Evasive brought me here! I'd like to add, as a black film nerd who grew up around black people, there is a such thing as "Black Famous". We know exactly who she is abdlove her for all her roles in the "separate cinema" that is black films, and particularly black comedies. There's lots of "blacktresses" that white people either don't know or only know from one role but we know and love and grew up watching. That's a different kind of conversation though
Definitely! I was so confused when the media was acting like KeKe Palmers first major claim to fame was in “Nope”. Trust me she was very black famous before then.
This exactly. I remember when my generation of Midwestern Girls was all about Pam Grier when she played Jennifer Beals sister on the L Word back in the 00's. I was always somewhere between biting my tongue and handing out DVD watching assignments. I'm a pop culture/current events nerd who grew up black, in the South with parents who experienced Jim Crow first hand, so black famous (and black history) is the foundation of everything I know about film, television, & music.
It’s funny, I had to explain this to my husband the other night because I was listing her filmography and the only one he knew was Scary Movie 😩 I’ve known her since childhood
It's the same thing with latinos. For the longest, Selena received no recognition or praise from the Whiteside or gringo side of the US. They were too busy hyping up JLo who looks racially ambiguous and is faker than implants. Selena looked so Mexican, so obviously latina. It was only until it hit the 20-year mark of the anniversary of her death that Selena finally started getting the recognition she deserves. She's been due, long overdue for the star on the Hollywood walk of Fame, to be considered among the greats and the Legends. Not just to the Latinos and other people that loved her and think she was great, but to everyone in the entertainment industry/such. Because of that, to me she's still considered underated. That may not be true in the Latino American community, because every year they always did something to celebrate Selena. So much so, that I've heard some Latinos say she's overrated. However, She's finally getting the recognition in her own country, She's barely been rated!
I love this video, but I wish you talked about Honk For Jesus, Save Your Soul. I saw that in theatres and she was absolutely snubbed for an Oscar for that, she was incredible
Yeah I remember when the Emmy nominations were announced, he tweeted how his nomination didn’t feel right bcus she was the star of the show and in his eyes she was more deserving and definitely robbed.
Chilee this is the second time Melissa McCarthy career have been compared to a black actress Monique did her interview with shannon sharpe where she said if she was white her name would be melissa McCarthy. Nothing against Melissa I love her but we got to call a spade a spade. But I’ve been calling Regina hall one of the most underrated actresses of the 21st century for a hot minute she reminds me a lot of Aubrey plaza, Thelma Ritter, Brittany Murphy and Whoopi Goldberg where comedic actresses diversify their talent and filmographies and prove everyone that they are the funny girl. Support the girls was the moment that proved that the industry and general public have underestimated her for so long. As a black person the racial double standards was always the factor behind my consciousness to why she’s underrated but your video perfectly explains my point. I also think there’s something to be said about black comedic actors/actresses or specifically working class black American actors/actresses who don’t come from prestigious acting school experiences are underestimated by both their white and black industry peers, this was a factor to why Monique have disliked and not supported by her black peers bc she was this plus size dark skinned stand up comedian who won a Oscar over black actresses who went juliard, NYU, Yale drama of school etc, we see this with the rise of black British actors in Hollywood and the reasoning for their success is bc they are “classically trained” they don’t come from comedy stages, vine, tik tok, IG, RU-vid or being in rap music videos according to directors like spike Lee, Ava dunvery, Lee Daniels, etc this underlying mixture of anti blackness, classism, xenophobia and low brow art eilitism is bizarre, when comedy is extremely hard and almost more impressed to be self taught or naturally gifted than it is to get their talent exclusively from prestigious Eurocentric acting schools, I think that’s another reason why Regina is not only under-appreciated over white actresses like Sandra bullock, Mellisa McCartney, etc but also fellow black actresses who came up besides her like viola Davis, Kerry Washington, etc.
Most Black people definitely recognize her as more than “that chick from Scary Movie”. Unfortunately, being a black female who’s mostly known for comedic work and also is seen as “sexy” in much of her work will limit how Hollywood is gonna view you.
She is literally one of my favorite actresses. I’m not even going to say one of my favorite black actresses because she is phenomenal and I’m glad to see credit finally given where it is due. Respectfully put some respect on her name.❤
Regina Hall’s comedic timing is criminally underrated and she perfectly adapts it into every single sub-genre of comedy she has played in. Every time she’s in a film, she’s my favourite part of it.
