Canoe camping in October has become something I look forward to all year. This trip did not disappoint. Craig ‪@MeetMeOutside‬ and I return to the Debsconeag lake wilderness area in Maine for 9 days of canoe camping fun! We planned for 11 days but the weather had other plans that didn't quite jive with ours. Just like the past 2 years, 9 days is what we got. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. The trip was epic! From sunshine to pounding rain, dead calm water to heavy wind and whitecaps, we saw it all.
I took a slightly different approach to filming and editing this video. A slightly more involved effort. Let me know what you think. Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoy this video.

I love the Maine woods in October. My old buddy and I would go camping the second week of October every year, just after he got back from his annual trip (since retiring) to a horse riding ranch in Wyoming. Great memories! He recently passed away at 94. Riding and camping ito his late 80's.

Working as a scientist in Alaska and living in remote field camps for months, we use Katadyn Be-free type gravity water filtration bags. Durable, lightweight, and no effort, gravity does it all. A bit pricey but you can process a huge amount of water in a short amount of time. Great show BTW. Like your extended multi-day expeditions, and shorter ones too. You're just chill and I like the no pressure trips. When expeditions have hard-and-fast schedules, it ruins the whole vibe.

Man, you and Craig have the whole nature video thing nailed. Great video, and I agree with Alan that I like the longer movie version. Glad you guys had a great time, and, btw, you're not fooling anyone - calling the trip a little "early" so you can score point with the wives. 😆 "Honey, I came home early because I couldn't stand to stay away from you another day!" Yeah, nobody's buying that. 🤣 Seriously, God bless your family for giving you the opportunity to get away, especially your daughter, packing you a Slim Jim. Love it. Joe

The lighting did seem rather epic on this one. Those fall colors were on point! I am really getting into the dehydrated meals! I have heard a lot of people say dehydrated food works, but it isn't tasty. They are doing something wrong because this stuff is delicious! Craig and I were both talking about how neither of us were suffering from hunger. The meals stay with you that is for sure. The unspoken spot......real nice!!! Have you been over to Lady Slipper Island? That side of the lake is real nice. Did some exploring to see if I could get into the Jo Marys from there, I figured we could wind our way up the river a bit to get into them....I was wrong lol. A boulder field of a mess. Man, there’s so much to like about this video 👍🏻 I really like that you give a nice balance of all the components of the trip. I subscribed to your channel the other day as I was watching Craig’s video of this trip and I’m glad I did because this is a great version/perspective of that trip. I personally prefer the longer “movie” versions of multi day trips. Some RU-vidrs release an episode a week or even a month and a lot gets lost in the gaps. I’ll be going back and watching your older videos until the next new one pops up lol

