Dear Ubisoft - F*** You and your NFTs

Ubisoft has decided to push ahead full scale with its integration of NFTs. In January of 2022, executive Nicolas Pouard was interviewed by Finder, and that segment was extremely telling.
Ubisoft thinks that Gamers "just don't get it" They think that the community simply doesn't understand the value of NFTs, or Crypto tokens in gaming, and they believe that their own community should be completely ignored in favor of the "technology". In reality, gamers are well aware of what NFTs are, and they have absolutely no interest in seeing them in games.

yeah but your entire argument is just low-brow and frankly retarded. You don't like NFT's because you think they'll destroy gaming. I love NFT's because it opens up huge new opportunities for gamers and game-makers alike. God forbid that game-makers find a way to essentially stop piracy dead cold.

There is exactly one possible use of nft-like ksystems in gaming and that will never come into action. They should make the licence to a game a tradeable thing, which would be an nft. Then you could sell games you bought e.g. on steam when you want like in the old days of hardcopies. But that would be pro gamers and someone might not buy a new licence when he can get a "used" nft-licence. I mean, Steam could have made this possible at least on their systems for years without a blockchain.

One more thing: how creepy is it that so many of these large publishers have been complaining for decades about the used games market and actively tried to kill the used games market even for physical games but for some reason they're suddenly 100% on board with "gamers" reselling in-game items? You know there's something they're deliberately leaving out of the "conversation". Probably a bunch of things that "add value" only to their own revenue streams. Getting a cut of all further sales, cryptographically enforced DRM on all microtransactions, and the ability to simply confiscate anyone's items for "terms of use violations" that will be enforced through automation, are just a few of the reasons we know about. Just imagine all the shady crap they want to do that they're not admitting just yet.
@Teixas666

that's basically what it is. they want ot leverage blockchain Tech into their DRM schemes, and if they get to make money on it, it would be insane for them to not try.
@PipoZePoulp
@PipoZePoulp 2 года назад
And there are two secondary markets; the one Ubisoft's CEO is trying to sell you, where you resell old skins and baubles ... and the market Big Tech is trying to set up, where they're trading your data. You have three guesses where the big money lies. In this digital age, asking "Who knows my data?" is paramount.
@aleks5405
@aleks5405 2 года назад
It's simple. The creator of NFT usually gets 10% from any transaction of that NFT. So, if Ubisoft sells an NFT to player and that player sells it to other player after using it, Ubi gets free cash. So an NFT that's resold for multiple times within community gives Ubisoft additional constant revenue.
@actofaggression8060
@actofaggression8060 2 года назад
Yeah well, if you have a resale market for games, there are less games published and thats a huge part of their market share. But if they can monetize us even more by making microtransactions etc have a fictive value bound to the NFT hype they can profit more. Because people will then by the microtransactions as speculative objects and therefore there is a higher amount of habituation so the market increases more than with their yearlong attempts to shove microtransactions down our throats ...
@darrelsteinberg4127
@darrelsteinberg4127 2 года назад
@@aleks5405 This is it. Reselling an entire game? That's very little money per transaction and prevents publishers from getting the full amount from a new game. Items WITHIN a game? They force you to buy the new game (100% profit) + cycling extra cash on the inside (items). They're not against a secondary market, they're against not making money off of that market.

This guy reminds me of an incident I saw years ago. A friend of mine owned a restaurant and prided him self on the quality and portions of his food, over his profit margins. One day a guy came in and started to tell him how he was giving way too much for the amount he was charging and proceeded to tell him that he can condition his customers to accept less and even pay a little more. He assured him that they would be upset at first but would eventually get over it and come around to accept it. You know , just a sleazy d-bag. My friend told him it was about the customers and his wanting to provide value. He finally told the guy that he should probably just finish his meal and go. Mind you , the consumer isn't totally blameless in these kinds of anti-consumer practices. If its accepted , the boundary just gets pushed further and further out a little at a time, until their customers are acclimated to it, then push a little further.

Giving up on Ubisoft is not a great loss for me game-wise anyway. I actually had to check, I own exactly 7 games on Uplay and I guess that is already too much. Not at least because they basically re-sell the same game with slightly different looks time and time again anyway. Far Cry 3 was nice, Far Cry 4 had it's moments, but let's be honest, it's not only basically the same game and even the same story, but a big shiny number of mini-games with very little real gameplay, at least none that is not repetitive like hell. And I've got Far Cry 5 for the PS4 for five bucks from a bargain bin and oh god, what a mess this game is. Watch Dogs was a really great game, despise it's problems, but Watch Dogs two was a childish dumpster fire which shined with dialogue like 'Let's go, you penises! ... Hehe, he said penis!' and the third game went full woke, so... nope. And the Assassin's Creed games? Well, they are not my cup of tea anyway, not at least because I've tried to play one or two on the console, I actually liked 'Black Flag', but gave up on it, because the nonsensicel, non-changeable controller scheme in combination with the often awkward camera and the tendency of my character to constantly decide to cling to the most nonsensical objects made me give up on it. There is really not much Ubisoft has to offer to me right now. Oh, I still play _tons_ of their games, but those are quite old ones that come without any 'platform' or DRM.

Important distinction between CSGO skims and NFTs: To create a successful classical skin/item market you need a long lasting game that has an active player base for years because nobody will trade these items when the expectation for this game is to be abandoned within a year or two. This requirement does not exist for NFTs: they are not bound to any game servers and will continue to exist even after the game is dead. So you can expect the crypto boys to buy NFTs even for games that are bound to fail.

The customer is also incredibly stupid which is why pre-orders are still a thing.

@@GUMMRUCHK The thing is, it doesn't literally mean the customer is "right." It just means don't tell your customers they're wrong. It's bad business.

This reminds me of the problem with ingame lootboxes (including black online markets) and priced mods. Even though no one wanted it and started with major backlash, it settled and was "excepted" / ignored at the end. Now the same might happen with NFTs. This attitude / exspectation towards customers / (hardcore)gamers by the big game publishers is showing some concerning patterns.

Oh look another post that has NO IDEA what they're talking about what you think NFTs are: more microtransactions what NFTs are, what they have TOLD YOU THEY ARE: A way to allow you to sell your DLC and microtransaction items from mystery boxes to other players, as well as your digital games. But no, don't bother reading a freaking THING about NFTS, just keep being lied to on twitter. Jesus christ.

Everytime executives open their mouths they reveal how homogenous and banal corporate greed is. I'd almost pity them if they weren't so needlessly parasitic.

In short: What we want to be able to do is to be able to buy a single player experience, for which we just buy the game, and we can play it without having to ask the daddy company (we bought the good from) if we can still play the darn thing. We need to force all these CEOs to watch videos on what happened with games like Diablo 3, when it launched on PC. They keep speaking as if NFTs are creating this brand new secondary market that never existed before. We know darn well what secondary markets do to gaming. We just happened to experience and witness it for a whole decade, consider its benefits compared to its issues, and we came up with the educated decision that it's crap. No. It's the CEOs that have no idea what a secondary market will do to gaming because they don't experience themselves, and if any make a statement like that, they already showed their ignorance of the subject.

I don't need to see the video, the title alone gets an upvote edit: and then I clicked play, perfect first sentence by UEG.