It's truly sad how a highly educated & gifted actress goes unnoticed throughout the movie industry. Regina was born for the movies. She deserves her recognition now!!
this video made me so emotional I’m so glad u made this. These type of analysis are so necessary. I am a black female musician and I go thru a lot in this industry. Sometimes it feels like you have to be “twice as good to make half of what the white girls make” (‘Scandal’ quote) or accept opportunities that are counter productive to your overall image and goals. Regina Hall deserves so many more flowers for her consistency, range, beauty, and class. Thanks for making this content
THIS VIDEO RIGHT HERE 🔥! She is so painfully underrated. Thank you for covering the complexities and nuances of race in Hollywood/media and how it affects a talented individuals reach to the masses and sadly, validation. I hope Regina feels seen and appreciated by your video 💗.
AHHHH I LOVE THISSSS!! THANK YOU so much for recognizing such a great talent that deserves far more love than she seems to get❤❤❤I've loved her since i was a child😊
I'm agreed with everything that you said. You hit on the nail on the coffin. Plus, I ❤ Regina Hall, that my girl, also, she made that Scary Movie franchise, (besides Anna Faris), so she definitely derives on getting her flowers, though! 💋💋😉😀🌹💐💐
11:13 had to pause it right there cause you "wuz cookin" bro! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 Man only 300+ subscribers is criminal! But that's not going to be for long! This channel has the potential to be one of my favorites and tops in the genre! Keep going, keep posting, keep coming with videos we didn't know we wanted (just keep making the videos you WANT to make because that's obviously how we got this banger!!) love it bro! And thanks for giving this goddess the recognition that she deserves!!!
i’m not tryna be funny or rude, shit or racist, but thank you for talking about black women. 2/3 videos have to do with black women and i love that. i just feel like everyone talks about the same celebrities and none of them are the talent ones 😣 give us our flowers because we genuinely deserve it.
Fun fact: Aaliyah was originally approached for the the role of Brenda, but turned it down because she felt it disrespectful as the character would be loosely based on Brandy’s character in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Brandy was one of her peers and, at the time, people were looking for any reason to start feuds between her, Brandy, and Monica as the three teen r&b/pop stars of the 90s. Aaliyah probably inherently knew this, which is why she most likely didn’t pursue the role. I’m glad that she turned down the opportunity because that role was made for Regina
She was also incredible in Honk for Jesus. Her character wasn’t really a good person but you felt for her. That last scene was an award worthy performance. She can really do anything.
I know I subscribe to your channel off of one video for a reason - - I was JUST saying how slept on Regina Hall is. I was watching about last night and support the girls is one of my favorite movies in recent years and her performance in Honk for Jesus is incredibly nuanced and complex. It would be wonderful for her peers, colleagues, and fellow artist to recognize her extremely agility and strong capabilities but alas… She doesn’t need the recognition but it would be very nice and more than deserved for somebody of her skill and prowess. So well said and so well studied. I’d like to say that the black community at large recognizes this but I can’t speak for everyone but I think we’ve championed her for always giving gripping, and compelling performances.
I remember she did an interview with Conan O'Brien in the early 2000s and that was how I remember her. Funny and sharp, carried Conan through some good stories of how her name is pronounced in Canada.
Black Monday was one of the funniest shows ever and Regina should definitely have been nominated. She has consistently been one of the best comedic actresses of all time. I also loved the movie Little even though she wasn’t in the whole movie (because her character became a little kid).
I really appreciate this video. She's one if ny favorite actress simply because she always plays her role to a T and I've always seen that drive/fight in her. She'll get her flowers one day
I hope Regina gets the recognition she deserves soon! It's a travesty how long Hollywood has been sleeping on her talents. No matter how big or small her role is in a film or show, she always commands the scenes and draws you to her characters. Maybe the new movie with Leonardo DiCaprio will finally catapult her into the Hollywood elites. And if i were Regina I would pass on doing the new Scary Movie. She's come too far to reprise that role. It would only continue to diminish all the other great performances she's had over the past 20+ years, and possibly hinder the roles she's offered in the future.
Thank you for this video! I also believe that Regina Hall is one of our greats that deserves more recognition. She gave a phenomenal performance in the film Honk for Jesus. It is a dramedy that highlights her dramatic and comedic timing. I would love your opinion on it!
This was so great! Regina is one of my favorite actresses of all time so I’m glad someone is giving Regina her flowers outside of the Scary Movie Franchise
Honestly I hope more black actors and actresses become content with being loved and praised by the black community. Fck trying to cross over. Fck an Oscar! Let’s celebrate the black award shows and hold them at a higher level than the Oscar’s. If other groups of people don’t want to accept
Not only is she my Birthday twin but she was my fiancé ls childhood crush ❤ she deserves endless love and flowers. I quote her Scary movie lines on a daily basis
If comedy was taken seriously she would be an Oscar winner by now AS SHE SHOULD BE! I know that she is doing a movie with Leo DiCaprio so I hope he campaigns for her. Like he did with Lily except this time she wins.
