In each of the highlights, a travel was never called. Officials have already adapted to the speed and skill of the present day game. Yes, it needs to change 'officially' in the rulebook, but it begs the question, is traveling being called regularly where it has become an issue at lower levels? From your video evidence, clearly not.

My one objection to this is that most of these moves can still be done without traveling according to these rules if you just use different pick up methods and timing. For example, the swing step is almost always a travel in NCAA rules unless you do a single hand over top of the ball pick up to give time for your non swinging foot to leave the ground to avoid being the unintentional pivot. Same thing for a spin move - just use a single hand spin dribble and pick up the ball with the other hand after you get your intended pivot down. I will admit that some of the dunks are really hard to overcome according to these rules because you kinda have to two hand gather on a two legged dunk usually.

coach frikki, your a great basketball coach who’s helped me a lot. i do have to say that your wrong about this one though. the reasons most of these plays aren’t travels is because of when they gather the ball. in most of the clips what you called the first step was before they gathered the ball. what i mean by gathering is both hands on the ball, hand under the ball, or palming it. the steps aren’t counted until they have gathered the ball. if the ball is moving freely below their hand they can take as many steps as they want, and then have their 2 steps. hope you understand.

gather step in most of yours exemple (not the first one 0:40 wich leed to dunk for instance) is a good point (about 0,05 sec between the last dribble and the first step that's just common sens to allow it, we need to put in in slow motion to see the travel ) but in the way that it is actualy use in the NBA , and regrettably now in the euroleague and fiba , gather step is unfair, players use it like an extra step, even sometimes they took more than 3 step an it's benefits attack a lot , especially for players like giannis etc..
@TomatoTomato911
@TomatoTomato911 Год назад
gather step is not new. it just wasnt common in a normal dribble but happens way more often during a fast break when players are running full speed across the court it is humanly impossible to take just 2 steps without slowing down which defeats the purpose of fast breaks. refs only starts counting when player gains ball possession, not the moment the fingertip touches the ball.
@andone2950

@@TomatoTomato911 it's relativly new in europe basketball. i understand the idee of not slowing down the fast break when there is no one between you and the basket , no probleme with that , but it sometimes it 's use as a extra step for harden or giannis eurostep or during a fake pass on defender when the players going on his lay up yes that's the point of deesagrement , when did the players gains ball possession ? i guess it's when the players grabs it with his two hand ? so during this time laps (between last dribble and ball captation) is the players allowed to make any step he want ? ? does it not over advantage the attaque ? some exemple here if you want, more spécifically 1:18-1:32 it's a french vidéo but there is no need of translation 😅ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1zDhM2hAU3g.html

@@andone2950 in fiba it is actually allowed before the rule change. changing the rule takes many years so they finally made it explicit about the gather step. before that it was the norm to give the player 1 gather step, but if you go by the rule text you can actually have no limits on gather steps as long as the dribble is live (excluding palming) because the rule states dribble ended when ball comes to a rest on the player. Fiba just made it clearer than nba to avoid confusion because in NBA you can actually take few gather steps and end up with 5 steps after the last dribble and not get called, it isnt the ref error because the rule did not limit the number of gather steps a player can take before his dribble ended. as for ball possession it is always at the discreet of the refs. if refs see player gained control of the ball whichever foot on the ground is the pivot. in fiba a player can grab his own airball, but ref needs to agree it was a shot attempt, not a pass etc. if i start a dribble by throwing the ball to an empty place or error in passing and runs to the ball and touch it, it can either be a dribble or a self pass, so refs have to decide whether to let it go or call a violation. usually they let it go if player did not use up his dribble. go look up older nba/fiba footage. gather step whether receiving a ball or after a dribble has always been there, just not as obvious. even michael jordan uses it quite often.

