For this young family, life in a tiny house is largely centred around a desire to live with a lighter footprint and do something good for the environment.

Going zero waste and cutting out single use plastics has been helped by living in a tiny house, where the small home makes the family more aware of their consumption. Mark, a Vegan chef has also leveraged debt free living in a tiny house to start his own plant based pop-up restaurant.

If you live in US?other moderncountries too? the city or nearby smalltowns, there still MANY small REFURBISHABLE/REMODEL small 750-1200sqft, 1 story 1950-70's homes you can buy cheap foreclosures/empty & more $ you can literally be off grid put up panels & small windgenerators. Water collect from roof, compost, garden your yard, redo roof/walls for lighting/sun heating. Some places allow raise chickens/rabbits goats fenced like dogs. Early 90's b4 this was a 'fad-thing' I saw silliness ofowning huge house space and waste. Bought a house for less than paying apt rent and started using the savings (screw landlords and bankers) to be more environmentally sound as I kept up with the tech & movement. Instead I intend to be a little old lady in a self sustaining OWNED home in the city next to downtown.

Tiny Houses are working to change more than just the weather climate. It's changing the idea that "gotta-have-bigger/more/all" isn't the happiest way to live.

Small living should be about compromising space to save money and gain freedom ..these nutjobs buying a tiny house thats as expensive as a big house to say that you are living small for green-ness and others ?--blaaa..and living as small as that in a couple? I don't buy that its as great as they want to made it out. I could do it myself, happily.. but another person with me.. ehhh. romance will quickly die .. haha

I think that the "gotta have bigger/more" lifestyle soon proves to ALL the people that its a wrong way to live, but not all of those discover the better alternative. That is why we should teach by examle and show children that you can be in connection with nature and yourself, without the "rat race" part.

English Muffin Cloth nappies can easily go until baby is potty trained, but once baby is on solids, I imagine they will need a detergent to get rid of the smell. Also, my cloth nappies/ diapers would get a strong ammonia smell, we did use white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda and sunshine but sometimes they NEED a proper detergent.
@caledoniabeautifuleden8584
@caledoniabeautifuleden8584 5 лет назад
umma a Thankyou for replying, that is interesting, we would often have to strip our nappies but always had the same problem. The nappies I had were recommended to be washed at 60 degrees Celsius. My youngest is 9 now, I don’t need nappies for babies anymore, just reusable san pro for myself but this is good to know, if a friend has similar issues I can pass on your advice!
@lpm67

Sunshine and snow are fantastic for dealing with cloth nappies. Just scrape, soak and then cold wash with detergent....I liked grated sunlight soap, rinse well and hang out in the sun to dry.

Franktaku That is something I am interested in also. I realize that it differs tremendously from location to location, but even highlighting that would be so interesting! In this case, because this Tiny House is located on his parents property, which seems to be on the large side, I guess it is just like having another out building?
@johndeveney3878
@johndeveney3878 6 лет назад
Most of these homes are tagged as "RV's". You then fall under D.O.T. size and weight restrictions! (Tiny homes only save you from building codes). In the States, many tiny home owners are leasing land because it's illegal to riside in one. (camper, shed, bus) etc. The real issue is getting domiciled! Anybody can "build" an out building or throw a school bus on a plot of land... as long as you don't claim it as a residence. No thanks to the i.d. act post 911, it makes this lifestyle harder to obtain!

@stevedolesch9241

Tina, I agree. From seeing several videos of Tiny Houses, I see what may be called "Tiny Communities or Villages" spawning here and there. At present, technology is much more miniaturised than twenty years even less. Solar panels, compost toilets, accessible designs for people like me who use wheelchairs, etc. I admit having money to build (if one can't like me who needs helpers does help. "gotta-have-bigger/more/all" is so immature making us people who think about the environment/healthy living push even more to try to change the thinking patterns of others. But then, the best way to change is often if not always is by example. I live in the city (Gatineau, Québec across from Ottawa( where there is public/para transit. It's a challenge even to make municipal/provincial/federal governments commit to helping people to live healthy with ecological thinking. We need people like those who live in tiny houses to show others that it's realistic and very much possible to live healthy. It's now the time to make a tiny change that could be big benefit for all of humanity.

Steve Dolesch, thank you for the reminder to be more inclusive of differing abilities we all need to consider. And those may be our individual needs later! Easier to build a ramp at the beginning than to jackhammer out the concrete steps later. And how to work with beureaucratic blindness? So many frustrated comments on this site about old restrictions on land, construction and building practices that don't fit our new awareness, skills, and technologies.

I became debt free January 2017, and I must say I sleep better at night, and now I am looking to build my own home starting early 2019. Would love to go offgrid to reduce the bills and save a nest egg for the kids education and future. Waste reduction is a worthy goal I have on my agenda, but its a really hard concept to sell to the kids who are 17 and 12. Probably if they were born into the lifestyle it would come as a part of life.

You will get an ammonia build up if you don't wash the nappies properly. Sun bleaches the poop but does not remove the fecal matter and a hot wash is needed to properly remove the wee so ammonia doesnt build up and burn her bottom. These MCN are very different to the thin terry towelling cloth nappies of the past. Lots of absorbing layers so a good wash routine is essential.

Nothing new. My children wore cloth diapers and I used cloth wipes on them. Oh, there were disposable diapers but they were horrible! One thin layer of some sort of paper with a very thin plastic layer. I used the "gauze" diapers which, after the child no longer needed them, made great dust cloths. No, we didn't use disposable dust cloths either. In some ways, the recent trend to reusable items is easier for us old folks. We are still trying to reuse one-time plastic containers! Old habits die hard.

For laundry you can get enzyme based powders. They actually work really well, especially for athletic wear that gets stinky after a while. They probably also use things like vinegar, baking soda, cornmeal, citrus peels, and essential oils. Making your own green cleaning products is really cheap and effective. Personally, I still use soap to clean my body tho. :)

I love your show but sometimes it's hard to understand what some Aussies are saying at times. I think when I have the most trouble is when they're talking about the actual building materials and I think that has something to do with the names they use for them. I believe the materials may be the same thing as what we use here in the U.S. but they may have a different name? I'm not 100% sure but that's my theory. However, I wouldn't change a thing about your show, except maybe some subtitles thrown in when they're talking about building materials maybe for us who don't catch on so fast? Thanks for a lovely & inspiring show, I appreciate it very much!

CompuOtter that's not what I was saying, The new trend is to get everyone in to tiny spaces, and eventually off of the land. Sustainable development. My point is that people are entitled to space.
