How is that an r/woosh? LOL you just expected him to realize that something plenty of people say everyday without any media-inspired context is from a shitty superhero movie? With the exception of old radio programs and Dick Tracey novels and storylines, which are sadly no longer airing, Superhero movies and tv shows are all objectively terrible, anyway; because, no matter what character they are based on, the new creative team/writers will always mess up the original story. This is exactly why they shouldn't reboot characters and just leave them as they are without censoring or changing them for a "modern" audience that can't even handle when others share their opinions publicly nor when people refer to others using their rightful, birth-name instead of calling everyone pontiff vapoides maximilian rex bananahammock XVI or some other weird crap they dreamed up on the night before.
Yes, having the souls represented as heads with wings, then going across a river in a reed boat, and all the deities are pretty accurate. The art style is close to that of Egyptian tomb art too.
+Paul Hanson Looks like more than somebody got an A+ at the midschool History Class. :) Happy to see that applied in such a funny and serious tone, Paley's favorite it seems.
no more ancient history in american standard classes :c I was lucky I had an interest in it since I was young, but most people my age weren't taught anything about ancient history :| at least, not where I come from
+Dancer of the Frigid Valley do american classes even talk about the portuguese discovery age? or you talk about Columbus and the Spanish like they were the first?
I never thought about this connection before, but there's a reason ancient Egyptian art always depicts things sideways. If something was looking right at you, there was supposed to be a danger of it coming to life. Therefore, the Angel of Death's full-face view would likely be very disturbing to any ancient Egyptian viewer, something akin to a character seeing past the fourth wall in our modern media.
By that time, there had already been 9 plagues...plenty of weird to go around and to convince many Egyptians that the God of the Children of Israel made their pantheon look like a bunch of cartoon characters.
to be fair the goats blood they used was during a time when no one was aloud to kill the lamb as it was during the season of rebirth in which a god with a goat hand would come and heal if it saw goat blood it would take it as an insult.
to be fair at this time their was a goat god in eygpt in which you couldn't kill goats in the spring it was a crime as that is when that god would come to the mortal world and from our knowledge this happen in spring which would have been a death sentence to the hebrews.
The song used is actually about a love story between a spider(the man singing) and a moth(the woman singing). Though the way it was used here it fits so well.
@@justflex6745 It's a kinda fucked up lovestory, true. Look up "Spider Suite" by The Duke of Uke and His Novelty Orchestra for the full version if you're curious
Song by David King. R.I.P. Dave was hella funny and brilliantly creative and kinda nuts, with a good heart that apparently stopped this morning (January 11, 2024). We both had comic strips in the Daily Illini in the late 1980's; his, "Bob 'n' Dave," was amazing: clever, funny, gonzo, and unpretentiously deep. Much later, as the Duke of Uke, he made "Spider Suite" which I used in my film Seder-Masochism. His was the absolutely perfect voice of Death, and if there is an afterlife I hope he's simultaneously entertaining and scaring the pants off any souls he meets.
3:30 I like how even though this is based on a story from the Bible , the spiritual beliefs of the ancient Egyptians are depicted with dignity and beauty
@@paemonyes8299 she just likes making animations about every religion she even has some from ancient mesopotamia or babylon, i mean christians make movoes about vikings but are they then pagan?
Call me crazy but the second half of this piece really helped me after my niece's suicide a couple years ago. Watched it several times during that period and I felt some peace. Thanks for that.
("near" *death experience* in december 2019) death was first warm and numbing, made me loose myself and my body then the cold came and wiped me away. death was not as cruel as everything that happened before (Wont go into the details) i went to a bright place, even though living me would have protested going there -shining people, calling me by a name i felt within me then i went to a dark place, "the father" a dark and grim figure on a throne, who's face my mind refuses to process simply told me i was forgivne. idk why. idk how. i felt nothing at the time, if there was such a thing.
The way the Angel of Death is depicted through your art is terrifying in the way it moves and how it’s shaped, yet weirdly comical with the constant smile on its face.
For those who are interested : The falling stars you wished upon are cinders now and now they're gone. Their residue festoons my fetid field. Revealing husks of lovers past, their shells are all that ever last-- I've taken everything that they've concealed. Whoever told you life was fair? Look around you everywhere, the cruelty of Nature is displayed. Why the scorn? Why the surprise? Everything that's born must die and it isn't I who made the world that way. What wicked little twist of fate placed you here upon my plate? Here where no one hears your cries? Where was your God to steer you through? Perhaps your God's forsaken you? Otherwise, why lead you here to die? I know the way how, I'll melt away now. I know the way. I'm feeling bliss now, dissolved to mist, how strangely I go away. Now I finally know.... It's merely moments now, moments now until your feeble flesh bends to my will-- and it will, so rest your weary head. There'll be no pain, no pain at all, as everything you are dissolves. Your fate resolved upon my silky threads. I know the way how, I'll melt away now, I know the way. I'm feeling bliss now, dissolved to mist, how strangely I go away. Now I finally know..... Song by Duke of Uke and His Novelty Orchestra
One must study to shew themselves approved, as a workman that need not be ashamed. All is revealed to those that walk in the Light. There is literally layers and depths of wisdom and knowledge presented in this short cartoon/video. If one is not able to hear and see the wisdom within, then one must first learn to cross over from the darkness to the light, and all will be revealed in time.