msr guardian pump. it was expensive but works fabulous . can pump 2 x 32oz water bottles in under 2min. and 4L bladder in about 3-4 minutes. its about the size of a 24oz water bottle , tubes roll up around it no problem. I just did this canoe loop about 2 weeks ago. it was very strenuous for me. I also brought WAAAAAy too much gear (which cancelled out my ultra lite boat-Lol) it was a learning experience for me. the portages were longer than I expected (lots of bugs) the camp site at moose island was taken (well , people left their campsite all set up-left all their gear, so I opted not to stay with their 6 tents all set up) I should have stayed the night at Namakanta stream site, but did the portage and White house landing to 3rd debs at 5pm. got to campsite at 3rd by 6;30, proceeded to dump my entire boat and self while negotiating the rocks and cliff-Lol . had a good night, saw biggest spider in my life next am. paddled 3rd debs to portage by 10am. should have stayed at waterfall campsite but I thought there were more sites down lake, and I did 2nd portage to 1st debs (in same day!!!) paddled all the way across 1st debs to 4 sandy beach sites. I stayed at 1st site all the way to the right on its own across the outlet from the other 3 sites. there was a party of 12 locals with dogs and motorboats at the large cove where you and Craig stayed. anyways after my whole camp was set up, fire wood prepped, I jumped in lake with some Dr.Bronner's , and while walking up beach I noticed Bear paw prints every where on the beach and all around fire pit and picnic area. I decided to ear MRE's for dinner and packed all food away in airtight bags and stored them in the "clean outhouse"! It has a latch on the door. my hammock and tarp were set up about 150 yards away in the pine grove to the left from beach area. Bears did come to site that night rough 3-4am. They do "hoot" at night as my brother from the Adirondacks had told me. heard one up the lake at about 3, then all around camp "hooting" till about 4am. any ways I survived, was on water by 5am to west branch , little portage was tough , unmarked no trail just bushwacking, then I made wrong turn at passamagamet falls (should have gone full to the left!) but portaged around small falls and put back in, but there was still more swift water, I took 2 large rocks across the bottom of my brand new hornbeck-ouch, but I didn't dump it, holy shit, I said some prayers!!! wish I took more time, was in and out in 3 days, also would rather go with a buddy or 2 next time just for safety sake. I'm 55 years old and not in the best of shape, but glad I did it and want to do more of it. sorry for the long windedness. I truly appreciate you and Craig and Maine Tripper, and I have A LOT more respect for all of you after having done it myself now (a comedy of errors) you guys make it look easy. The beauty of the wilderness leaves me fill with awe. also drank river and lake water for the first time and it tasted GREAT!!! Thanks again Justin, you are the MAN! -Andy

Sounds like you had an adventurous trip. I put a few scratches in mine in the approximate location you got yours. Lol. That is a tricky section to navigate. I have yet to visit the campsite on 3rd. Craig and I went back earlier this spring with intention to do so and fish 3rd for a couple days. But we never made it off of Pemadumcook. Rain had us pretty well pinned down. I am not surprised at the high traffic for your trip. I have suspected it is quite popular in the summer months. Regardless, it sounds like you had an adventure. Fresh lake or river water is a gift. It is so good. Solo trips are cool, they have their place. But good company is nice. I prefer to adventure with friends. I hope you have a chance to get back out there with some good company. Thanks for the long winded comment! I like comments with meaning. Keep on paddling!! Cheers Andy

Awesome video dude! I did that loop years ago with some friends and really enjoyed it. Your video brought me right back! We went early June and had high water of course. We all ran those falls without knowing how big they were. Probably class 4 easily. It was a huge yard sale. I was the only 1 of 5 that didn't tip. My yak was full to the brim with water and I barely made it to shore. Still the biggest rapids I've hit in a yak to date.

