to RU-vid and was pleased and thrilled to see it was John. So now a cool young girl will have John to make her smile and show to her boyfriend. The line "Just Married" might make her and her boyfriend think twice. If you read this, GOOD LUCK Abby... sigh n'd, Just Happy... don don.
I picked up a guitar for the 1st time and started practicing a year ago at the age of 50. I have 8 songs that I know now--2 of them are John Prine songs. It's never too late to start. It's fun, even if I suck at it. My grandpa told me the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the 2nd best time to plant one is *today.*
I hope this note can find it's way to John. I thought he would enjoy this adult version verse to one of my favorite songs. Especially after his Daddy told him that "once you're dead, you're a dead pecker head". I'm still laughing. John's music has changed my life. Please tell him "thank you" from me. Adult verse: Dear Abby, Dear Abby, my pecker’s too long My girlfriend says that I’m hung just like King Kong… The operation has failed me and now I’m too short Now nobody’s happy, I’m sad to report Signed, Ole Stubby Ole Stubby, Ole Stubby, you have no complaint You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't So listen up buster listen up good Stop wishin' for bad luck and knockin' on (your) wood Signed, Dear Abby
