You need to apply context though; which top sides has he beaten in the knockout rounds? Only Germany springs to mind. As Rory has previously mentioned he has won 4 in 24 against top 10 teams. He has been fortunate with certain results (scraping past Colombia on penalties, losing to Belgium in the World Cup to give us an easier draw). Look at the teams that have knocked us out as well: the Croatia and Italy teams who we were a goal up against (and arguably France) are much weaker than the likes of the Portugal and Brazil sides that Eriksson went out to as an example.

He hasn't beaten a team we weren't expected to beat yet.

@@JimmySands-pd7xt Firstly you can only defeat teams you face. He has an Euro final and World Cup semis in his name. So only Sir Alf Ramsey has been better than him. Before him the six knockouts win in the above mentioned period are Paraguay, Belgium, Cameroon, Ecuador, Denmark and Spain ( on penalties) England have crashed out to Iceland in the time period. Not to mention not being able to qualify for a few tournaments. Going out in the group stage multiple times like Euro 2000, 88, 92.

@@sauvikchakravorty7907 if you are basing success solely on how far he’s gone in tournaments then yes only Ramsey has been better, but I think that is a very limited view and like I said I think you need to apply context: At the World Cup in 2018 he lost 3 games, 2 vs Belgium and 1 vs Croatia (the only two half-decent teams we faced). He beat Sweden, Tunisia and Panama in 90 mins (3 teams we were much better than and expected to beat). In the round of 16, he had to rely on the lottery of penalties to beat a Colombia side we were expected to beat comfortably. Had he lost, the narrative behind Southgate would have been very different, but he won and received praise for winning our first shootout in a long time, despite the fact penalty shootouts have very little to do with managers and are down to the composure of the players. Any decent manager wouldn’t have let the game go down to the lottery of penalties. Overall Southgate blew the best chance we will ever have of reaching a second World Cup final, given the draw and the fact we were 1-0 up in the semis. At the 2020 euros he had one good result against Germany in the round of 16. All the other teams we were much stronger than and expected to beat. He once again blew a 1-0 lead, this time in the final to an average Italy team (they failed to qualify for the following World Cup). It was one of the most negative England performances I’ve ever seen, I don’t think we registered a shot on target in the second half. He is a very negative and safe manager whose first thought is how to stop the opposition rather than how to hurt the opponents with our quality attacking players. The worst example of this was at the euros when he played 5 defenders and 2 holding midfielders (only 3 attack-minded players). He has no previous managerial pedigree and has alienated the fanbase with his constant political gestures, boring tactics/team selections and uninspiring interviews.

Group stage euro exit in: 80, 88, 92, 2000 Not qualifying for the world cup in 74,78, 94 Group stage exit in 2014 Second group stage exit in 1982 Also embarrassingly losing to Iceland in 2016. Now on approach every managers has different approach like possession for pep, gegenpress for klopp, pragmatic approach by simeone. It's about getting who gets the result. And in that case Southgate has been the second best manager only behind Sir Alf Ramsey. No other England manager gets a shout

Butland has saved Rangers a lot of points this season, but against the likes of Motherwell, Livingston etc. He's not been great when they play higher quality like in Europe or Celtic, even Aberdeen.

I wouldn't take ward prowse personally mainoo has way more quality in the ball but I'd swap him for another attacker and take rashford because I'd use trent as a midfielder

If I was the manager I wouldn't take Gallagher either doesn't suit international football I would rather have a guy who has more quality on the ball like mainoo or barkley or Jones

@michaelgoldsmith9359 Why not? Man City does against PSG and they're 3W-1L-0D. They also play a high line against RM who have Vini. There are wingers in the prem that are about as fast as mbappe, and City (and now Arsenal) suffocates them with a high line, a high-intensity press, and enough speed to cover a through ball. England could have a starting XI of basically all City and Arsenal starters plus Jude and Kane.