Great video again Coach! I'd like to see a video similar to this one that tackles contentious rules that always cause arguments in pickup and that even refs sometimes get wrong. Oftentimes because the rule is different in different leagues. A few examples: 1) Catching your own air ball: NBA= travel. Other leagues = legal (provided that the ref believes it was a legitimate shot attempt) 2) The good old step through where you lift your pivot before shooting or passing. People incorrectly think you can only lift your pivot while jumping off both feet at the same time. However you're actually allowed to lift your pivot WHILE your non-pivot is still on the ground as long as you shoot or pass before your pivot makes contact with the ground again. It may look like an extra step but it's legal in all leagues. ru-vid.comUgkxHTM6R-ynwKS26PwIwHhQnHzJ-WfXdiNP 3) Recovering a fumble is always legal, even if it was during a shot attempt, or during while trying to gather after dribbling. For example if you're dribbling and try to grab the ball with both hands but it slips you can still recover it (even if it you had touched the ball with both hands). You can even recover a fumble if it requires that you take several steps and would otherwise be a travel. However if you had to displace your pivot to recover the ball you may no longer pivot after recovering it. Obviously the ref determines whether it was a legitimate fumble (as opposed to someone pretending to fumble to gain an advantage). Same in all leagues? videorulebook.nba.com/archive/legal-play-player-fumbles-ball-into-air-and-recovers-it/ 4) Alley-ooping to yourself off the backboard: I think this is legal in the nba. Not sure about the other leagues. 5) Ball bouncing on the side or top of the backboard (multiple times or even rolling on the top of the backboard) and then eventually falling back towards the inbound side: Inbound in all leagues? 6) Ball crossing over the backboard: always a out-of-bounds even if the ball didn't touch any of the supporting infrastructure. 7) Shooting the ball from behind the backboard. I think generally this is generally not allowed but might depend on the league? Maybe it's ok if the ball never travels "directly" behind the backboard 8) You're out of bounds and right before receiving a pass you're able to establish one foot inbounds. The other foot is still in the air. I think you're considered inbounds at this point. You don't need both feet to be inbounds. forum.officiating.com/basketball/23859-how-many-feet-establish.html 9) Saving the ball from going out of bounds and in the process stepping out due to your momentum. Then coming back inbounds and being the first to touch the ball. I think this is ok 10) Stepping out of bounds while dribbling the ball (but not while in in contact with the ball). This maybe be legal if you stepped out of bounds to avoid contact but wouldn't be legal if it was to gain an advantage? 11) Blocked shot: If both the shooter and the defender are in contact with the ball the whole time it's a jump ball. If the defender doesn't make contact with the ball the whole time but the shooter does it's a travel. If the shooter releases the ball (even for a split second) during the block, and grabs it back immediately, it's a new possession. 12) After gathering your dribble the ball makes contact with your defender unintentionally or intentionally (e.g. your moving with both hands and it incidentally makes contact with the defender and you drop it and grab it back immediately. Or you intentionally throw the ball on the opponents legs, back or head). Do you get a second dribble? In the NBA, for the unintentional case you definitely get a second dribble. In the intentional case it's unclear but you probably get a second dribble as well: NBA Rule 10 Section II: "A player may dribble a second time if he lost control of the ball because of: 2. An opponent touching the ball" It's not clear whether "lost control" includes the intentional case but I would argue that it does since you can't predict how the ball will bounce off an opponent, hence you lost control of the ball the moment it touched them, even if you intentionally threw it at them. However a foul will be called if the action is considered "unsportsmanlike" (Judgement call by the ref). I'm sure there are more! Maybe consider doing it in a tier list format (most to least common misconceptions) This one would be a real challenge but man would it helpful to have a single resource to point people to. You have the power to potentially single-handedly put an end to (or at least drastically reduce) recurring pickup disputes that never get resolved 😄.

I'm confused I thought the gather step was allowed at all levels. Like it's a common thing done even in hs I see it done all the time and most refs even know what the rule is. How is the gather step a travel if like pretty much no refs at any level call it, is it just a rulebook thing that nobody actually follows because it's ridiculous?

people who complain about gather steps are old heads or dudes that never actually play ball. It feels so unnatural to just do a 1 and 2 step. The gather step allows for fluidity in playing and making basketball moves.

The reason FIBA followed NBA is to make the sport easier and have more points, so more people would watch. That doesn't mean it should be the way to go. I don't see FIFA changing soccer rules so more people watch the game. Going from two steps to three steps makes the game too easy
@CoachFrikki
@CoachFrikki Год назад
Having a gather step is definitely the way to go. Do you really think that every single play in this video should be illegal? And nobody is making the case for 3 steps. You start counting after the ball gets picked up. The gather step doesn't count because you are still dribbling and you can't travel while dribbling.
@andresferrer7628
@andresferrer7628 Год назад
@@CoachFrikki many of the plays you showed were clean: pivot and second step. Basketball was a thing before the “gather” step, and players were able to spin, dunk, and score past the whole team, so the only need for a gather step is for more players to be good at the game, and for more points to be scored, ergo, just making the game easier. It is so much easier that nobody will let you complete the word “gather” in a street court before calling your travel and taking the ball from your hands

No, HS and college do not need to change this rule. Permitting extra steps gives the offense a distinct advantage and disadvantages the defense. The game is about balance between the two. FIBA just wants to be like the NBA, which is as fake basketball as you can get.
