His last name is pronounced: "SHUL-DEE-NER". Found out by asking the man himself. Got to hang out with him at the hotel we were staying at during the Symbolic tour in '95. Great person, he seemed like a old friend I've known forever, but just met. We chatted for while about metal music. They put on a great show that evening. RIP Chuck...

Sweet! My bandmates and I met him and he was so down to earth. We opened for them in San Diego in the 90's (I don't even remember when exactly haha, lots of dates back then). We were backstage tuning the drums and trying to get our tone right through the PA. Chuck came back and was like "Oh hey guys how's it going" It was like he knew us prior and was looking for us haha. I was always approachable, but after meeting him I always kept that in mind to make time for people who want to meet you. Be a good person. RIP.

Honestly the fact that the amp he used WAS shitty and the fact that he barely used any effects (Wikipedia says he only used a chorus effect for solos) is kinda part of the magic. He had nothing, no fancy equipment, not a lot of money, not much popularity...He was just a visionary who made fuckin amazing music and was totally underground on a quest for himself as an artist, not for anybody else.

I met Chuck Schuldiner, who was standing by the soundboard before the show, and talked to him for a few minutes. The V30's are in fact more efficient than the T75's with 100 db/w/m vs 97. I doubt they are louder though, since the 75 in G12-T75 stands for 75 watts of power handling vs the 60 Watts of the Vintage 30.

@@radocool1 Valvestate combos in the 90s usually carried g12 75s. Mine did, and I had two. I personally prefer the v30s, or both types combined, but after years of using it i realized g12 is more dark and muddy than many other speakers, and v30 has more bite. So combined they go great but if i have to choose i go for the v30.

I was living in Florida at the time this music took off. A lot of guitarist were using 3 distortion pedals with the gain all the way up. Man, that was such a good tone, every note sounded perfect and the fundamental pitch of each note was indistinguishable. This made it unnecessary to learn anything on the guitar because the tone was soooo GOOD that it did not matter what notes were played. Remixing those records is useless because the sounds was perfect.
@Metalbass10000

A friend of mine had a Valvestate in those days, and he was constantly hunting for a better rhythm sound. What he ended up with was an overdrive pedal, used as a clean boost, into a distortion pedal, going into the front of the amp. He would take that clean boosted signal out of the overdrive pedal, the distortion pedal would provide about half of the distortion on his signal, and the valve state would provide the other half of the distortion on his signal. It ended up sounding pretty damn nice for back in those days.

There is a picture from an old Metal Maniacs magazine from the recording sessions from The Sound of Perseverance in which you can see a Boss Super Overdrive. I assume Chuck used that in the studio and live. I also owned this very amp in 2000, and with an overdrive in front, the thing sounded amazing, but it broke down and was never permanently fixed. Dialed in right, it sounds wicked. Although the tone Ola achieved was, in my opinion, not very indicative of the Symbolic album, or Death in general, the fact that he did a video about the great Chuck and Death really means a lot to Death fans out there. Chuck was a true original, he hated trends and fashion, and is my guitar hero. If he were alive today and saw this video, I'm sure he would be smiling and very pleased with it. I still have a complete set (head and cab). I've had it for 23 years now. Honestly they are not bad. I now play on smaller tube amps, mostly, but this top/head still has good tones. It takes pedals well, in front, and in the loop. Good budget amp for those looking for a big sound for small price. Chuck made them shred like no one else...

I still have that head I always got the best results by keeping the contour anywhere from 4 to 6 if not your sound is buried in the mix turns to mud. Plus running an eq in the effects loop definitely improves the sound and playing it semi loud does great wonders as well.
@zegonzales1
@zegonzales1 3 года назад
I have a very old Valvestate (first generation) and I really like it . The distortion is not as strong as my other amp (which is an all-tube Peavey) but it sounds great , very "scooped" when the contour is activated , I use some pedals on the efx l00p , the most important (to me) being a Boss GE-7 Equalizer .

I use to have one of these, and I always thought they sounded decent, but then I got a Randall V2, and decided to sell, sometimes I wish I still had it, because it is kind of unique. It defiantly sounded better after you changed the preamp tube.

Hi Ola. If you get the chance, try the original Marshall 8100 Valvestate. IMO they sound way better than later models. Plus, i believe they were the specific model used by Sir Chuck Schooldinners, RIP.

I bought a combo Marshall Valvestate used at GC for $85. I was thinking it was a solid state (because I'm a dumbass) but when I started playing Symbolic songs, I was blown away how it nails the symbolic tone. Then someone informed me that is what Chuck used. You throw a touch chorus on there to clean it up and it is beautiful.

I have a daddy chuck guitar myself and I absolutely adore it. Personally, I'd never go for a Valvestate, but the Stealth is just special. The shape is so elegant and simple and the controls are too. It's an absolute shred machine. (Although I have thought about switching out the X2N for something a bit sharper; it's kind of muddy to my ears)

Good stuff brother. I met Chuck at the old Peabodies in Cleveland, Ohio in 95. Got to hang out for an hour or so upstairs of the now non existent venue. Chuck was so very humble..talking life and music. Ill never forget the experience. I have an old Valvestate from the early 90's. still works..barely..lol. I also have a signed flyer by chuck..which i laminated for preservation...which im glad i did. I think you got really close to the Symbolic sound. I enjoyed this video. Cheerz!!! \,,/ R.I.P. Chuck

Oh... I forgot.. A locking nut is pretty much mandatory on the Stealth as you found out with the tuning issues. In lieu of this the little string 'trees' or a tension bar behind the nut, which will increase the angle the string path follows does wonders in the tuning stability dept. Not sure the reason Chuck designed his signature axe with so minimal an angle to the head stock, oddly enough, the Satriani signature Ibanez headstock is almost flatly, exactly the same. Maybe it makes string bends easier or something ?

Yes! Symbolic is my favourite Death album! Sold my Stealth a few months ago since it was way to neck heavy, the action was high despite the bridge being as low as possible, it would not stay in tune and the scale was too short for proper string tension, even with 10-52. :/
@poulwinther
@poulwinther 6 лет назад
Honestly I'd go at least .60 on that scale length.
@raytsh
@raytsh 6 лет назад
Yeah, that would have been an option, but I don't like how such thick strings play and feel. 52 is the largest gauge that I like and it works well on 25.5'' in D. I've put 10-52 on my Stealth, tuned to D. This is also the gauge Chuck used, from what I read.
@poulwinther
@poulwinther 6 лет назад
24 3/4" is difficult for low tuning. Even is 25" makes a huge difference. I have a 7-string 25" that works great in standard B with .095 to .70.

Symbolic is the first Death album that listened to, still my favorite. I didn't know that Chuck Schuldiner played with X2N. I've once had a guitar with x2n pickup in bridge. It's fucking powerful man. I could a get ZZ Top kinda sounds from it on clean channel with just a bit of crunch. I loved it however it was just to powerful, if you have a guitar just for metal but you don't like active pickups X2N is the best choice, otherwise i didn't find it as versatile as other Dimarzio pickups. This is great video btw, I think that you nailed the Death tone Ola, cheers!
