Made by Film Australia 1975. Directed by Don Harley. Sponsored by the Department of Defence, this recruiting film presents with some humour the thoughts of one of a group of young soldiers who is writing a letter home. With so many suggestions of what to include, contributed by his mates ("Don't forget the football"... "Tell her how brave you are!"), he doesn't get beyond writing "Dear Mum."

So as a yank, you all down in Australia will find this funny, I stayed at Lavarack barracks in 2018. I'm with the us coast guard and we worked with the Diggers to provide security at PNG working of the HMAS Adalade. It was so much fun. Even stayed in the old barracks there.

I came across this by accident when searching for other info on RU-vid. The film was made 42 years ago. Makes most, if not all of us feel older LOL. I often wonder how all the other men are going that were in the film. So many memories and friends, too long ago. (Patto)

What were we thinking all that long ago? I had no idea that Wagga Wagga was that bloody cold when I did my recruit training in 1965 or that they would be forever on my back about the length of my hair, or twisted boot laces FFS.

It was 1975.....just after Vietnam. Gough had gutted the ADF and it wasn't in good shape. A lot of the career blokes had left for better coin, and the ones that were left knew they were now in a peacetime army that likely wouldn't see any real trigger time for many a year.

So what made it the army then? Green uniforms? Writing letters out field? Out of shape Sargent (I figured that was just artistic licence but I guess they didn’t even have PESA back then) I’m not seeing too many other differences.
