Best demo of Rooms by far! So question; what happens if you switch modes; does the signal carry over? Or does it just drop out and is silent for a bit first?
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 3 года назад
Thanks so much Willem! When you switch modes you do lose the tails of the previous mode and that part is cut off, but what makes up for that is when switching to an ALT mode, that happens smoothly since it’s just a “knob position jump” so you can still get some pretty drastic variation to mix things up a bit on the fly. :)

Great info thx! How does this pedal handle line input levels overall? Thx
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 2 года назад
It does great! No issues whatsoever. I made this video going straight out of the pedal into my Zoom H4n Pro with normal gain levels, so super simple and highly recommended with line level instruments! The dual/independent level controls for the dry and wet signals help with this as well. Hope this helps!

That's a seriously ugly synth. Rooms sounds great despite that thing. Great video, thanks.

Haha thanks for watching and for the comment - and rest easy, they don't make that synth anymore so you won't see them around much if ever lol.

Hi - great demo video! How do the F-D-T tiny potentiometer actually work, how are they supposed to be used?
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 2 года назад
Hey thanks! They’re a second set of the Frequency, Depth, and Time knobs, that only “take over” when you engage the ALT switch. So it’s kind of like a physical “favorite” basically. Hope that helps!
@flaviob829
@flaviob829 2 года назад
@@Duskmos Ah ok... some sort of "patch memory" therefore?!
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 2 года назад
@@flaviob829 That’s it more or less, they have their own values, so when you engage “ALT” the knob positions of the little FDT knobs are what become active, disengage ALT and the big knob values are active. It’s a way to hop between two sets of knob values, but sadly the mode doesn’t come along with it haha. Still a cool feature and something to explore the creative uses for!

It’s SO GOOD on synths, but I really don’t like it much at all on guitars.
@Duskmos
@Duskmos Год назад
You know, I have a guitar but I never tried in with it! It definitely feels more appropriate as a synth/studio effect to me anyway. I guess my mind automatically goes there when there's stereo in and out (and being a synth-first musician anyway haha).

Rooms or the Vongon ultrasheer ???
@Duskmos
@Duskmos Год назад
Mannnn that’s tough! The Rooms is more versatile so if that’s important I’d go that route, but the Ultrasheer is super lush and sounds very great at what it does. They’re both fantastic though so you can’t go wrong!

Thanks, one of the most informative videos out there. Convinced me to exchange the NightSky for this, I'm thinking Rooms will be much better suited to synths.
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 3 года назад
I’m happy I could help! That is interesting to hear - I love the Rooms on synths, but would definitely like to try the NightSky as well. What don’t you like about the Strymon?
@forestchild3261
@forestchild3261 3 года назад
@@Duskmos Firstly, Rooms is a high end reverb, NS is more of a verb-synth. The latter takes your reverb tone using what to me seems like very artificial and basic algorythms and goes on to do cool magic with it, mostly via LFOs and filtering. Problem is, once you put that on a synth which already has all that onboard, it kind of takes over your sound with the typical Strymon ambient shimmery glimmery stuff. Which absolutely can be what you desire! But in my case, with an analog Moog, not so much. Of course NS doe sfull midi control, which is a huge plus. Both are very cool and I applaud Strymon for doing something different on the field of reverbs - but next to the Chase Bliss Mood and Hologram Microcosm, I'd go for the other two (having only owned the Mood personally and still missing it dearly).
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 3 года назад
@@forestchild3261 Thanks so much for sharing that insight! Good to know! I actually have since watched a few Night Sky demos and I see what you mean. It's definitely a different approach and yeah really does seem like a "synth for reverb" which as you say could be the perfect thing for someone, if that's what they're looking for. I'm also curious about the MOOD. I have Blooper and that's been really fun to learn (still not all the way there yet), and I have a CT5 before it which just really gets weird fast, but in a super cool and creative way. My full Microcosm demo is coming on Friday, which, because it does so much, was hard to try and explain so I more or less played through the presets and tweaked along the way. It's fun and definitely takes you to some interesting places. Anyway thanks again for commenting! I appreciate the discussion! =)

I'm actually in the exact same boat. I picked up the nightsky, for both guitar and synth (moog GM, and the mother ecosystem) and thinking of swapping it out for this. The NS is known to be a "dark" reverb, hence the name, but it seems ROOMS covers this simply with the tone knob. My only hang up is very limited demos of sounds simulating traditional spring or plate reverb on guitar. Seems like it goes from 0 to 90 pretty fast.
@brianreilly6545
@brianreilly6545 2 года назад
2 great verbs. To be very picky, the NS needs a smoother enclosure; too rough for my delicate skin.

