There's also so many different kinds of asexually reproducing species, hermaphroditic species, species that can change their sex under certain conditions...
Wait I thought you can’t change your sex at all and this was about changing genders? I’m new to all this and trying to understand but the constant shift in verbiage is making this so confusing... can you change your sex or not? Is a “sex change” actually a “gender change”? @@OctyabrAprelya Ever since the English language originated, gender pronouns have been used exclusively to differentiate between biological sex for every living thing and never used to describe one’s subjective self-identity. Only recently have people decided to change the meaning of gender. The majority of people still use gender pronouns to differentiate between biological sex. This is why they’re often used regarding entities that have a biological sex, but don’t even have a gender identity. This includes wild animals, babies, pets, and ancient remains. Even scientific and academic groups still use gender pronouns way. I’m curious as to why your understanding of the word “gender” is more “correct” than the original one that’s been used for over a thousand years.
@@Ben-pp5tt _Ever since the English language originated, gender pronouns have been used exclusively to differentiate between biological sex_ Ehm... No. Old English had gramatical gender (where every noun is gendered, regardless of nature) the same way German still has it. _The majority of people still use gender pronouns to differentiate between biological sex_ That is, we used sex as a starting point to build the concept of gender. That's why it can vary across time and cultures. _This is why they’re often used regarding entities that have a biological sex, but don’t even have a gender identity_ Often, but not always. We assign gendered agency to "higher" animals where we can project our own into them. The rest of the time we refer to animals as "it". _I’m curious as to why your understanding of the word “gender” is more “correct” than the original one that’s been used for over a thousand years._ Because it did change, because it is not universal and more importantly, because we have a far better understanding of our own behaviour and culture.
@niall black As a Spanish speaker, I'm quite familiar with gramatical gender, not only nouns tho, but also adjectives. (Gata negra, gato blanco) Kinda proves my point of not being completely tied to sex though.
@niall black conservatives fight for policies that harm the working class, so it would be stupid to be a working class adult who is conservative. If you're very young, I apologize in advance if this makes you feel bad, but you are not just "different". You have a birth defect. There is absolutely nothing wrong with you... but like, there's definitely something wrong with you. Yaknaa mean? Like your case is not a rare data point on a continuous spectrum. It's an anomaly in an otherwise binary system. Speaking of binary, I studied electronics in college. Did you know that the 0s and 1s that make up computer code are electrical signals that are supposed to correspond with precise voltages like 0V and 5V. When you go and measure, they actually make a wavy pattern that is forced into a square shape as much as possible... but it's imperfect. What the computer interprets as a 0 digit is anything below a certain threshold, like 0.5V, and the 1 is anything over some other threshold, like 3.5V THAT is actually a spectrum, because it's based on the natural phenomenon of electricity, which is generated in sine waves of 60Hz (AC) at the power plant. We don't know of a way to generate DC current. In the case of biology, you got 99.9% of the population that actually fit the same exact 2 patterns, and not just artificially bunched together "for all intents and purposes".
@@pointlessmike Incorrect, this is a spectrum with binary peaks of likelyhood. It looks something like a hammock, a shame you can define an equal spectrum but not understand more hyperbolic one.

Daily reminder that sex is not binary, it's bimodal. Small but important distinction. Even straight cis women and straight cis men have a variety of different hormonal balances and presentations. It is a reality of our biology. Whether or not we should include mutation as part of our biological definitions (meaning spontaneous but common mutations or errors, not ones that can be passed down genetically) is a very complicated and complex argument that I'm sure even biologists argue about. However, biology (and science in general) is supposed to be descriptive and not prescriptive. We can't say it's not part of human biology because it happens. Whether or not you think it is supposed to be is more of a philosophical argument and depends on your worldview on whether or not you even entertain that question.

