That reminds me a story I read or I was told 30 years ago. I remember that it was presented as a 'true' story but I can not find any historical reference so it may very well be invented. This is basically the same story but with different details and an interesting conclusion. A prisoner is condemned to be executed in a (french?) penal colony. The execution fails several times and the prisoner sentence is eventually cancelled. So far this is basically the same story but the interesting part is the explanation. The answer was given several years later by one of the prisoners who was in charge of building the gallows (or was it a guillotine?). The mechanism was sabotaged using a very clever technique. A priest was always present during the execution so the builders created a dedicated seat on the gallows. During all tests, that seat was empty and everything was working fine. During the real execution attempts, the priest was sitting and his weight was preventing the mechanism from working properly.