Hey there! I wanted to chime in about the bit where you start playing with the DIGIT setting. At first glance or listen (like in your video) this setting can seem kind of underwhelming, but the real magic lies in setting the feedback fairly high and then modulating the TIME (with either and expression pedal or your hand on the knob or alternating with settings on the ALT switch). There is some wild stuff to be had there.
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 3 года назад
Oh thanks for that tip! I’ll go back and try that out! There’s a lot of depth to the Rooms it seems, which is definitely rewarding. I’m hanging onto this one for a while to keep exploring, so your comment helps! :)
@justingoers
@justingoers 3 года назад
@@Duskmos Awesome. Yeah, there's a lot of nuanced fun to be had, it doesn't give up all it's secrets right away. I had considered selling it a few times, but I would keep finding super cool settings *every single time* I sat down to reevaluate it's place in my setup. Expression pedal and ALT switching during performance really opens it up.
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 3 года назад
@@justingoers That’s great man, yeah I feel like it’s a solid contender to stick around. There aren’t too many good stereo reverbs out there, the landscape is pretty small, so I think that would always make me second guess selling it haha.

Really appreciate this video. Saw it a few times and ended up purchasing ROOMS recently. Out of curiosity, does an audible pop register on your mixer/interface when you're activating the pedal? I'm already exchanging it because the led for the switch will NOT turn off regardless if the effect is on or off, and I just want to make sure if the audio popping is an abnormality. Regardless, the pedal is awesome. I was going to return my Specular Tempus for it, but the sounds that come out of the two combined is AWESOME. ROOMS is more of a modulation effect than a Reverb, for sure. I decided I'm going to keep BOTH (once I get my replacement ROOMS).
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 2 года назад
Hi! I think it might be an abnormality, for me there's only slight pop if there's a signal passing through it, but it's very minimal and would likely be hidden in a mix (so not one of those loud pops that puts your meters in the red). That's tough that you had an issue with yours, and hopefully your new one works great! I definitely want to check out the Specular Tempus - I've heard good things!

Do i need two stereo pl Cabels? Or is it like two mono cables?
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 2 года назад
Two mono 1/4” cables - you can see on the top front of the box it has “IN L / IN R / OUT R / OUT L” so it’s on 4 jacks. In my case, coming from the Keyed Mosstone I’m using a stereo 1/8” (headphone style) to two mono 1/4” cable. Hope that helps!

I’ve heard people say that the headroom is quite low and clips pretty badly. Do you have any issue with that?
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 9 месяцев назад
Hm I don't remember having an issue with that. This video is over 2yrs old and I don't own it any longer (really liked it but had to sell it to keep bringing in new stuff for the channel). I've seen a lot of people who regularly use this with line level gear, so those things combined I'd say it must be a case by case / setup issue. I use tons of pedals and have to always tweak how hard I'm hitting an input from device to device, so it's prob a YMMV situation - but overall I wouldn't say I had any issue with that personally. Hope that helps somewhat haha.

INCREDIBLE video, thank you. have you by chance experienced that white noise that comes with so many of these pedals?
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 2 года назад
Thanks so much for the compliment! I haven't experienced much noise from this pedal specifically, although I'd have to admit, I don't listen for it unless it jumps out at me in a really obvious way. I expect some level of noise from most pedals though, and find it acceptable since you're dealing with another gain stage and varying degrees of quality of preamps/etc. (and I personally don't mind a bit of noise, YMMV though haha). I'd say that to me this one has been fine in my experience. Hope that helps!

@@Duskmos - I am getting noise with the ROOMS going through my mixer (Soundcraft). I get the noise when the Dry or Fx knobs are up. So when not in use I can drop them down. I had to change the Gain knob on the channel to 25% just so that I can use it. Have you experienced anything like this - going through a mixer? Thanks in advance ! I really love this pedal
@Duskmos
@Duskmos 8 месяцев назад
@@RVHsounds Hey! I didn't experience this, I'd maybe try different power supplies if you have them! I know that can make a huge difference with noise. I think in this video I was using a OneSpot (direct, no dasiychain) and then besides that I've used it with a Strymon Ojai. Also be careful with how hot you're going in. Try to reduce the volume you're putting into it and then boosting the output of the pedal (or vice versa) to see if you can find a sweet spot. Hope this helps! Good luck!
@RVHsounds
@RVHsounds 8 месяцев назад
thank you @@Duskmos ... I am using a power supply that came with the Strymon El Cap. Generally, reducing the Gain on the channel to 25% seems to help decrease the noise - and monitoring how much Fx and Dry signal I use on each patch . Thank for your reply.

@RVHsounds Hmm try another if you have it, those are pretty decent but not great. In my video, you can hear how clean it was for me, so definitely check around for grounding issues, or even interference. It’s so hard to diagnose remotely outside of just suggesting tons of experiments haha. Hope you find a solution! :)