@@brockcharz2104 I don't think vaush ever said that intersex is it's own sex, just that people's bodies can present in between those two sexes. There are intersex people that are truly in between and don't have much desire to lean one way or the other. Would you expect them to go by he or she? The same can be extended to a person's sense of self. If we can have these variations in body presentation, why can't we have variations in how someone's gender identity presents itself?
once again, ben shabibo is wrong. edit: As a femboy, the line "If a boy is effeminate, he is a woman" is hilarious. Like, does Shabibo think thats actually how this works? Is that the impression he gets? If so, its clear that he had no chance to argue in the first place; He was lookin at entirely different fuckin timelines from ours
Indeed lol because not only is it incredibly difficult to describe and define what being a man or woman means in more than a physical way but in a more social way but to define a person as either is nearly impossible due to either the very broad or non existent standards by which they are defined so by his own logic his is effeminate because by someone's standard he is thus by his logic he's a woman. This is why I personally don't believe in gender as it is far too subjective and vague to really define well at least in my opinion.
Shapiro once released a video where he brought on Jordan Peterson to "debunk" gender ideology, not knowing that "gender ideology" isn't a thing, and that Jordan Peterson is well-known to be a quack, and for good reason.
@So tired of this. While you are correct I intentionally used amorphus in lieu of hermaphrodites' more uncomfortable historical backing. There's likely a better term than amorphous and one that's less problematic however I'm not a biologist.
@So tired of this. This has an extensive history so recommend looking at more sources. That said with the popularization of eugenics as well a push from classical liberals it became a scientific term. However this had the serious problem that it medicalized and dehumanized a lot of intersex and trans people. This came in form of talking points but also as a slur. In modern connotation it is largely used against intersex and non-binary people. Though it is not nearly the most popular talking point it is still used to harm intersex people especially. This has led a push to change the term in queer and scientific spaces to intersex. (this leads to the ever present debate on how you treat harmful history so take that for what you will) [My 2 cents on it is that it was a valubule term in pagan mythology but like many things got misappropriated and was used to hurt many people so we should recognize it for what it meant but we should change it for the better]
Ben's really stuck on hyper masculine images of men representing being a man and yet he falls a lot closer to what he'd consider a typical female body type
I heard the name John Money and SCREAMED. All John Money proved was that maybe circumcision is bad and lying to your kid about stuff for 20 years when they're having doubts is... probably also not good. If the doctors and parents had just told the kid "Yo, so when you were young, we kinda botched a "medical" procedure and now you have different genitals" I think the worst that would have happened was "Wow. Thanks for telling me, you guys are kind of garbage for doing an unnecessary procedure on me as a kid but this does explain some things. I'm angry at you but I understand." Instead what we got was "Wow, not only did you mess with my body without my consent but you lied to me about it for years even when I was having all this inner turmoil that could have been solved by you being honest with me. I don't want to live on this planet anymore." The fundamental problem with John Money was not "He transed a kid, hurr durr, transing a kid is evil and should never be done ever!" The fundamental problem is that Money used that poor boy as a GUINEA PIG and took advantage of his parents' desperation to have a "normal child" in order to gain their compliance in withholding relevant medical information from the child at his expense. If it proves ANYTHING it proves that what John Money did was bad. So let's not do what John Money did, hm? Let's not LIE TO CHILDREN about BOTCHED MEDICAL PROCEEDURES and then subject them to psychological experiments for their entire life. You think with how these guys are so against "transing kids" that they'd be against circumcision. But nah. Cutting off part of someone's genitals at birth for aesthetics/religion/"hygiene"? Fine, fine, totally fine, no problem there! Letting a teenager take puberty blockers so they have more time to decide if they REALLY REALLY want to be the other gender later in life? "THINK OF THE CHILDREN! WHY WOULD YOU HURT A CHILD LIKE THAT?! THAT'S BARBARIC!" I'm so sick of the John Money shit. Both sides can pull whatever they want out of the trash fire of his "experiments" to try to justify their side and it's equally garbage, so let's throw out the whole thing and just agree that John Money is a garbage excuse of a human being and we should collectively agree that if, god forbid, someone else botches a circumcision again, we DON'T then do what John Money did and ignore the child's wants, needs, and desires and raise them as a girl when they clearly don't want to be and subject them to other horrific and unnecessary experiments in the meantime. Agreed?
