Death Valley National Park straddles eastern California and Nevada. You can think of Death Valley as being divided into two main set of attractions. Those that can be done with a regular clearance vehicle, and those that require (or at least is highly recommended) a 4x4 or All-Wheel-Drive vehicle.
In this episode i'll take you on the part of Death Valley that most people don't visit as it requires a 4x4 or All-wheel-drive vehicle with plenty of ground clearance and beefy tires.
I will visit Titus Canyon, the Ubehebe Creator, The Grandstand and the mysterious moving rocks (on the Racetrack Playa).
Titus Canyon
- Vehicle needed: Two-wheel-drive, high-clearance recommended; four-wheel-drive may be needed after adverse weather conditions. Two-way section from west OK for two-wheel-drive, standard clearance vehicles.
- Distance: 27 miles; last 3 miles on west end are two-way
- Time needed: 2 to 3 hours
- Start: Nevada Highway 374 (Daylight Pass Road), 2 miles east of park boundary Road
- Conditions: One-way road from east; this dirt road is rough, steep and narrow; often closed due to snow, mud, or wash outs; two-way section from west is graded dirt road.
- Warnings: Infrequently patrolled, summer travel not advised. Canyon prone to flash flooding, avoid entering when rain threatens. Ask at ranger stations for current road and weather conditions.
Ubehebe Creator
- Difficulty: Walking to the bottom of the main crater is easy; however, the trip back up can be exhausting. Walking around the rim is moderately difficult due to the initial climb and loose footing.
- Distance: The walk around the rim of Ubehebe Crater is about 1½ mile round-trip. This route leads past several smaller craters, including Little Hebe.
- Safety: Please stay on the trail since the crater rim and nearby gullies are composed of very loose material making them unstable and dangerous.
Racetrack Playa
- Driving condition: Rough terrain due to the washboard effect on the road. A high clearance vehicle required. Please do not drive faster than 20mph as you may loose traction and crash or severely damage your vehicle suspension. We saw many people on the side of the road due to tires that had exploded and warning signs on their dash board. Use common sense and don't be careless.
- Drive time: Plan for approximately 2 hours to get there and 2 more to drive back. Take your time.
- Safety: Take your time, drive slow and enjoy the scenery. Take plenty of water, gas up your car, and take some food so you can eat. I do recommend to let some air off your tires in order to avoid your tires from bouncing too much (better ride quality).
