This was a web-only performance, which Jimmy typically reserved for more obscure tracks. For the performance that actually played on NBC, they did "You Are a Tourist" which was indeed the current single at the time.
soooo cool that they played an old song when promoting a (at the time) new album. and one of my favorite songs/a super rare one that they dont often play live
I find it interesting that they played this song instead of something off of Codes and Keys. Not complaining though, this just might be my favorite Death Cab song.
Ryan Walsh for me it sits only behind the Transatlanticism trifecta of Tiny Vessels, Transatlanticism (when I saw them live I balled my eyes out to it) and a lack of colour
Left uninspired by the crust of railroad earth; It touched the land to the pages of your manuscript. I took my thumb off the concrete and saved up my strength To hammer pillars for a picket fence. It wasn't quite what it seemed, A lack of pleasantries. My able body isn't what it used to be. I must admit I was charmed by your advances, Your advantage left me helplessly into you. Talking how the group had begun to splinter, And I can taste your lipstick on the filter. I tried my best to keep my distance from your dress, But call-response overturns convictions every time. My memory cannot recall (a wave of alcohol), We shared a cigarette and shaved the hours off. Talking how the group had begun to splinter, And I can taste your lipstick on the filter. Lushing with the hallway congregation, My best judgment signed its resignation. I rushed this. We moved too fast, Trips into the guest room. I rushed this. We moved too fast, Trips into the guest room
one hundred percent changed my life and when they played this the first time i saw them live it was absolutely out of this world. didn't know it at the time but it turned out it was Walla's second last show with them live.
Yeah, if you listen to the original version of this song its pretty low fi until the its kicks in at the second verse. They were just making this performance true to the album version because that quality switch gives a great dynamic to the song.
I remember this song was played as I tripped into a guest room so to speak, in college. The guy was a HUGE DC fan and that got me into them. Now i'm a DC Lover too :)
The drum machine was likely added to the first half of the song to achieve that Lo-Fi quality from the album version, but I think it was probably most noticeable live. On RU-vid I can't really notice it, but I still figure that's the reason for the drum machine. Also, Title Track on Fallon?? GENIUS.
@SierraPapaFoxtrot This wasn't the song that they played for the actual show that aired on tv, on the Jimmy Fallon show they often ask bands who've been around for a while to do an older song that they can put up on their website
i love that they didn't play a codes and keys song. i mean, i know people do that a lot and theyre not special but we have the facts is my favorite album so it makes me happy that they chose this. looove death cab~
One of their best songs from one of their best albums. I love death cab and have for many years, I'm glad they still play older stuff because to me its so much better than the last two albums.... I'm not trying to be elitist I just have that syndrome where the older stuff was so good that you can't get into newer stuff that easily.
Definitely shows everyone is on the same page about Codes and Keys. They had a give-away for tickets to an upcoming show in my area. The entire radio commercial played snippets of songs from various albums, Not one from the new album lol :-)
@11salparadise It's probably the pre-recorded drum track that appears on the original record. This is done to give the effect of a different drum texture when the live drums come in like the record.
I just discovered it today after having been a death cab fan for 10 years now (barely ever listened to anything they did pre-Photo Album) and now I'm obsessed with it. Also Company Calls.
Yes! Either Jimmy Fallon has great taste in song requests or Death Cab is going through a mid-life crisis / realizes where their own golden age is / wants people to check out their older (and better) material instead of solely listening to the most recent album(s).
It's not a drum machine, it's QuestLove. On a lot of late night shows bands get extra help from the house band, especially if they like the song and want to play along.
anyone else getting nervous watching Ben fidget so much while he plays? I've seen him live a dozen times and he always does this side to side swaying thing, but he seems to be moving a lot here compared to how chill this song is lol
I doubt they're sampling. You don't really catch it in this video but in other videos of them performing this song, McGerr appears to be using pedals. The lights are too dim to really tell here.
so i'm not the only one that noticed?! his voice changed soo much after plans. and even after the photo album it was totally different. fortunately, transatlanticism and plans kicked so much ass, the voice change didn't bother me.
@Zsmart Congratulations, you responded to a joke from 5 months ago that has already been responded to multiple times. Not only that, but you also managed to misinterpret the nature of the joke entirely. Your parents must be proud.
I'm guessing it's a drum machine. On the album the first half of the song has a really LO-FI drum sound with heavy effects, and then the actual drums kick in after the first chorus. So when they do it live they probably just use pre-recorded drums for the first part
Going back and watching it a second time, they all turn to Jason at the beginning while he fiddles with something, which is probably him triggering the pre-recorded drums