The worst thing when people refuse the archaeological finding that proves the pharaohs who built the pyramids and they were no Jews in Egypt ever they documented everything there is no mention of Jews being enslaved. It’s all mythologies made up by Ezra the scripture he edited Genesis from what he learned from Akhnatoun priests, and the remnant priest from Samaria infusing, both mythologies to start initiating a new faith called Judaism 1150 BC that’s where all the BS started .
I love the little details in this, like at 4:55 when Death looks like he's trying to remember the word "head" and looks away in thought, being an incorporeal being with no head and all.
He’s basically got a soft heart when it comes to collecting souls. Promising there will be no pain rest easy that’s pretty much it. He’s not evil he’s just doing his job whether it’s right or not. I know Moses was not too proud of that. God made that decision, considering he also used to consider himself an Egyptian Prince.😢😢😢 While the pharaoh believed, Moses was a sorcerer bringing chaos. Apparently he did warn him this was gonna happen. Tried to tell him let my people go. Yes that’s what happens when you have a stubborn and pharaoh. Saddest part of the whole story is that Moses was like a brother to Ramses growing up together it’s real tragic I’ll say.
I don’t understand how death’s words in this animation helped me get over my death anxiety. I’ve stopped worrying about death. Whatever happens after I die happens. I’m thankful for being alive and I am going to make to most out of my time being alive.
9213ify i know what the video is about. i'm talking about the song that starts playing when the angel of death first appears. btw spider suite is the song which is sang by the woman.
What is so beautiful about this song? Do you not see the beauty of it all? Do you not know how the Egyptians treated the Israelites? Does anyone? Also the slaves that Israel weren't treated like animals. They were treated like human beings. They were given rest periods and treated like the rest of the community. Sure you can make the argument that yeah they are still slaves. You miss the point.

Learning new stuff is so terrible, isn't it Logan? We should always shame people who bring up those disgusting things called "facts". It's boring! Boooooo boring!
Long ago, in a distant land, I Aku, the shapshifting master of darkness. Unleashed an unspeakable evil. But a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magic sword, stepped forth to oppose me.
Long ago, I Yahweh, Universal master of justice. Unleashed a great genocide, but a foolish Pharoah with hardened heart stood his ground and opposed me.
astonishingly good. this is the best expression of ancient Egyptian thought of life and death I've ever seen expressed, plus the Biblical frame gives it a jazzy and irreverent context that's also poignant. I think if Egyptian artists had developed the idea of animation this would be one of their favorite works. Also thank you youtube for introducing me to these things every day.
I agree that youtube is the main connection, but also thank nina paley for the animation. Because of this millions of people have downloaded this song probably billions have downloaded, who knows lets hope. Maybe we beat Nikki minaj rapping about her degeneracy of civiliazation but who f'n knows lets see. Anyway, nina brought tons of exposure and great story and visuals. youtube brought you here and brings you everywhere, duke of uke and his orchestra is amazing and his album art is fantastic.
Is really funny how I hear that this song is actually based on a love story between a spider and a moth. That makes the lines at 5:05 "as everything you are dissolves, as your fate resolves, on my silky threads" literal but because the song is being reinterpreted through this video everything literally became figurative! I love it on multiple levels.
Mid egypt ?!!! they were jews they were never part of egypt or egypt history they were just salves who work in homes of the egyptians masters that it and history proved it
Since you refuse to free my people All through the land of Egypt... I send a pestilence and plague Into your house, into your bed Into your streams, into your streets Into your drink, into your bread Upon your cattle, on your sheep Upon your oxen in your field Into your dreams, into your sleep Until you break, until you yield I send the swarm, I send the horde
God himself made Pharaoh not to want to free his people and punishes not the Pharaoh only, but all the egyptian people . Great sense of justice ... the innocent being punished in the place of the guilty ...
I have noticed in the video that Death got absolutely no role after the actual dying. Its job is done by then. His voice is goosebumps though, perfectly matched. Not evil at all, but commanding respect.
Everytime I hear "I know the way" emotions well up inside me. Remember my loving mom who passed some months back. I trust that she's in a better place. She was an example of faithful Christian while alive. Rest peacefully mama💭💭
+amanogirl1 Interesting, I felt more at peace in a way, especially at the end where the people seem to be at peace with the fact that they'll fade away.
In the bible God told Moses to call him Yahweh The Passover does look wrong but it's just like that to honour God and to finally teach an arrogant idiot who is boss. Plus the Pharoah's kid dies too so maybe the pharaoh wouldn't even care for the other babies but just his own.
1:54 Best part! Whoever told you life is fair? Look around you everywhere, the cruelty of nature is displayed. Why the scorn? Why the surprise?Everything that’s born must die and it insn’t I who made the world that way.
Preparing for the afterlife was important because it would be eternal and at best the continuation of their earthly life, without disease, misery and the bad stuff. Egyptians loved life so much they wanted it to be forever in the next.
