He doesn't play the double bass part all the way only some parts. On the recorded versions Lars played a lot more double bass.

Exactly. What I've been saying for years now. Kirk is the true metal head of Metallica. Remember that stupid movie? Something Monster?! James goes to rehab, Lars bitching about something and Lars is just like, Fuck?! Can we just play?! I have so much respect for Kirk.

Actually Kirk and Lars are the reason for Load. Hetfield just went along with it because you have to make compromises for bands sometimes. He recently said so, and he gives off vibes of dislike over them but accepts they are part of the chapters of Metallica!

Sorry but the dude here didn't do all the double bass fills from the original song, check out the live at Mexico 2009, Lars Nailed it ! But I agree anyway, Lars became so weak since the mid 90's. But when he really want to play, he can be pretty good

Competent is what sense? If you are talking about current live performance then certainly playing with a drummer that can keep up with the song is nice. Lars has a tendency these past few (lots of) years to not be up to it, unless it's a special occasion, then he almost magically turns into a very good drummer once again, like his performance(s) in the recent "Through the Never." Creativity-wise though, the fact that he is half of the writing duo that gave us most of what is on the first five albums of Metallice aside, you do realize that the drum parts played by this, competent drummer, are Lars' creation right? And this song's drumming in particular has been ripped-off so many times and has been the source of inspiration to so many drummers, that even if Lars stopped playing and writing music this day, he should still be rightfully placed among the most important metal drummers ever. Heck, if Mario Duplantier and Mike Portnoy consider the guy a great drummer and influence, who is anyone else to try and diminish his talent?

Drithien Well said and I completely agree. I was mainly pointing out the fact that lately he's "lazy". He doesn't play ANY songs like he used to, most of the time his double bass drumming is completely out of time, and overall just sounds like he's not putting the same effort in as he used to. That said he magically sounds amazing in the big productions like Through The Never or the Mexico live show. Though you are totally right, he's responsible for most arrangements and is definetly a main character in the history of metal. Even so, he said himself he doesn't practice drums, he just practices resistance. What good is being able to drum for 2 hours if it's going to sound like balls?

@@angpilipinaskongmahal6302a lot of people throw shit on him. maybe he isn’t the best player technically, but he wrote really memorable solo and riffs (main riff from enter sandman, creeping death bridge, half of trapped under ice, c# riff in disposable heroes and many more; and solos like enter sandman, master, one, fade). i think he’s great

They did actually. It was played live quite often in 1984, but there is only one recording of them playing it live that I've come across anyway, and the quality is quite poor. But Lars nailed the double bass and it was alot more intense than what it is on the album.

honestly...with all appreciation and this is not meant to be bashing, but you guys here think the drummer is a beast: You don't seem to have any idea what great drummers there really are out there. For laymen it may be mega, but not for drummers.

I've been playing metal on drums for 25 years, and I picked it up with a natural talent. That guy was a great drummer by any drumming standard. Sure, there's lot's of great drummers out there.