And these assholes think that Money was the only person who has ever done research in this subject, when he has been debunked by people who hold simmilar hipotesis to his
My favorite thing about Ben's take on trans issues is that he, and people that think like him, believe that being trans is just a choice you make that doctors and what not are like "oh totally! Come get your hormones! Free of charge for anyone who wants to permanently alter their bodies for no reason other than they feel like it even though they have no reason to!" Like, if they took but ONE second out of their mundane lives to look into it, they would see that, no, actually, they don't just prescribe hormones all willy nilly and it usually involves a process; evaluations, informed consent, therapy, money, trial and error, etc. It isn't just one and done and that's it. It takes AT LEAST a year, if not more, if you're a minor to begin the process, and if you're an adult, it takes a while for the effects of hormones to kick in, usually requiring you have lived at least part time as the gender you identify as or at least that you have a support system and aren't jumping the gun. I'm 28! I began my transition a few months ago. And even at 28, I had to be evaluated and sign a whole heap of informed consent papers and what not before starting hormones. And prior to that, I came out to most of my family and all of my friends and had been living socially as a woman for years. I didn't just wake up one day and decide I wanted to transition and then when I began my transition, they didn't just give me hormones because I wanted them. It also cost me money to begin the process. But it's easier to just say "transgenderism is a problem that's affecting our youth!!!111" instead of looking into the nuance and the ACTUAL process itself and what it entails.
The way i look at it to, is you dont go through all of that for lols, risking social stigma, workplace discrimination, family issues, you dont just wake up one morning and say "im going to risk my quality of life for funsies!" you have to be feeling something pretty strong to want that
As a 22 year old I'm still too young to make my own decisions on selective surgeries without my parents permission, but I am far too old to be on my parents health insurance.
and what's REALLY ironic.....Ben considers himself a LIBERTARIAN!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! He doesn't have a clue the definitions of the words that he uses.
To an alt-righter like benji words mean what is most expedient to them in any one arguement. It's actually pretty P O S T M O D E R N if you think about it.
@@stepanovtakiov9311 nobody believes “men are women”. Trans women aren’t men. Therefore we don’t believe “a man can be a woman”. Trans people exist. They are real. Get the fuck over it already.
@@stepanovtakiov9311 Ben Shapiro compared not being able to afford healthcare to not being able to afford furniture. Ben Shapiro said people should sell their flooded houses in response to climate change. Ben Shapiro constantly complains about taxes and big government spending but is in favor of us forking over millions to Israel. Also, he supports Israel killing Palestinians because Jewish good and Muslim bad. I could go on and on. Ben Shapiro is stupid because he is a conservative. Your ideology is nothing but the rejection of scientific facts and the desire to reverse civil rights. Plain and simple.
The "toe spectrum" idea actually undermines what Ben wants to do: he wants to consider people as fitting in boxes to be treated differently. In his mind, trans folks are not in box A or box B, so they're "wrong" or "abnormal" and must be disparaged as destroying an orderly system. But look at the toe spectrum again and think about it. Yes people can have multiple numbers of toes on their feet. HOWEVER, that particular spectrum (number of toes, metaphorically replacing sex) has or should have NO ROLE in determining how we treat individuals when it comes to a different characteristic (human-ness, replacing gender). In other words, just because you have one sexual classification or another, it doesn't necessarily dictate what gender you express yourself as, nor should it mean that people treat you as less human or a freak to be disenfranchised.
So true. Also in the pictures when he talks about men and women, he shows like gigachads and ballerinas, which proves your point. Ben's brain can't comprehend that people are all different and that he can't put them all in a couple of boxes and treat them the way he assumes is right. He has such a narrow point of view and wants to pack the world into this way of life and people who disagree should be considered broken and therefore be mistreated. You know, that religious love
