Why would "Germanic people" not like the term "Barbarian"?
Because it's LITERALLY an oversimplification of their culture, and a discrimination of such. It's that fucking simple. I don't want someone to call me a dumb squiggly jumple head, I don't need any cultural reasons for why. Add in some that were built around discrimination, used by OTHER PEOPLES...and yeah...I don't want to be called that
A barbarian, or savage, is someone who is perceived to be either uncivilized or primitive.
:KKonaW: GOOGLE SEARCH :KKonaW:
"It was on [the appropriation and adaptation of Egyptian gods] that Greece was founded, according to Plato--and there is no more reliable witness," writes Roberto Calasso in The Celestial Hunter. "The barbarians were therefore the opposite of what the word has come to mean in modern times. They were not new, rough, inarticulate, strong people. They were civilizations much older than Greece--particularly Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia--that had achieved a noble and immovable wisdom."
The Romans used the term barbarus for uncivilised people, opposite to Greek or Roman, and in fact, it became a common term to refer to all foreigners among Romans after Augustus age (as, among the Greeks, after the Persian wars, the Persians), including the Germanic peoples, Persians, Gauls, Phoenicians and Carthaginians."
Damn I should keep using a term that INCORRECTLY describes MASSIVE THOUSAND+ YEAR OLD CIVILIZATIONS.
Because people think I am offended!

#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

Why I loved about the game is how responsive the battles felt! I tried other total war games, but none has the same visceral feeling of getting a flank or charge of at just the right moment

It also had that feeling that's hard to describe where you're just a part of a larger battle with a small force so it's far less stressful. And when you help your teammate or attack together it feels great or if you knock someone out, a well timed javelin throw or cavarly charge out of the forest can turn the game around but it doesn't feel bad when you die as a distraction either. There's no game I've played that matched that TW Arena experience. Especially when it was so simple to pick up and ran inexplicably well on my old computer

I have played almost every single total war game. Total War Arena was honestly one of the most entertaining titles, and I loved playing it. It was amazing to play a massive battle where you only have to micro manage a small part of your team but you can still make a big impact. It’s a shame that they marketed the game horribly and gave up on the game when it didn’t meet expectations

God how I miss the game. My heart was broken when they announced they would shut it down. I played the game each day for hours until the shutdown. Despite everyone saying nobody played it I never had to wait long for matches. And when it comes to the pay to win microtransactions, it's not pay to win unless they will be selling some OP units. These premium units weren't OP. And also the fact that as a Tier 1 unit you won't go against tier 7 premium unit no matter what meant that it wasn't pay to win. It was pay for convenience. Premium accounts and units would speed up your progression, but that progression was artificial. Sure you will get better units, but you will also go against better units. I myself loved to play around tier 3-5 as these units were my most favorite and had no actual need to go higher.

@@luckytanuki5449 That's the origin of the word. I can't believe I have to explain to somebody, that the origin of the word isn't the only way it was used or even conceived. How silly and childish. Roman's (and Greeks) used Barbarian to refer to people without works of writing...but it turns out those people actually did have some works, just not advanced. So then it becomes "well they are MORE barbaric than us" which is not only a pointless and dumb argument...it does nothing to actually tell us about the groups of people. So not only did you literally describe a word, and think you made a point (which anyone who read a history book knows this is stupid), you don't even know what you are ultimately talking about...as a non germanic person. Your first sentence is completely irrelevant, thanks for mentioning it though (they still classified pagans that way...???)? It gives you no ACTUAL information, hence why it's cringe people make it about moral feelings and not ACTUAL data...which it fails horribly as a word at. The original launch of Total War Arena was directly by Sega for about a year, and they had offered access as part of pre-ordering Rome II. They took the game offline for a year, basically restarting development from the beginning, and relaunching with Wargaming as you mentioned. Monetization changed drastically from the first early access to the second. I wrote quite a lot of the topic of the game's monetization and balance on the old reddit. Pay to win was a concern, but primarily in the same way economic rewards benefited purchasers like in World of Tanks and not directly through power, as decision making was often more important than slightly better raw stats in some regards and worse in others. Not being punished economically for your mistakes kept purchasers in higher tier games longer while f2pers had to drop to lower tiers to earn money (in the late game). In the end, they didn't know how to monetize the game and they didn't know how to keep the combat interesting for casual players, or regular total war single-player fans. The game could have benefitted greatly from abandoning the facade of historical "accuracy" and embracing more fantastic elements such as in Total War Troy or 3Kingdoms. The Chinese launch was a bit of a flop for western players, and the game was mostly filled with bots 22 out of 24 hours of the day. Though the bots were well designed, it seemed more popular due to the artificial matchmaking supplemented by bots rather than long queue times. Bots existed previously, but not as well designed or well hidden.

Unlike a war thunder or world of tanks, total war arena goes up against other titles that are also of a higher caliber. Insert an economy system that no longer works and that only benefits those who have been playing for a long time, put in a progression system that doesn't have equal matchmaking like on WOT where you can find opponents with vehicles even 2 tiers higher than yours, and here's the player abandons the title thinking it is poorly made. And they're right, why do a pvp where the new player has to suffer while those who have been playing for a long time go downhill? The competitions are done on equal terms, without crippled some to favor others.

