Stephen is very patient and relaxed considering how many thousands of times he must have been asked these same questions about his parents. I always had the impression that he was separated from them a lot so he had to learn to be independent, After his father died he was even put in boarding school He is an individual person too with his own separate and independent life.
I think his “regularness” speaks volumes about how he was raised. I remember reading years ago when his brother Sam went to Lauren and Jason telling them he wanted to be an actor, they pretty much told him “Great. Go for it. We had to work for where we got and so will you.” They didn’t hand him anything. I love that.
I'm a Stephen Bogart Fan. What a decent humble man. He achieved a lot and his dad would have been very proud. He was part of the inception of ESPN I am told. I him and his family all the best.
Thank you for posting this ... Fascinating ... Unlike some viewers of this video, I appreciate the fact that Stephen seems "relaxed" and not "full of himself" due to his background.
I don’t know that her show title deserves three exclamation points. She seems very pleasant, just not the best interviewer out there. With that said, Mr. Bogart was gracious, patient, engaged and authentic against the banal backdrop of her skill level. He seems like a very normal, relatable guy, who just happened to have been born into circumstances that are anything but. Would like to see him with another interviewer, who talked more about his life after age 8, which he could probably offer many more details about his life experiences as the son of these great talents. Debra!!!: “Here’s looking at you, kid.” Mr. Bogart: “Well, he became ill when I was 7, died when I was 8. As I said, several times, I don’t remember that much, because I was just a little kid.”
Did you ever think maybe he's not so into it because he has been asked the same questions for (at the time of this interview) for over 50 years? I thought it was a nice interview, and you must read his book, it is a great story of a boy's grief over the loss of his father.
Generally Hollywood casts actors for roles as type, like tough guy roles, or action roles, or amours roles etc., but the incredible thing about Humfrey Bogart, he was casted in roles counter to tough guy roles, like the “African Queen”, the “Cane Mutiny ”. I learned that his family actually goes back to the Mayflower.
I thought this was a great interview, Steve is just a mellow guy it seems, but answers everything graciously! The interviewer is very respectful and I really liked her questions, she asked things I would've asked him!
I would say that his half brother Sam has the same issue. Sam is the son of the late great actor Jason Robards. Bogie and Robards were excellent actors as was Lauren Bacall. It’s a lot to live up to.
Maybe nowadays people see so many dramatic 'talk shows', normal talking seems unnormal to them. And I hate they always show the 'whistle scene'. Like that's all Lauren Bacall did in her life.
Humphrey Bogart was only 57 years old when he died in 1957, if like his son Stephen, (8 years old at the time) mentioned more of a father figure than an actual father. If Humphrey Bogart lived another twenty years then yes he would have had more memories and considered him his father alongside his sister who was 4 years old at the time of her father's death.
It's creepy how she asks him how he feels seeing his parents in a seductive scene (To Have and to Have not) any son or daughter would feel same way in such a situation.
Hence why Stephen mentioned he had very little memories of his father "father figure" than an actual father. He's not slender his father. it's just that he really didn't know his father, perhaps Stephen's sister feels the same way she was only 4 years old when her father passed away.
+sambking - I was just asking myself the same question. tyrone son is the same thing, Tyrone son spent half of the interview lecturing the report the pronunciation of this last name and where it came from than anything else. I believe that the problem with Hollywood children is that they have to spend the rest of their lives living under their parents shadow.
