It will only be a matter of time before Epic Games start to capitalize on their win against Unity and other big 3D game engine companies, by increasing their prices in the future. Remember about their drama in the 2000s where Epic was deliberately withholding features and support for UE third party licensees so that Epic's first party games would look and run better? Another notable wrongdoing was their intentional breach of contract with Apple refusing to pay the stipulated percentage for in-app purchases in Fortnite. No one has an issue with them making money. In fact I’d like them to make more to make the engine better. The issue is the fact that it changed arbitrarily. Even changing to games already released. Would be much more understandable if it was % of revenue and only to projects made in Unity 2024+. So devs can make an educated choice at the beginning of their project that will last until the end. Then if the new tools are worth it, and the new terms acceptable they will upgrade. The issue is the automatic opt in to any future whim, reasonable or otherwise.

Godot 4 is shockingly easy to learn with experience in Unity, made the switch a while back when I saw how much better 4 is at handling 3D than the previous versions. The improved C# support makes things very easy to jump the fence if you're used to writing scripts for Unity. The built in support to use .blend files without having to export and then import into Unity is a dream, even works real time if you save a change to the .blend file in blender it automatically updates it in the scene you're using it in in Godot... can't even express how great this is for designing objects, maps, enemies, whatever when it lets you test it real time before you do the final export once you know it's how you want it. This isn't to say it's perfect by any means but after 3 months of learning it I'd say I'm just as comfortable as I was in Unity at this point and really don't miss anything about it

Also, consider the legal ramifications of different terms of service. Imagine a developer making a game on an older version of Unity (which is a lot of them because updates can destroy your current projects) and then releasing it, only to be charged fees under a new TOS he never read or signed. One thing you will find is that a lot of your investment in time isn't lost. The principles are all the same. Game engines don't diverge that much. At work (I work in a game development company specialising in tech) - I will routinely switch between engines based on the clients need. I'm currently working on an in-house game engine for a large Japanese client. Next year, it may be UE5. And I suspect soon, we'll get a lot of people coming to us to port Unity games to some other engine. There is some friction to learning a new engine - but your investment in time is going to be a lot lower the second time around. You can probably be productive within days. Don't sweat it - don't think of the problem in specifics, think about it in concepts.
@rob-rendell
@rob-rendell 10 месяцев назад
It must be very discouraging, but remember: downloading another engine and having a play isn't a commitment. If you feel trapped and frustrated with the current Unity situation, you could download Godot and/or Unreal, and spend a weekend just working through some tutorials while thinking about how that engine's features might apply to your game. Don't think about everything that you'd have to do all over again, just pick one thing about your game you think is cool and try to get that bit working in another engine. As @zoeherriot says, you'll find that a lot of the underlying fundamentals from your Unity learning will apply to other engines, even if the specifics are different. You can always go back to working on your game in Unity later if you decide the alternatives aren't working for you.

I feel for you man 😢. This is the reason why I now also have open source apps in my resume. Apart from other 3D apps I learned Blender (specifically because the proprietary ones always came up with this type of BS). Blender became so popular because of that and has improved super fast. With game engines is the same. It doesn't hurt to have some experience with an engine like Godot in your resume. Even if it's not your main engine, having experience with it will always keep you safe from BS like this from Greedy Corporations who will always put profits first to milk their user base to oblivion. Try C# version of Godot for a few weeks. Follow some small tutorials and you'll feel better and more secure (even if it doesn't become your main engine you'll definitely feel better) 😊

Perhaps learning the base engine won't be too much of a transition if you're doing File > New Project today. But if you're two years into a project, or if you've built it around one or more of the many excellent frameworks in the extremely mature Asset Store such as Gaia or Corgi, then you're in trouble. Unreal is not really an option for me as I prefer to have 4-5 old macbooks and iMacs dotted around the house that I can jump on at any given moment, and that really needs a dedicated desktop machine with a decent GPU. While coming from Unity, Godot's workflows are just...weird. Learning a new language/API is the easy part, it's the other stuff - if your Unity project is heavy on Scriptable Objects/Addressables/DOTS/Jobs/VR, you've got to redesign everything from scratch to fit the Unreal/Godot approach.