Awww thanks! We love multi-part harmonies. You might really like our first album, This Way Up. Especially check out "Breathe". Available on CD Baby: store.cdbaby.com/cd/thedukeofukeandhisnovelt2
I'm a first born Egyptian , so this plague always made me feel weird... It was only until I heard that song particularly the melody in the end of the song I started to feel better... I felt that they felt peace.
Karen Durant the vibrant, soft colors of the flowers? The smooth growth speed of the flowers? The soothing strumming of the unnamed string instrument that I can’t decide if it is acoustic guitar, ukulele, or something else?
It’s the sweetness in the release of death, I think. Like a long, peaceful sleep in a summer’s day. Like taking a nap beneath the branches of a tree with the sun warming the earth beneath. I imagine that’s what it’s like after death; peaceful, like a summer afternoon.
Regardless of your thoughts on religion, politics, this movie or anything else, I think most of us can agree on something: this is as beautiful as it is... chilling.
I think it makes *WAY* more sense to assume that he is not Death, but Yahweh. But you got a point. I see why you mistook that sadistic psychopath for Death.
God: Yo Death, I want you to kill-- Death: Can do! God: I'm not finished. I want you to kill everyone-- Death: Can do! God: I'M NOT FINISHED! I want you to kill everyone's first born who doesn't have lamb's blood above their door. Death: .......... God: I'm finished. Death: Can do!
I've had this song on repeat for years. Think it's about time I leave a comment. Anyway. Animation is a joy to watch and the voice cast is beyond perfect
"What wicked little twist of fate placed you here upon my plate? Here where no one hears your cries? Where was your God to steer you through? Perhaps your God's forsaken you? Otherwise, why lead you here to die?" The creppiest thing is that Death says this while laughting and smiling to the crying boy's face. He's actually having a great time.
Just a bunch of sergals well this story/song/imagery at its core is about the force that is death, and that despite men thinking we are masters of it we can never control. The only thing that controls death is what you call Nature and what I call God. And weather you see the Bible as literal or allegorical, the Bible notes that God, especially in the Old Testament, is not merely the guy who gives you stuff but is Nature incarnate. And like Nature, God brings everything to everyone and reminds all those who are blessed or powerful that you can say the right words, make the right prayers, and believe what we do is right, but God and Nature will always be that can't be contained. And to those who try to control people or nature as if they're Gods will be reminded that they never can. And weather you call it God or Nature, this theme will exist for all time and it's what keeps us humble. That in the end we all will die.
I know it’s 4 years too late but Techically this isn’t a religion song it’s a love song between a male spider and a female moth but the spider can’t fight his instincts to a prey in his webs even tho it’s the one he loves and mocks her to try justifying his actions saying he’s the god of death while the moths parts are her accepting her death and trying to comfort him to help him find peace with himself and saying she’s fine with passing on for his survival
2:43 Death - "What a wicked little twist of fate, placed you here upon my plate, here, no one hears your cries, where was your God, to steal you through, perhaps your God has forsaken you, other wise why leave you here to die"💀 Bitter TRUTH
I absolutely love the little detail as the angel of death is doing his monologue while walking the people into the river he looks like he has to remember the sweet nothing parts of the speech. He looks up to the side at the line "there'll be no pain" but doesn't seem to have to try to remember the parts about him asserting his power of them. I loves it.
People of the comment section, can we please stop arguing about religion and just agree that the reason that you took interest in this video was based your own PERSONAL opinion! Not someone else's opinion! So you don't have to insult other people's beliefs and opinions just because you don't agree with them! Thank you and goodbye
My christianities teacher showed this to my class years ago, and it still stuck with me for all that time. The animation and the music really blend together well and I come back to this video every couple of years when I remember it again
idk i think it's looking mighty similar to those cailou gets grounded goanimate things after watching it a few times it's good, and i wouldn't listen without it, but it could look less like that, ya know?
it can still have the same style and atmosphere for example, one of my favorite moments is at 4:51, but it certainly seems like some degree of effort could go into cleaning it up a little
"The falling stars you wished upon are cinders now and now they're gone. Their residue festoons my fetid field. We are both the spider, the fly, the web, and the universe that all exist in and upon. It’s a poetic game of “tag your it”: Energy moving to another ecosystem and changing every time, from cocoon to stars someday.
After watching several times for the sheer pleasure of it I actually noticed in the beginning Death is singing almost fast paced and intense. Kinda scary. But once the actual dying is done Death sings something like a lullaby. Its peaceful, natural and not something to be feared in the end. All in all I found this beautiful. The music was fantastic, the singing was haunting and beautiful, but the art and animation was to die (pun intended). I love watching this video. I think this marks my 20th viewing
Like when someone approaches their end, their heartbeat gets insanely fast, for the body's fear of dying and fighting it...then rest. There is a cemetery on the island of Capri, Italy, that is called "Cimitero cattolico e Cimitero acattolico " (Catholic cemetery and Protestant Cemetery), which has this very one word written above its entrance. "REST". Not "we will rise again", but only this. I had been there, and I found it strangely comforting.