Great video. I really enjoyed it. Those views were amazing. Really liked that last campsite. A couple comments about the hammock, tarp and rain. If it's raining and the wind isn't going to be bad, have the tarp in porch mode. I have had great nights watching a lightning storm from the comfort of my hammock. Also you don't need to set the hammock up right away. Use the tarp as a shelter and hang out under the tarp with your buddy and then set up the hammock later that evening. (Before the spirits take affect.) Great forethought in using multiple rainbreaks along the suspension. Great looking food all around.... except for the biscuits from a can. 😉 (Just teasing.) However good biscuits are quick and easy to make. Get a can of Bakewell Cream from the cooking isle at the grocery store and use the recipe on the can. Keep the butter and milk cold and don't handle the dough too much. You don't want the butter to melt and the dough should be lumpy. About 5 min to mix up and about 15min to cook. You asked me to provide feedback on the style. I thought it was good. I was worried that you were going to keep the soft mellow voice from the intro throughout. I'm glad you didn't as although it was a nice opening, if you continued I probably would have been lulled to sleep. Keep up the great videos!
@ItsGoodintheWoods
@ItsGoodintheWoods Год назад
Hey Doc. I am a fan of porch mode as well. I have enjoyed many a storm that way....but not in a hammock set up. This was my first time. In this particular situation the forecast was nasty. I had never weathered a bad storm in a hammock and I was using a new tarp set up. This is my first tarp with doors. There are a lot more guy out points to mess with on a tarp with doors, plus the setting up of the doors as well compared to my flat tarps, when going from porch mode to "hunkered" down. Not being familiar with the gear, and thinking real nasty weather was on the way, I thought it best to just pitch it the way I did from the get go. All that said, I did find myself with some time and confidence in a break in weather to mess around with it. And I did, but saw no point in filming the learning curve. I did mess around with the configurations a lot though. On to the hammock Lol. I did think of taking it back down once it was set up, but....the tarp is 11' and the hammock is 11'. Everything needs to be just right for proper protection. I didn't want to be messing with it in rain, so I left it up. Plus it is real nice to sit in as I didn't bring a chair. I now see the value in using carabiners as they allow the hammock to be taken down and set up quickly and in the exact same configuration. Throughout the whole rain delay I hardly drank a drop of alcohol. I wanted to be of quick thinking, sound mind in the event of a gear failure. The weather was calling for 3'' of rain at one point with 30 mph winds, flood warnings, the works. Honestly, I felt like it never did get that bad. Should have been drinking. Either way, I was ready for an event. And the drip lines worked like a charm! The biscuits were quite tasty LOL. I have made biscuits on site in the past, I didn't feel like doing that out there and I knew it. Given the situation, I was happy to eat them. I am quite confident I will never take the soft voice intro past the intro 🤣 The intro was a struggle, there were so many ways I wanted to go with it and they were all too long. Either way, I am glad to hear I didn't put you to sleep 🤣 Thanks for all the feedback Doc! Much appreciated.

@@ItsGoodintheWoods There are about 20 campsites along the bow trip. The campfire rules are the same as in the Debsconeag area. Fires are only allowed in existing fire rings and you need a permit. Most people make it a 3-5 day trip. Millinocket can get pretty busy in the winter with snowmobiling and ice fishing. I try to avoid either of those activities on weekends and holidays because the lakes and trails can get more crowded than I like. Midweek is a lot quieter.

Great video. Some comments! Seems odd that Craig is left out of the video for much if the trip. More interaction would be nice. Hammocks are great. We did a very wet trip on Middle Saranac a couple years ago. .My old faithful 40 year old Eureka tent started seriously leaking. Rather than biyiy another good tent, I went to a hammock and never looked back. Do you ever rig a tight ridgeline andbout you tarp OVER it? One major advantage is that you get to hang all sorts of stuff underneath the tarp. Dry yoir clothes, keep various little bags handy... Water filtration. I use a Platypus 4L gravity system. Works great. Filters are expensive and you can't let them feeeze as that will ruin them. Thanks for the video. Look forward to more.
@ItsGoodintheWoods
@ItsGoodintheWoods 10 месяцев назад
Hammocks are amazing! It was on my first trip to the Debs wilderness area trip that my mattress developed a leak. That is when it occurred to me that underquilts don't pop. So I made the switch. I used to throw my tarp over the cordage. I don't like to do that anymore. I much prefer the ridge line over the tarp. Just works better for me. Platypus makes good stuff. But I am sticking with Sawyer for their contributions to humanitarian aid alone. They are doing great things. I'll continue to support that. Thanks for watching and commenting. I am glad to hear you enjoyed the video. I try to record as much as possible and document the trip accurately. But I don't like recording everything. Not sure if that makes much sense. I don't want to ruin the experience or interactions by always having a camera running. Especially in regard to someone else. Sometimes you just want to hang out without the cameras rolling. I don't want to constantly be recording someone elses experience, putting a camera in their face. I get what I get and try to make the best of it. It is a fine line. Craig is pretty good about it though.

Great video. We did this trip in september and got wind bound for the whole trip on Moose Island. We will be back. Thanks for showing some of the portaging. Helped a lot. We pretty much planned to do the trip you guys did last year.

