Death of a Bookseller: A whole new kind of thriller

Alice Slater’s debut novel, much like the later films in the Scream horror movie franchise, is an almost metafictional thriller about people caught up in the obsession with true crime and serial killers that is our current zeitgeist.

stumbled across this video after finishing this and immediately needing to talk to someone! no spoilers obviously, but i find it fascinating that we seemed to have the same opinion of the book while reading some of the plot points & smaller things very differently. this is why ive got to find a book club! 😂 thank you for the great video!

I've read Pew in 2021 and it became one of my favorite books that year. It's unlike anything I've read before or after. I hope you give it a try 😊

I'm not a thriller lover in general but have been so excited to hear reviews of this book. Your review is fantastic! I can't wait to read it. I think our obsession with true crime is related in a way to Greek drama. We're interested in the tragic "hero" because we're fascinated by how/why somebody becomes a serial killer--interested in the downfall of an ordinary person. Anybody can become a victim--they're nothing special (except maybe in the eyes of the killer). I think this might be what perpetuates that focus on the killers. And of course, it's a terrible tragedy. The victims shouldn't be forgotten.

I have just a few seconds ago finished this book, there are few books that had ever leave me that speechless, God I can't even process what has happened So much heartbreaking loneliness, and as a quite crude and deranged spectator/reader of this tale I can't avoid appreciating the beauty of it all, the chaos, the black and whites of current life, all the subtext, how capitalism is your house and life getting literally consumed by sickness, by slugs, by mould. Bloody hell, thanks for the recommendation, definitely gonna stick in my mind for life

I've added it to my never-ending list. I'm finishing Vandermeer "Acceptance" by the way, I didn't enjoyed the second one as much as "Anihilation", the third one is easier to get in to tought.

It’s a brilliant book! Savage, dark yet with some genuine humour too. Fantastically observed, and I have to say, extremely millennial 😅 you can tell the author has a background in working in bookshops, and indeed she captures working in retail perfectly. Definitely in agreement about the boyfriend character - excellently written and utterly gross!
