I saw this play last night and it blew me away. Over 70 years old yet it rung so true for me. I worked in sales for 5 years and bought all the BS until I woke up one day. I missed some dialogue though so this covers a lot of holes.
I watched a production of this last night. It blew my mind. I worked in sales for about 5 years; and so much of this rang true of the attitude I had to adopt and the people I worked amongst.
So this is the very first time Im listening to this, and I think Im missing something... Because for me, this guys life seems pretty tame. Why'd he kill himself? I dont feel like I listened to anything deeply important while other people in the comments are saying this blew their mind?
I performed in this play years ago. Willy's life, his very essence was based on being a 'man' and how he felt a man should be,especially at the time of this plays writing, it was a time when a man worked and a woman raised a family. To not be able to work and provide a living wasn't just the loss of work,it was the loss of identity, of masculinity. He felt a failure and realised he was old, not wanted
He's like 60 something years old. He's been chasing the same dream and it's been getting further away from him all his life. He gets his kids to chase the same dream and they have the same difficulties he does. He finally realizes that he's ruined his own life and the life of his kids at the end. He's been a burden to everybody and figures the only way he could help his kids now is by giving them whatever money comes out of his death.
“Happy took Biff on a date” means that Hap had a date and he had his date bring a girl for Biff. So a double date. Later, Happy says, “How about those 2 girls we had tonight?”
@@TheMento98 Indeed, such as dates where one partner is planning to break the news that they want to break up, or dates where the woman is planning to announce she's pregnant.
There needs to be an African American version of the play with maybe Roscoe Orman as Willy, Patricia Rashad as Linda, David Oyelowo as Biff, Michael B. Jordan as Happy, Reginald Velohnston as Charley, Tyler James Williams as Bernard, Danny Glover as Ben, Kellie Shanygne Williams as the Woman, China Anne McClain as Jenny, Levar Burton as Howard, Kel Mitchell as Stanley, Cherie Johnson as Miss Forsythe, and Hallie Bailey as Letta.
Requesting from the universe a real life "Death of a Saleman" but eventually he finds happiness selling hambags and killing other salesmen. Otherwise tldr