@@kodaxmaxEither way if you've been doing it for 3, 5, or 10 years then by now it's second nature whether it was intuitive to begin with or not - you don't even have to think. Time spent looking up how a given engine handles X or Y is time not spent making the game. Godot failed my 'intuitivity' test almost immediately by referring to what I would describe perhaps as an 'object', 'entity', 'prototype', 'component' or 'prefab' as a 'scene'. So you create your bullet scene, attach it your gun scene, place that in your avatar scene and then place that scene in the scene scene before dynamically loading the data for the current cutscene scene into your scene scene.

Apple is in bed with Unity -- their Vision Pro's entire future depends on it. And they don't have another choice as the other major player is Unreal, but they are in a lawsuit with Epic. There's a high chance Apple will simply acquire them at a discount. Or maybe this WAS their plan all along, as Unity's execs mass sold all their shares days before they announced this idiotic business model. All seems very sus. I hope you and all other devs get together and help build Godot into a powerhouse so the industry is never held hostage by another monopolistic platform ever again.

dude this actually makes sense, there has been alot of uncovering of corruption and collaberation within companies and corporations where they get senior leadership plants into companies and then run them into the ground and then they get acquired by other larger entities for pennies on the dollar, would not surprise me if that is what is going on here. The leadership also sold off their stock holdings before making the announcement so this def smells of planned insider trading/hostile acquisition.
@Sipu79
@Sipu79 10 месяцев назад
They didn't, JR has over 3+ million shares, the few thousand he sold is just some auto-sell automation. He still holds over 3 million shares, which is a significant chunk.

@@ashamahee there's a lot of misinformation regarding the stocks floating online so it's good to be mindful of that. a lot of executive compensation is equity and they have very strict rules on how they can sell that equity and when. when you hear numbers like "50000 stock this year" it sounds like a lot if you don't understand that generally execs have massive piles of stock. These are peanut numbers. It's a very different situation if an exec suddenly liquidates a sizable chunk of their ownership of a company and those usually require SEC filings etc. because they are subject to insider trading rules.

"Eggs in a basket" as you say in the vid. I do think building/using other tools make you a more seasoned dev. As you switch between frameworks and engines you'll find that core concepts and fundamentals never change. I've worked off and on with Unity since 2014 and kind of glad to shut the book. I mainly work in the web world so I'm a big proponent of Babylon.JS over Unity's WebGL support. As far as languages go picking up C++/JS/GDscript just make you a stronger programmer long term anyway. To everyone worried about new engines/apis and what not, you got this. Spread wings.

THANK YOU FOR COVERING THE COERCIVE MONETIZATION ANGLE. So few people talking about the whole debacle mention/realize that perspective. This move was meant to force Unity developers to be more aggressive with our monetization methods. Afterall the CEO called devs who don't use microtransactions "F&$&ing morons". I cancelled my nearly 10 year pro subscription yesterday and I've been watching Unreal tutorials all day, no way I'd ever trust Unity again. To any devs reading this: EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of my fans and current players of my Early Access game were fully supportive and understanding of the decision to leave Unity and put the game on indefinite hold while I learn Unreal. If you feel scared or trapped, don't be. You CAN leave if thats what you want to do. I'm lucky I was in a position to do so. Goodluck everone

It must be very difficult for you and others who have devoted a lot of time into unity for this to happen. It makes me sad that this is happening because I was looking forward to be a part of that community but the community itself is now disappearing. Also, This is by far the best video I have seen discussing the topic and its different issues. - How will they track the installs and privacy concerns. - How the fees affect cheep and free games. - The problem is not with the fees, but with the decision itself and decisions like it. who says they won't make similar decisions in the future. - That the employees at unity are not really to be blamed, and that most of them love the engine and wants it to be better. Its clear the direction that the executives at Unity is heading is really worrisome, removing plus subscription, having to be online while using the editor. Its soo fucked up, but hopefully this will be better for all of us, after this maybe a new engine or tools for existing engines will get much better as demand increases !

Now all we need is a bunch of tutorials on how to use C++ for Unreal with things like Gamepads, User Interface and Generic Gameplay elements for Unreal Engine. Might even need tutorials on how to manage in-game data with database scripts, instead of the reliance on Unity's Serializable habits.
