Here’s the simple reality behind the plot: The German hostage was a death spirit that only let Shakespeare go because the former spared the latter. There is no other moral meaning surrounding the events of the movie. It’s like feeding a crocodile a piece of meat to keep it from eating you
@PerturaBased
@PerturaBased 2 года назад
Not at all, he was testing them to see who was worth of saving and Shakespeare showed mercy and duty, so ot isn't the same as feeding an animal

I always saw the hostage as an incarnation of Saint Peter judging whether they were worthy of salvation. There’s also an argument for him being the Shaitan/Lucifer (the prosecutor in the court of heaven).

The way i understood it was very simple, that trench was cursed. It was somewhere out of reality, inescapable and all that. Fantastical idea, and if you view it like that, the film is much better

Personally I think this a fantastic and underrated movie. Great characters, looks great and is creepy as hell. Sure the plot doesn't have too many twists but this psychological is dripping with atmosphere. That they achieved all this on a tight budget is quite an achievement IMO.

I never understood why he would tell them to leave. And if they did chose to leave what would happen?
@philsayer2447

There's no possibility that they'd listen... They're too full of hate towards the Germans and too desensitized to expecting the horrors of war to care.

Just imagine if Clive Barker did a remake of this. Let him have go to town on it with his own twisted, horrific style of horror. That would be one nasty, twisted horror movie, my kind of horror movie.

This movie kinda reminds of the "Where the corpses sink forever" album by a band called Carach Angren. The whole album has this limbo-ish feel and it's basically horror stories (similar to this film) from WWII. This movie feels really similar to the songs "These Fields are lurking" and "Lingering in an imprint haunting"

they find an empty trench with 3 German soldiers in it. weird definition of empty.
@schibleh531
@schibleh531 4 года назад
Nah it's a normal definition of empty. Trenches should be packed with soldiers so when you come up on one and only find 3 dudes then ya, it's pretty empty by trench standards.

Ah, Deathwatch... I remember its VHS cover at my local video rental store. It always sat right beside the film "Stigmata". It's one of those movies where you recall it being solid, but are then left disappointed after watching it for a second time. The primary issue that I have with the film is that the characters are all so bland and uninteresting. I could look past the poor pacing and very bare plot if the soldiers had some depth, but they are little more than cardboard cutouts. I cannot relate to a single one of them, nor do I feel any hatred or sympathy towards any one soldier. This is kind of a major problem, because as Iain pointed out, it's impossible to feel much of anything when they begin to turn on one another or are being killed off. Had the script been more polished and the characterizations stronger, that could have gone a long way in making this film a proper horror gem. With that said, I do appreciate that the director committed to the perpetual rainfall and bleak atmosphere. Regardless of budget, making a film with simulated rain throughout can be pretty miserable, but they stuck with it for the most part. That's about as much praise that I can offer the filmmakers, though.

In the end of movie when shakespeare climbed the lader after the german let him leave. When come up on the ground right down corner is a modern lader in red colour.. they forgot it...

I agree with a lot about your review lads, especially about the quality/lack of quality of the film, and especially the filming/pacing/cinematography and how it's all a missed opportunity. BUT for me, I like a film that leaves you with more questions than answers - don't want it in all my films but especially in a WW1 film I think it's the way to go... Are they dead and in hell? Or being tested in limbo? Is it all real and the trench itself is cursed with the German being some vengeful spirit? Is it the sheer twisted and inhumane nature of the land and what the war has turned it into that's attacking them? Is it all happening in their heads, or just in Shakespeare's head, maybe as he's dying? Are the one's who've become accustomed to war given violent deaths whilst Shakespeare gets saved because he doesn't see the point of it all? I think the point is they've heavily - even ham fistedly - used everything as a metaphor for the first world war. The themes of confusion, what's happening and why, is there a point to any of it, can they just leave at any time, the dehumanising effect of war, the insanity of war, the hostility & inhumanity of the very environment of the trenches (so many soldiers died from infection or lost feet), slowly failing to see the difference between friend and enemy, the prevalence of insanity, in such a horrific & hateful environment one small act of kindness bringing about redemption, the empty boredom just for one of your friends to suddenly die out of nowhere... These and more are all things that are supposed to represent the very nature of WW1 itself and they've been primarily concerned with putting that in, and not focused on whether it makes sense in terms of an A to B to C, then here's the big twist and we all learn what's really happening and why. Again look at the soldiers who came back home after making peace with the Germans, only for there to be another even bloodier war against them within decades and wondering what was the point of it all? WW1 was SO brutal because the world powers didn't understand the ramifications of mechanised warfare - particularly the machine gun - and had outdated drawn-battlelines tactics they couldn't adjust for. So they just used repeated head-on charges to gain a bit of land and move up to the next trench and prepare for the next push, only to eventually be pushed back again (in world war two soldiers and battles were always moving, trying never to maintain two opposite static positions). None of it making any sense, none of it making any difference (the invention of the tank ended WW1, everything the footsoldiers did until then just prevented either side from advancing), and all of it being a horrific human meat-grinder that is so far removed from what humans want, need or can stand that no one came back unscathed.

Just like to say I'm named after my great-uncle Phil who lost both his legs in the first world war, then in world war two when the blitz happened he had a complete PTSD breakdown thinking it was German artillery again and I believe he died in an institution. Never met him, he died before I was born, but lest we forget.

dying after they're dead signifies that they've made their final choice to determine their eternal fate. There's no logical issue... It does seem like this movie is advocating complete pacifism at the end when ONLY Shakespeare is allowed to leave
