In 1956-57, legendary photographers Dorothea Lange and Pirkle Jones teamed up to document the final year of life in Monticello, California. The town would soon be flooded to form Lake Berryessa in an attempt to meet water needs in the north Bay Area and Napa Valley.
This was the final documentary project in Lange's illustrious career. She's best known for her work with the Farm Security Administration documenting the Great Depression and her photograph Migrant Mother.
All photographs by Dorothea Lange and Pirkle Jones.

Hello! Lake Berryessa Resident here. Pretty crazy history that I have never sat down to learn. I was pretty intrigued as we walked through the cemetery where most of the people from the town were relocated. My fiances family was from the town of monticello. They were peach farmers.

Incredible!! Thank you for sharing! I just wanted to give you a tip in how you zoom in on photos. I thought that was a cool effect but would love to see the photo grow to take up the whole screen!! Love you bro!

WOW! A poignant story, to be sure. Whether "progress" or "planned," destruction is still destruction.

I’ve actually heard of this town before for a very weird reason. They talk about it in the movie zodiac. Two of the victims were having a picnic at the lake when they were attacked by the zodiac killer.