@@ItsGoodintheWoods 3 Nights. we pretty much paddled to Moose Island in the rain on Thursday . Wet first night and by morning the wind came in and didn't subside until Sunday morning. It was a 4 day trip. White caps and nasty wind. Found a comfortable spot on the Lee side of the island. The island got smaller every day. lol. Lesson learned when checking weather also check wind forecast. It was our own fault. Good time anyway

This looks like an amazing trip....but it is almost a 24 hour drive from here in NE Alabama! I am watching, then pausing the video to comment about things as I see them, so I won't forget. LOL! I would love to try one of those lightweight packboats, but those things just would not survive a trip on the rivers that we have to run down here. Too many sharp limestone rocks. We have the Old Town Nexts that we use on trips like that. Most of the time, we are solo paddling our "big boats", 15-17 canoes. And we have them loaded up like the Clampetts with all of our creature comforts. LOL! Those boots look sweet for cold weather trips, but down here, they would just be needed about 2-3 months per year. After several years of hammock hanging, and watching several of my friends fall in their hammocks...I have learned that I like to hang low, because as much as I have made fun of them for falling, my day is coming. The lower it is, the less I have to fall! However, I do agree with all of your reasons for hanging higher. We also usually camp on sand/gravel bars, so we use homemade hammock stands that allow us to pop up a hammock anywhere. No searching for trees! On the 6th morning, you spoke about your weather app...did you have cell service? Or were you using a GPS, or something? I have the BeFree water filtration...I've used it several times over the past three years, and I keep waiting on that little flimsy bag to fail...but it hasn't yet. Awesome video...I've sort of been binge watching your stuff the past couple of days! Good stuff. Thanks for sharing!

I comment on videos the same way you do. Lol. These light weight canoes are awesome at what they are intended for. As you eluded, not so great on the rocky rivers. They are much stronger than one would initially think. They can take the abuse to a degree. But it is not what they are made for. I certainly wouldn't do it. These things are not cheap. Every scratch makes me cringe. lol. It's a terrible sound. I have other canoes for that sort of adventure. Just like any job, you need the right tools. I have yet to fall out of a hammock. And I have to say, if I ever see anyone fall out of one I am going to point my finger and laugh uncontrollably for a long time. We did have service at that sight. The weatherman failed us on this one. Oh well. Pretty common these days. That is exactly why I don't typically bail on trips that have a bad forecast. I have canceled too many trips in the past just to be at home regretting my decision. I have not tried the BeFree yet. I am sticking with Sawyer. I have had great luck with them AND they donate tens of millions of dollars towards humanitarian aid. They are very active in making sure they get clean drinkable water to people that don't have access to it. It is incredible what they do. I stand behind that! That is something I am proud to support. I am thrilled to hear you are enjoying the content. I really appreciate your support and thank you for letting me know. Plenty more to come! ....Thank you for the awesome comment

@@ItsGoodintheWoods I failed to mention that I also own a Sawyer... and they are an awesome company. You should check out our latest trip down one of our local rivers. Pretty boring, compared to Maine, but maybe you'll find something that you like. We certainly have fun. Just a group of good old boys from Southern Appalachia that enjoy our way too seldom canoe trips. Well...I do a little bit of everything; kayak, bike, hike, canoe, real camping, and even some glamping when my wife & I carry our homemade convertible teardrop camper out for trips. Go check it out. The coffee press is from JetBoil. It will work with any pot that has a 3 3/4" diameter opening. A 550ml, 650ml and 750ml pot from toaks will all work with it. And it works great!! My favorite way to make coffee on my adventures. I film my adventures with a combination of cameras. My primary camera, the one I use most is my Iphone. I also use a go pro and a small point and shoot for some zoom shots. Thank you very much for subscribing! I appreciate your support of the channel

@@crazyhorse1634 for years I used a 20,000 mAh solar power bank. It worked well. But it is big and heavy. I recently upgraded to a 28,000 mAh power bank. No solar capability. It is much lighter and smaller than the solar unit. This is the unit I now use on my longer trips. I also purchased a nitecore 10,000 mAh power bank for the short overnight/weekend trips.