There was lots of interesting historical info in unit descriptions. This game was what Rome 2 should have been, gameplay wise. The game was a blast and the close knit community was mostly great to interact with. ❤ I spent money in the game. Players sometimes complained about my gold units. They weren't much better than vanilla units. They simply offered a unique way to play at different tiers, such as Roman cav a tier or two early. Faster progression meant I had less experience at higher tiers. I frequently lost because of this. It was double edged.

For me the only drawbacks in the gameplay side is that, we should be using 5 units, each commander, instead of just three. The monetization scheme was definitely from Wargaming as it's incredibly similar to that of World of Tanks/Warships. I think it's also a safe bet Sega was in charge of advertisement, which is why the game barely received any. It was basically a RTS lite, much like the current trend of mobile RTS games, just a few years ahead of its time. Also it didn't help that Wargaming's monetization scheme simply didn't fit this type of game at all.

No it didn't, it was used to describe anyone not Roman or Greek. Only originally was it used for "bar-bar" language confusion. You are not proud to be called a slur, please stop being stupid. I am Germanic, and my family still lives in Germany...nobody wants to be called a slur there, especially one used INCORRECTLY to describe groups of people that were so advanced...they defeated the people who classified them as that. Which is why I either doubt you are Germanic, or if you read a history book about your own people...Why would we want a conqueror to name us, when we conquered them?

No one would call a current german a barbarian so your point makes no sense, but there are barbarians currently, it's the truth. To be honest, I quite liked the idea of this game. It felt incredibly large on scale and yet you had only a few select units to control, thus making everything hectic. I would love if there was another game that was released liked this, because I never got to experience total war arena sadly.

You misunderstand me, I love Total War games and I never would want a game or studio to fail, especially given how many people are losing their job in the industry this year. But the way some studios chose to go to war with their customers is unbelievable and CA is one of the worst cases. With Hyenas cancelled, Total War Pharao tanking and players abandoning Warhammer in combination with Sega cutting investments might be too much to recover from. What I do look forward is you covering this post mortem if it happens.

Kinda wish they went for a tug of war conquest map of Europe (or part of it) split between various clans and factions, which gave a sense of conquering regions similar to the Total War games, but simplified, the regions would give a bonus to it's ruling faction once they unified it's province. I think microtransactions should have been restricted to cosmetics for the troops like alternative armors through the faction's history. Though doubt they would have allowed it.

I'm more of a traditional RTS fan, but that MOBA-lite concept sounds really good for a F2P, multiplayer-focused Total War. The same goes for what Dawn of War 3 ended being, so I hope to see other attempts at RTS with minimal base-building (specially with the Warhammer IP involved, but maybe in the League of Legends universe?).

Funny thing is, Arena was starting to shut down at the same time that the Warhammer 2 multiplayer was taking off, with more tournaments and the like, so CA itself was actually getting close to having a really active multiplayer scene. Alas, Warhammer 3 squandered that with a litany of bugs, a small map pool, and a very long production/patch time that was probably caused by most of the developers getting replaced, but still, the framework was solid.
@Alphazans

I'm sure someone already pointed it out, but a few months ago, there was a petition by the TW: Warhammer community to make the main game mode free for all Warhammer 3 players, which they announced in a trailer awhile ago. However, if you want to play some factions or certain character, you can either get the corresponding DLC or the base game, preferably when on sale.

My only experience of the game as a life long fan of the franchise was a teammate of mine from high school soccer played it for a little bit before getting a free code for Medieval 2. I had not been inclined to check it out or even had heard much before that point even though it was at that time my favorite franchise in gaming. I barely even knew what it was before it was Old Yeller'd.

I've been playing Total War games since Shogun 1 and I also played a crap ton of World of Tanks. I got burnt out of WoT because of the grind and monetization. I also tended to play mostly multiplayer on total war games since really I was just after the feeling of being a general of antiquity and outsmarting the opponent general. I was so excited when I heard of Total War Arena, and then so immediately disappointed that it had Wargaming monetization, I was already so sick of it from WoT. I played TWA a bit, the gameplay was fun, but man, I just couldn't do another Wargaming grind so I stopped.

Honestly as someone who has played every historical total war apart from the new Egyptian one, Total war arena was my favourite, Because of the multiplayer aspect, many people agree, so then IF it failed to meet expectation, why not just add a better multiplayer matching system like shogun avatar conquest, for all the historical total war titles? a small but rewarding feature no? I still can't believe they terminated this game, I see many 10 VS 10 RTS games in 2022 and 2023 that are very successful, The biggest mistake total war ever made in my opinion ;( I think I got Boudicca, I think she was a premium general,

I remember feeling like the progression in this one was even slower than in Wargaming's other games (maybe I just sucked at it). Also, Wargaming had a subscription that gave you benefits in all their games, but it didn't cover this one. That was a major killer for me. I had enjoyed being able to switch between World of Warships and World of Tanks freely with the same sub. I feel like they would have brought more of their players to Arena if they had included it.
